Population
The total population of the Boroondara area is 160,000 people. In Kew alone 22,516 reside. 19,190
are Australian Citizens. Kew is home to many nationalities, however Australian residents far
outweigh any other nationality. Next is English, then people from China, from Malaysia, Italy and
then Greece.
Most people are employed on a full time basis and work as Professionals, Managers, Clerical and
Adminstration and Sales in a School education, Legal and Accounting and Hospital capacity.
HISTORY
Boroondara was made home by the Wurundjeri clan of the Woiwurrung people. In 1837 John
Gardiner and his family were first to settle here.
Robert Hoddle another early settler named it 'Parish of Boroondars' which means 'the ground is
thickly shaded', to reflect its leafy environment.
In 1854 the Boroondara District Road Board was formed and incorprated areas that were to become
Hawthorn, Kew and Camberwell. Hawthorn and Kew were created as separate municipalities and in
1860 the remaining areas of the Road Board bcame Boroondara Shire in 1871. This then became the
City of Camberwell.
With the amalgamation of the cities of Camberwell, Kew and Hawthorn in 1994 the City of
Boroondara was created.
