As a designer and songwriter, I have always been enamored with the lines that connect my two life passions;; architecture and music. As a composer of both musi-cal and physical form, I consider the organization of space and time as an event.

Arranged above are examples of free hand sketches of various forms and structures that I have been able to draw inspiration from. The free-hand sketches consist of a variety of mediums and shading techniques.

Senior Architecture Studio, Fall 2010 The primary concept of the design was to organize movement of space along the cardinal directions through the presence of distinct planes. The development of the massive clamps were a culmination of the horizontal and vertical planes that serve as the harmony that supports the structure’s program and melody.

Urban Design Option Studio, Spring 2011

Behind the picturesque streets of Downtown Boone, NC lies a void that is in most senses uninhabitable. The project’s mission was to stitch the urban

fabric of downtown Boone. The project was originally inspired by the simple rhythms of the rational architectural movement of Northern Italy during the in-

dustrial revolution. The concept was to create an effective way to utilize the downtown margins to bridge the urban rhythms both physically and socially.

Mid Polis: Architecture in the Fourth Dimension Student Competition, Summer 2011

During the summer break, two former classmates and myself collaborated to develop and submit an urban planning + design proposal.

The proposal’s mission was to effectively define and renew the urban fabric of Somerville, MA, a depressed suburb of Boston.

Reuse starts with ideas that embrace support and connect. The main objective of the proposal was to connect to a grid that could bend, break, or contract for future needs. Maturing in a built environment is versatile beyond additions. The method was to allow multi-use areas to crosspollinate with slips of programming and pathways on a human scale, giving in to avenues not always known to vehicular paths.

thick [ thinsite analysis subtractive form sketchSenior Architecture Studio, Fall 2010The mission of the project was to create a structure that would exist as a place of escape for a local musician and astronomer. The challenge required a space that would have a clear shot of the stars over the Blue Ridge Mountains, a sheltered place to write in addition to a separate space to play music. The concept of subtractive forms inspired the initial idea for the design. Taking the original form and subtracting from its solids creates voids. The voids created defined the building’s program.

BIKE BOX // ReSpace Competition 2012. Team: Kevin Diamond + Zach HoffmanTransportation is a shift. Constructed entirely from recycled materials, bikebox is a transportable shop. An eight foot cube that redefines conservation of space while func-tioning as a full service shop when expanded. Tripartite division of space: Space for purchasing. Space for Repair. Space for recycling. Whether it is at the local bike race, community events, or a more permanent home, it is a only a short pack job from moving to the next stop. bikebox shifts to the site. Shifts for the cycle. Cycles its materials. Cycles through. Through awareness you can cycle a shift. Shift the cycle.

Transpo[se]rt - to transfer the order or place of. The initial concept was to capture the physical form of transposing chords used in everyday musical practice. In both the physical and musical sense, transporting takes a given form and moves it to a new point in space. Through a series of tense cables, the funicular struc-ture is anchored into the earth by massive structural pins that keep the structure in a constant state of compression. The rail terminal is suspended from the canopy and accessed from the ground via scissor stairs that do not transfer any structural load.

place holderThe Stretto House, designed by architect Steven Holl is located just outside of Dallas, Texas on a site with a pond consisting of three dams. The site’s constant sound of over-

lapping water inspired Holl to explore the musical concept of stretto. Holl specifically studied Bela Bartok’s Music for Strings, Percussion, and Celeste for its extensive use of

the stretto and its distinct division between heavy percussion, and light strings. Similar to the score of Music for Strings, the building’s structure has four sections, each made

up of two conditions;; light curvilinear metal and heavy orthogonal masonry.

Stretto - [expression in music theory] is typically employed near the end of a fugue, where, by increasing the textural intensity of what is other-wise already a texturally intense style of writing [i.e., fugue], the 'piling-up' of two or more temporally off-set statements of the subject [i.e.,stretto] signals the arrival of the fugue's conclusion in a climactic fashion. In other words, an overlap, the battle of the rise and the fall, the introduction of the introduced, dominos falling - shear forces.

-Elizabeth Marten, Pamphlet Architecture 16

“Architecture is the artistic organization of space as music is the artistic organization of time. Nature continually manifests time in space, it is LIFE. Without the concept of time and space, matter would be inconceivable.”
