Key Questions

How is the earth structured?

What are the differences between the earths crust?

I am going to drill down through the earth to a depth of 6000 km.

On my journey to the centre:

What do you think I would find?

Does it have a proper name?

Do you think it is the same all the

way down or does it change?

What is it made of?

Is it hot or cold?

What is its texture?

The Structure of the Earth

The Earths Crust

Continental Crust is the material which makes up all the

world’s land masses. It is old, light and

permanent. It varies in depths up to 70km

thick under mountains.

Oceanic Crust is the heavy material found

under the earths oceans and seas. It is

younger as the material is constantly being destroyed and recreated. It varies in depths of 5 to 9km.

Thin layerThickness: 6 to 70km

Made of 2 types of solid rock

Thickness: 2,900km. Temperature between 1300oC &

5000oC. molten rock is very gooey like treacle

(The proper term is Viscous)

Depth of 6,500 kmMade up of iron and nickel. Solid due to the pressure

Temperatures up to 5500oC. Thickness 2700km wide

Molten iron and nickel Liquid

Depth of 5000km Thickness: 2000km

Temperatures 2,700oC. This layer gives the earth its magnetic

field.

Extension: Label Continental and Oceanic crust – write out the correct information for each

constantly destroyed and replaced.

This is the land itself. It is older and lighter and permanent.

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to answer the following questions

Key Questions

What are tectonic plates?

What tectonic plates make up the earths crust?

Homework 1

• Label the Earth’s Structure in detail

• Complete the plate tectonics jigsaw puzzle

• Label the different plate names

• For Thursday 18th January

Location, Location, Location

Where do volcanoes and earthquakes

occur?

Why do volcanoes and earthquakes

occur in these places?

Memory Map

Homework 2

• Finish Qu. 1-6

• Complete the convection currents worksheet Qu 1-2

• For Friday 26nd January

Convention Currents

Mantle

Crust

True or False

• Volcanoes and earthquakes occur along the west coast of North and South America

• Volcanoes and earthquakes are not found in Europe

• Some places have earthquakes and not volcanoes

• Australia does have volcanoes and earthquakes

• There is an Indian Ring of Fire

• The mantle is solid

• Conduction currents move the plates

• Volcanoes and earthquakes occur on plate boundaries

Memory Map

Why do some places have both volcanoes and earthquakes and others only have earthquakes?
