KETTERING UNIVERSITY FORMULA SAE

Technical Tidbits

This year has seen a newdirection with the formulaSAE team. We have made

some major changes in ourequipment which we feelwill be a great benefit. In-stead of running the MoTecengine management systemthis year we opted for anECU from PerformanceElectronics. This has al-

lowed us the ability to inves-tigate pushbutton electronicshifters to improve the ergo-nomics and drivability ofthe car. Other majorchanges include a completechassis and suspension re-design. The chassis is amild steel and chrom-molysteel space frame with adetachable rear end. The

suspension redesign allowedus to better package the rearbox and place the rockerarm and shock mountingpoints in a better structuralposition. The engine is

I

now a fully stressed mem-ber of the chassis, furtherimproving torsional rigid-ity. The suspension redes-ign has also increased theusable shock travel which

will give us increased per-formance and tune-ability.Another major suspension

change it;volved switchingto titanium for use in all

major suspension compo-nents, decreasing the over-all unsprung mass by 20lbs. We feel very confidentthat these new designs willlead us to another hallmark

year.
