A Message From the Governor

Hello NebrIowa Key Clubbers!

Your service so far this year has been admirable! I wanted to take a moment to thank each and every one of you. As club members in this Nebraska-Iowa district, you have done much to better our communities. Together, you have raised money for Maternal Neonatal Tetanus, you have volunteered at soup kitchens, and you have been a smiling face for someone in need. "e work that you do is invaluable, and I want to encourage you to keep it up. Continue doing what you do best: serve. Know that the world is a better place for it!

"at being said, as we approach the holidays, we see more people in our communities coming face-to-face with their greatest needs. Keep the homeless shelters in your mind as you donate clothing this winter. Consider raising food for your local pantry. Again, all that you do helps.

If your club has been facing any adversity this year, if you have lost members, need help planning projects, or just haven’t had the zeal of years past, please take a moment to email me at [email protected] We are here to help you through your year in service, and would be willing to help in any way possible.

We would like to serve you as you serve the community!

Yours in Caring,Mary LaPorteDistrict GovernorNebraska Iowa DistrictKey Club International

As most of you already know, this year’s Governor Project is the Eliminate Project. The

eliminate project is helping to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus from third world countries. Recently we have gotten a new update on the eliminate project. Now instead of

every 9 minutes a baby dies it is every 11 minutes. That is a 15% drop and 9,000 fewer babies dying each year and 25 fewer a day from the 2013 year. Good job guys but we are not done so some fun ways to fundraise are spelling bees, family day BBQ’s, Movie nights and

an interactive murder mystery night (If you would like anymore ideas visit http://sites.kiwanis.org/Kiwanis/en/theELIMINATEproject/home.aspx) We have made great

progress for the eliminate project, however in order to truly eliminate we need all of you guys help.

Service Partners

Did you know 1 in 8 babies are born prematurely? More than half a million babies are born prematurely in the United States each year. birth is the #1 cause of death during the first month of life. Even babies born just a few weeks too soon can face serious health challenges and are at risk for lifelong disabilities, such as cerebral palsy, lung problems, and vision and hearing loss.

Key Club members can support the March of Dimes mission by educating peers on the importance of healthy lifestyles through the use of our teen2teen interactive program. You can also contact your local office to see what volunteer needs the local Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the hospital might have, such as making scrapbook pages or hosting a dinner for parents. Make it a priority to spread awareness by dedicating your Facebook statuses to facts about the March of Dimes & the serious problem of preterm birth; and you can tweet about it too!

This time of year it’s important to start marketing your club and to make sure people know who you are. Here are some tips to help make Key Club a household name and potentially increase membership of your club!

•Put Up Posters- The most cliché tip out there. Posters with details about your service projects and meetings posted around the school will help other students know what’s going on with your club.

•Tell everyone you can about Key Club. Word of mouth is one of the most powerful tools so utilize it! Simply mentioning Key Club in passing can go a long ways. On the other hand, you can also talk nonstop about Key Club until someone tells you to shut up! (Been there, done that!)

•Use the Key Club logo whenever you can. People seeing the logo will help make a brand for your club and will help people remember who you are.

•Wear Key Club gear whenever you can, as much as you can. By nature, people will be curious as to why you are so passionate about making keys. What a perfect opportunity to tell them what you actually do--serve!

•Host days where you challenge each member to tell two other people about Key Club. Shake it up and give each member a roll of Kiwanis stickers, and whenever they tell someone about Key Club, give them a sticker. With so many people wearing these stickers, no one will ever have to wonder what Key Club is again!

Area Rallies

This year's Lincoln Area Rally was very successful. Although it was the first year, we had an impressive turn out of 38 Key Club members from around the area. We started with fun ice breakers, pizza, pop, and getting to know one another. Key Club members were also introduced to the NE-IA District Board members. In addition, we did three fundraisers. Our first was packing bags full of school supplies to those who may not be able to afford them. Our second service project was decorating cards for soldiers in the Army. The goal of this project is to make sure soldiers have cards available that they can write to friends or family in. Our last, and messiest fundraiser was a pie in the face to raise money for Project Eliminate. Our NE-IA Secretary had the most money in her "choose me to pie in the face" jar and was not only pied once, but twice. It was a great afternoon and a great success.

The Des Moines Area Rally was held September 27 in Des Moines, IA. We started our day at Kiwanis Miracle League, where we buddied with youth players to assist them in their game. Three Areas were represented at the Des Moines Area, with a total of 25 Key Club members. We had a great time volunteering with members of our Kiwanis family. After waiting through the rain and playing some baseball we moved to the John and Mary Pappajohn Center where we had lunch and a few short meetings. It was a great experience for all and we hope to continue this tradition next year!

Laura, the district secretary, getting pied in the face by not one, but TWO Key Club members. Key Club members contributed over $30 to pie an officer in the face.
