WELCOME• Hello kindergarten teachers!

• Our goal in this course is to start familiarizing ourselves with the Daily 5.

• My hope is that you will be able to use part if not ALL of this information in your classroom.

Objectives for the Course• Demonstrate my knowledge of the five different

aspects/choices of the Daily 5 and why they are important.

• Demonstrate my knowledge of good fit books and why they are so important for students.

• Demonstrate my knowledge on stamina within the Daily 5 and how to build it in the classroom.

Once you have completed one unit, click the home button and click on the next unit. My suggestion is to go in order, but it is your choice.

5 Choices• 5 choices all work on different literacy skills

• Letting students chose what they are doing as long as they do all 5 gives students:• Felling of control• Responsibility• Accountability• Motivation

Read to self• Expectations of the students

• Students get to pick a spot around the room to read independently.

• Gives teacher the opportunity to conference with students about what they are reading OR do small reading groups.

Read to someone• Expectations of the students

• Students get to pick a spot around the room to take turns reading to a partner.

• Gives teacher the opportunity to do small reading groups OR see how students interact etc. with others.

Listen to reading• Expectations of the students

• Students listen to a tape or CD of a book while following along to the story.

• Gives teacher the opportunity to do small reading groups OR see how students are able to follow a story being read to them.

Word work• Expectations of the students

• Students work with different manipulatives to practice words, letters, etc.

• Gives teacher the opportunity to do small reading groups OR see how students are doing with letter, sight words, spelling, or whatever you are working on as a class.

Work on writing• Expectations of the students

• Students practice what they have already learned .

• Gives teacher the opportunity to do small reading groups OR see how students are doing with letter, sight words, spelling, or whatever you are working on as a class.

Discussion• From the 5 choices:

• What do you believe would be the easiest to teach? Why?

• What do you think would be the hardest to teach? Why?

• If you could only choose one, what would it be? Why?

Good fit books

Based off of reading level• Reading to learn

Based off of interests• Reading for fun

BOTH are equally important!

Students need to learn that books have different purposes and when it is appropriate for each purpose.

• Do you already teach about good fit books? How?
