WATER ROADS FORM TERRACES SITEVEGATATIONE
This 200 bed rehabilitation hospital located in the Budong district of Shanghai is designed to maximize patient experience by giving each and every user of
this facility direct access to healing green space. From balconies for every patient room to outdoor therapy space to specially designed terraces, both
inpatients and outpatients get to experience the beauty of the outdoors while here. There are four large terraces for the inpatient floors. The top terrace
focuses on gardening and hands-on use. The next terrace focuses on neurological redevelopment. The small terrace squeezed between two parts of the building is for leisure. And the final terrace is for the VIP inpatient unit with
various walkways, a shallow wading pond, and plenty of seating. The overall form of the building is designed to maximize terrace use and pull green space
vertically so the building steps out of the ground naturally.

With 200 inpatient beds there are 6 modules with 15 semi-private rooms, and one VIP module with 20 private rooms. Most inpatient rooms in China still have 3 to 4 or more patients per room, but they are slowly designing hospitals with fewer patients per room, so the module for this hospital includes mostly semi-private rooms. Each room has its own private balcony with a view either towards the south and the canals or more towards the north and the courtyard. Although they are semi-private rooms, there is still family space for each patient and an offset of the headwalls to divide the room. The core of the modules contains the staff and treatment spaces.Each room has its own restroom with a roll-in shower. The headwalls are modular and inset into the walls. The balconies will each have one greenwall maintained by extra staff or patients if desired. There is also one pull-out sofa per room. (These four photos are precedent images.)

While at HOK, I spent a considerable amount of my time working on the fit out work for the Lauritzen Outpatient Center, a 170,000-square-foot building that will house outpatient clinics, an outpatient surgery center with 10 operating rooms, surgeon and faculty offices, telehealth offices and research space for the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery & Rehabilitation. From schematic design to design development, I did a large amount of the drawing in revit. From overall layout of the three outpatient floors down to the individual placement of each and every sharps disposal on enlarged elevations, I learned more about healthcare related design on this project than I have in any academic situation. The team at HOK happily answered any questions I had about medical planning, revit work, and any other aspect of the project. When we wrapped up design development and turned in the fit out package, I understood every aspect of the package and most of the planning that went into it.

st. louis, mo innovative concept academyAlso while at HOK I enjoyed working with the summer interns on a project HOK gave us to help one of the local public schools. We got to re-imagine the function of several different spaces of a city high school, which needs as much help as possible for as little a cost imaginable. We rebranded their main signage, redesigned the function of
their school store, came up with creative solutions for fixing space issues in their auditorium/gymnasium, and brainstormed about a few other areas. At the end of it, we handed them a booklet with our work and some key contacts to help their dreams of recreating these spaces become possible. It was a rewarding and eye opening experience to get to work with such hard working leaders at a city school trying to do it all with very few resources.

This project is a water museum located in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It is located above a water drainage bowl for city water overflow. My design includes filling the bowl permanently with water and building a museum that reflects the infrastructure of the water systems in Albuquerque. By using mostly concrete and glass, the building feels contemporary and structurally relevant for its use. Located in the program are galleries, an auditorium, a water related library, offices, a cafe, public restrooms, and a main entry. I divided these spaces into two main buildings that are built into the aquaduct-like structure of the building. There is a constant stream of water that is pumped from the bowl flowing down the ramps back down into the bowl. There is a large courtyard for public use and wading in the flow of water.

From beginning to end, the most important aspect of a designing a project in a town that was recently damaged by an uncontrollable natural disaster is rebuilding a sense of community. A city struggles with redefining what is important to them when they are forced to rebuild themselves. We want to refocus in a way that helps with their community spirit as well as helps them redevelop in a way that is more sustainable and economical in preparation for future unavoidable catastrophes.
We begin this by designing a building that houses many more people in a smaller amount of land than the typical single family houses. By concentrating the amount of people into one larger building, there is less construction that needs to be done to get them all back on their feet. And for future purposes, if this building is damaged, there are fewer materials involved to rebuild. Although this is the most basic part of the assigned project, it is important to focus on why this is necessary. Also, because this town is located in tornado alley, a large safe room will be incorporated into the project.

Early in the semester we built a Hybrid Model that was a combination between starting to design our building and an intriguing sculptural piece. We wanted a design that clearly defined the units of the building while leaving the more public space open to flexibility. Therefore, our residential units are clearly distinguished as individual stained wood blocks connected by all thread to define the circulation and the importance of the connections between these units. While we want them to be individualistic so that the residents dont feel lost in a large residential building, we want them to feel connected to their neighbors. This is also why we included transparent and translucent Plexiglas between the units. This further aids our desire to separate the units, yet keep the connections between them open.hybrid model
As we moved from our hybrid model to a more specific design of our building, we wanted to make sure these same qualities were expressed. Although we used a concrete podium as the structure for the first floor to hold up the second through fifth floors, which seems to be dense and inflexible, we applied a glass faade to the entire front of the building to reflect the openness of our hybrid model. The second through fifth floors of residential space, which are of wood frame construction, all cantilever over the first floor to again create the distinction between the well defined and distinguished residential space and the open and airy public amenities of the property. The walls between the units, also concrete to express rigidity, extend past the units themselves to reveal on the exterior of the building where each unit starts and stops. This will help to make each residential unit feel distinguished.

As a program requirement, we have a safe room, but we have also accounted for it to hold more people than just the residents of the building. We have a pathway through the courtyard to the safe room that directs the public, specifically anyone visiting the park across the street to have immediate access to the safe room.Altogether, we wanted to assure the residents of the building that this is the way of the future by providing a comfortable living space, access to many of their basic needs within the building, and a stronger than ever sense of community in a more economical and sustainable living space.

We also have a large, open courtyard that acts as a promenade for both the residents and the members of this community to come and gather, shop, or visit their favorite restaurant or caf. There is also access to a workout facility, which is flexible to being open to the courtyard or closed. There is also a public kitchen, which can be used by the residents for parties or for administration to bring in cooking demonstrations. These are a few of the amenities provided to the residents as well as potentially for the community.

The second through fifth floors of the building have the same general layout. The only changes are small undulations of the exterior walls to add variety to the overall appearance to the building and to allow for some units to have balconies. The extension of the demising walls helps to add privacy between the units. The double loaded corridor allows for every unit to have long exterior walls with windows to bring in plenty of natural light. There is also a large open space at the west side of each floor that can be used for events or gatherings.

dirt works design-build studio KU field station gatewayThe Dirt Works Studio was invited by the University of Kansas Field Station to design and build a new entrance gateway to their Research and Operations offices and the Armitage Education Center. The site is located in northern Lawrence, Kansas. A thirty-five foot long rammed earth wall rises from the earth, as the sites surrounding trees rise up from the prairie landscape. The gateway will serve as a threshold between the surrounding landscape and the Field Station, offering signage and direction to those visiting the site, as well as paying homage to the prairie environment surrounding it. - http://www.dirtworksstudio.ku.edu/
We wanted a threshold that emerged from the prairie grass in a way that represents this sector of KU. Every aspect of the gateway is tied to back to nature - in the way it rises from the ground, its materials, and its location.
Although everyone in studio helped with designing and building this entrance, we also all had specific roles to make the whole project come together smoothly. I was the Acquisition Manager, so I was in charge of the budget, contacting vendors, purchasing and acquiring all of the materials needed, and making connections for possible donations of materials for this non-profit project.

We started the semester by first building a rammed earth bench for practicing the ramming process. The bench was later installed on another Dirt Works Studios site.
Strong formwork for the rammed earth was one of keys to the success of our wall. We practiced building the formwork and testing its strength several times before actually starting our wall.

la barceloneta arts marketThe Arts Market is designed for a site along the sea in the Barceloneta neighborhood of Barcelona. Incorporating views from the neighborhood towards the sea, this market is designed to bring locals and tourists throughout the entire site without disrupting the natural pathways of the neighbors of this site. This is achieved by stringing the narrow streets of this neighborhood all the way across the site with ramps while providing diagonal views directed towards the sea. The roofs are cut diagonally to improve this draw towards the sea, while at the same time leading visitors through the mesh of platforms and ramps created to divide up the program space of all different aspects of art - fine art, music, theater, culinary art, etc. This creates a woven fabric of interaction and intrigue.

marfa, tx culinary arts schoolIn the small town of Marfa, Texas, a culinary arts school would fit in well with the existent art community of the area. Donald Judd has many installations of his work throughout Marfa, including at the Judd Foundation building across the street from the site. I drew inspiration from Judds boxes, which are large concrete boxes that are laid out in small groups stretched out over about a half a mile. Judds boxes are incorporated into my design by creating similar forms that are rectilinear and sleek. I created a design that would inspire the students while encouraging cleanliness and organization in their craft.

university of kansas pioneer chapelThe Pioneer Chapel is a small 900 sq. ft. structure for religious or secular use for the University of Kansas on West Campus. It blends the organic shape of shells with the traditional Gothic arch. With a north orientation, it lets in light without direct glare for the visitors inside. It encourages a connection to the outside world by drawing the viewer towards the front of the chapel, which is a full window facade. The entrance to the chapel, which is through a vestibule on the south side, is much darker with less light being let in, directing people towards the front chapel area. early sketch and process work

awhite-wash kitchen: as I helped build, paint, and install all of the cabinets for this kitchen, I gained a better understanding of the finer details of design.
boutdoor living space: from digging and pouring the footings for this deck to framing the roof structure, to installing the lattice work, I learned vital information about code, permits, and the entire construction process.
cstrie finishes: along with helping renovate this kitchen, I developed a unique strieing process and mix of paint finishes to create a fine cross-hatched pattern that was contemporary yet warm for these cabinets as desired by the client.
