Assessment and Reporting

•The SATs test assess pupils understanding in English and maths on the curriculum which was introduced in 2014.

•The SATs test covers key objectives taught in Year 3, 4, 5 and 6.

•The new curriculum is more rigorous and sets high expectations which all schools have had to work hard to meet since the tests changed.

Scaled Scores•Test scores will be reported as ‘scaled scores’.

•What is meant by ‘scaled scores’?100 will always represent the ‘national standard’.

•Each pupil’s raw test score will therefore be converted into a score on the scale, either at, above or below 100.

•The scale will have a lower end point somewhere below 100 and an upper end point above 100.

Scaled Scores

•A child who achieves the ‘national standard’ (a score of 100 and above) will be judged to have demonstrated sufficient knowledge in the areas assessed by the tests. A score of 110 or above will be deemed ‘greater depth’. However, this will not be reported (except in writing).

• In July 2020, on publication of the test results, each pupil will receive:oA raw score (the actual score in the test).oA scaled score in maths, reading and SPaG.oConfirmation of whether or not they attained the national standard.

Writing • English writing For 2019 to 2020: teacher assessment frameworks have been introduced in English writing only , which include:

• A more flexible approach – teachers can now use their discretion to ensure that, on occasion, a particular weakness does not prevent an accurate judgement of a pupil’s attainment overall being made. The overall standard of attainment, set by the ‘pupil can’ statements, remains the same. • Revised ‘pupil can’ statements – a greater emphasis on composition, while statements relating to the more ‘technical’ aspects of English writing (grammar, punctuation and spelling) are less prescriptive. All changes are in line with the attainment targets for the key stage 2 programme of study.

Mathematics•Children will sit three tests: Paper 1, Paper 2 and Paper 3.

• Paper 1 is for ‘Arithmetic’ lasting for 30 minutes, covering calculation methods for all operations, including use of fractions, percentages and decimals.

•Questions gradually increase in difficulty. Not all children will be expected to access some of the more difficult questions later in the paper.

• Papers 2 and 3 cover ‘Problem Solving and Reasoning’, each lasting for 40 minutes.

• Pupils will still require calculation skills but will need to answer questions in context and decide what is required to find a solution.

How we are Helping Your Child

•Your child’s teachers will have been teaching them all they need to know to pass these tests since they began year 3.

•In addition, we have a clear intervention timetable which uses mock SATs data and KS1 test results, in conjunction with baseline tests. This includes intervention in arithmetic, maths reasoning, reading, writing and SPaG.

•Additional weekly after-school sessions will begin just before Easter.

How to Help Your Child• First and foremost, support and reassure your child that there is

nothing to worry about and they should always just try their best. Praise and encourage!

• Ensure your child has the best possible attendance at school.

• Support your child with any homework tasks.

• Use the revision guides (if you have purchased them) for a bit of extra practice, or the free resources on the school website.

• Reading, spelling and arithmetic (e.g. times tables) are always good to practice.

• Talk to your child about what they have learnt at school and what book(s) they are reading (the character, the plot, their opinion).

• Make sure your child has a good sleep and healthy breakfast.
