kevin clarridge design

2Hello! My name is Kevin Clarridge and, when Im not sketching, I find myself thinking about how technology will change our society in the future. I strive to learn about everything, from a microscopic to macroscopic perspective, and enjoy learning about all aspects of life and design. I challenge myself to work harder everyday, and hope to better society through technology, design, and thinking in my lifetime.

2

This is a collection of my personal work, but I have had the opportunity to work with these clients and more!

3

Design Direction

To design a running shoe for the emotionally driven consumer who does not want their shoe to do all the work for them, but also does not want to risk the possibility of injury or discomfort from running barefoot. This target consumer wants to feel the ground under their feet and the wind rushing over their skin. The shoe they use to run must be an extension of their own body and not a clunky tech shoe that dilutes the experience.

Nike Jellies:Running shoe design

Nike running shoes combine a highly flexible, low-profile outsole for natural movement and the cushioning, traction and lightweight support of a traditional running shoe.

What is next in the evolution of the running

4

5

Thumbnail Ideation

6

Selected overall appearance; the layering creates visual forward motion, and the flywire runs out from under the translucent layer much like the inspiring jellyfish. The seperation between the translucent pieces near the toe allow a wide range of flexibility.

6

Flywire technology wraps around the shoe and up over the toes to allow a lightweight yet supportive fit.

Light breathable material creates the base layer of the shoe, creating an overall airy and light feel to the design.

Organic waves in the outsole offer a light shock absorption to every step.

Translucent layering on the top wraps around the heel and the base of the toes.

7

Flat magnetic sides for cable management

Design challenge: To design the next generation of Beats headphones

Physical pull to activate external speaker to share music

8

The original design did not meet the Beats design language, so the design was refocused.

9

Television redesign

10

Current 3D Technology

Proposed Technology allows multiple users to view seperate content on the same screen

Scan your ears using smartphone device

3D print your personalized earpieces

left eye right eye

Current 3D Technology

Proposed Technology allows multiple users to view seperate content on the same screen

3D print your personalized earpieces

left eye right eye

Design challenge: To design the next generation of television

When turned on, the television slowly rises using electromagneticism. This also allows the televisions power to be transferred to the screen without cables. Your customized earpieces allow the television to locate you and direct your content, and allows you to hear the accompaning audio.

11

12

Design challenge: To design a line of bags for the Travelon brand

13

Millennials are the largest generation group on the planet,

and have the ability to affect the world moreso than ever as

they enter the workforce.

Kevin Clarridge Thesis 2012

Connecting with others.

Helping the world.

Staying informed.

Being fashionable.

Progressing mankind.

Typical millennial concerns

Kevin Clarridge Thesis 2012

Electronics.

Fashion.

Eco friendly.

Cell phones, watches, mp3 players, eReaders, tablets...

Hats, bags, glasses, belts, shoes, tie clips, watches, jackets...

What products can progress mankind?

Translation to product development

Kevin Clarridge Thesis 2012 14

Design challenge: To design a watch to change the world

Senior Thesis 2012: Smart Watch Design

15

Sketch Development

Gorilla glass

OLED

Lithium-ion battery

Power button

Micro USB input

Chipset

Magnetic connector

Silicone band

Injection molded poly-propolene body

hours minutes about 3:37

12

3 ... 6 9:15

:30

:45

1 12

How to tell the time?

Standard USB Charging

Parts Breakdown

16

At random times, the watch face will have shut itself off, in the hope of reminding the owner to appreciate life and reflect on its greater purpose. A simple touch returns the watchs functions.

I give you the mausoleum of all hope and desire... I give it to you not that you may remember time, but that you might forget it now and then for a moment and not spend all of your breath trying to conquer it.

William Faulkner, The Sound and the Fury

Quote that inspired the project:

17

Less here... more here.

gps chip

Integrated GPS allows the watch to calculate the users home and work location, and adjusts to create more reflection moments in stressful environments.

Lithium-ion1600 mAh

3.7 V

VLN-057

CAUTION: USE SPECIFIED CHARGER ONLY. The goal is to fill the screen, therefore performing 10 good deeds a day.

Galaxy:The user can interact with a simulated galaxy, reflecting on the greater scale of the universe.

The user can swipe up, down, left, or right to interact with additional panels.

Picturegallery

DailyQuote

Panels setup

The watch panels can be customized through any computer. Panels that are available can be browsed online and downloaded onto the watch. The possiblilities are endless.

Drag panels into preferred position.

Browse panels

Description of panel.

18

19

Dumb Watch Design

Eco-friendly

Bamboo face, hemp band

Alluminum face, nylon band

Tech

Leather face and band

Natural

Steel face, leather band

Premium

In a market flooded with smart watches, this watch design features a simple physical display. Without a glass face to scratch, and low profile hands, these watches can face the test of time.

(pun intended)

Design challenge: To design a line of watches that opposes the smart watch movement

20

21

Lately, Ive been working to improve my sketching, modeling, and design skills in my free time through automotive concepts! I feel like cars are some of the most exciting and intricate blends of form and function in design, and they present a never ending design challenge for me!

Thank you!
