CLIENT DESIGN GOALS A modern transportation terminal with light, airy spaces that referenced both aviation-age and traditional southern buildings in the community.

ROLE IN PROJECT Project Manager for Design Development through Construction Documents. Construction started in 2012 completed in fall 2013.

PROJECT AWARD 2013 Commercial Service Project of the Year by the Georgia Airports Association.

PROJECT SUMMARY 9,250 square feet, single story, includes bays for three emergency response vehicles, six dormitories, day room, multi-function training room, watch room, offices and support.

CLIENT DESIGN GOALS A cost-efficient new building, on a constrained site, visually linked to the aircraft-wing forms of the existing terminal building.

PROJECT SUMMARY A greenfield international aerodrome / airport to serve growing air cargo and aircraft maintenance needs of the Sub-Saharan region.

Modified initial scope from nine to twelve buildings. Over 462,000 square feet in seven Phase I buildings, ranging from $2.5 to $54 million, totaling over $72 of $140 million construction budget. Construction started in 2006; first aircraft landed in 2009 once essential services were in place.

CLIENT DESIGN GOALS Provide modern, flexible, and durable passenger and cargo transportation facilities. Prioritize ease of expansion. Maximize local construction techniques. Establish design standards to guide development. Reduce long-term energy and maintenance needs.

ROLE IN PROJECT Program Manager for Phase I and II building design and Phase I tender documents. Interfaced with Owner’s Representative. Assisted Master Plan and Programming, led Schematic Design, developed Basis-of-Design manuals, collaborated with three architecture firms and multiple engineering firms for design and construction standards.

PROJECT SUMMARY 30,000 square foot addition and renovation as part of a multi-year, multi-project, phased Improvement Program of the existing terminal, to increase capacity and efficiency, and provide transition to tourist buses to nearby Branson-Missouri.

CLIENT DESIGN GOALS To re-utilize and connect existing buildings on-site while minimizing construction and maintenance costs in anticipation of future new terminal area development.

PROJECT SUMMARY 6,700 square feet, single story general aviation terminal, including facilities for private and charter passengers and flight crews, line crew service, conference and meeting facilities, and administrative offices.

CLIENT DESIGN GOALS Provide a higher level of service to their clients and to reinforce the impression of the City and Country for visitors. Materials and details referenced downtown historic City buildings recently restored and expanded into City-County conference center

PROJECT SUMMARY Enhanced terminal area master planning study with detailed inventory and analysis of existing conditions. Updated and reviewed historical demand, validated existing activity forecasts and prepared proposed adjustments, performed capacity analysis, board and stakeholder presentations, and developed alternative concepts for commercial passenger terminal building and landside parking areas.

CLIENT DESIGN GOALS To plan capital improvements to prepare for expected growth and potential service changes for introduction of low-cost carriers. Airport Commission has a long-range vision for the Port of Huntsville and wanted to prepare campus for rapid growth. Special focus to look at standard growth and sudden growth scenarios and prepare contingency plans.

ROLE IN PROJECT Assisted Airport Planner in forecasting, prepared demand capacity studies and alternative concepts, prepared and led presentations, coordinated with Owner and reviewing agency, revised final draft from comments.

PROJECT SUMMARY Gathering Together | Gathering In | Rising Up | Reaching Out

Approximately 22,500 SF enclosed conditioned space in program, plus exterior facilities including track and pool.

A series of pavilions where triathletes who commit two weeks to intense coaching and practice work with specialized trainers. Each pavilion focuses on a particular aspect of the endurance sport: swimming, biking, running, strength conditioning, stretching, fueling, and gathering.

As athletes and trainers start from different points and move through different paths in pursuit of the same goal, the site is organized along an indirect path that loops back on itself. Individual training focuses are gathering nodes along the pilgrim path.

CLIENT DESIGN GOALS To provide leading edge training facilities and an attractive early season practice destination to athletes who commit two weeks to training in the Sonoran desert retreat from the outside world in order to focus on their sport and gather around their common goals, efforts, successes, and celebrations.

STUDENT PROJECT Comprehensive building design with focus on sustainable practices.

PROJECT SUMMARY This jewel box is primarily for gathering together winter treasures. It is sized to hold existing, new, and future jewels for the next 100 years.

The Jewel Box Performance Hall started from the idea of precious experiences, spaces, and buildings to be maintained and built on for the future. For example, preserving the conversation gathering area and fire pit in the historic Julie Harris Theatre.

Facilities should continue the immersion in nature on which the camp was founded 100 years ago; in deep winter using views and connection to the outdoors.

Spaces are oriented both to be viewed and for views out and through adjacent spaces to natural beauty. Rooms and spaces are precious to different users for different reasons. Circulation areas surrounding and connecting these important activities can be precious and flexible for more than just moving from place to place.

Initial 10-year development program called for approximately 23,000 SF heated space.

CLIENT DESIGN GOALS Evolve the core creative practices program. Restore balance with the land on the 72 acre site. Clarify an honest vernacular for the next 100 years. Reconnect with the nearby city and the outside world.

PROJECT SUMMARY 100,000 square foot building features flexible and adaptable spaces for educational classrooms, workshops, laboratories, and offices. The building utilizes exterior support and minimizes fixed interiorstructure and separation.

Innovations in energy and building material include glass facade with dynamic screens and daylight from the north filtered through the translucent roof over the atrium.

CLIENT DESIGN GOALS An iconic, innovative and bold gathering point that promotes the University’s vision and creates a landmark destination to attract and retain education and industry partners. The Innovation Center is visible from downtown Chicago, the Metra Railway, the Dan Ryan Expressway, and State Street. Vistas from within the building are highlighted by clear exterior panels.

TEAM DESIGN GOALS Create a simple, elegant, comfortable, balanced, and musical lounge chair for the student lounge and dining areas. Selected as most comfortable by studio vote. Prototype remained in use for two years.

PROJECT SUMMARY Design a product with a definite need and consumer in mind, explore production and packaging, and build several prototypes and a finished model.

DESIGN GOALS For people who have a little trouble getting out of bed in the morning, this flexible bedside table remains flat even if bumped and keeps all breakables out of harm’s way.
