Gala Concert July 31, 2013

Dear readers,

The Keshet Eilon Music Center, marking its 23rd year this summer, has acquired a status that has made it one of the major violin and string masterclass venues internationally, attracting outstanding young musicians from Israel and world wide. Keshet Eilon is a unique blend of distinguished teachers from all parts of the world, outstanding students of the highest musical caliber, and appreciative music-loving audiences. Graduates of Keshet Eilon perform at benefit concerts throughout the world, thereby gaining international exposure while helping support the Music Center and enhancing its stature. They also serve as goodwill ambassadors for Israel, conveying a message of dialogue and peace through music.

The Keshet Eilon Music Center operates the following programs:

The International Violin and String Mastercourse, a three-week program for violin and string students from Israel and the rest of the world, offering personal instruction by distinguished teachers, masterclasses, innovative workshops, opportunities to perform as soloists in nightly concerts at the Keshet Eilon Concert Hall, and a unique archery sports program.

Seminars for Israeli Violin Students and their Teachers, aimed at encouraging violin playing in Israel, held twice annually, led by senior Keshet Eilon faculty.

Annual Concert series – “The Sounds of Keshet Eilon,” mounted in the Keshet Eilon Concert Hall, featuring world-class music for the music-loving public in the Western Galilee and beyond.

The Violin- and Bow-making Atelier, open to participants in all Keshet Eilon programs, providing instruction, maintenance and repair of their instruments.

Keshet Eilon collaborates with music bodies in Israel:

Activities and support for the Al-Kendi Music Center in the village of Jatt by providing professional guidance, the loan of violins to students, contribution of music notes from the Keshet Eilon library, and referring interested donors there.

Collaboration with the Matteh Asher Regional Conservatory in the Western Galilee, reflecting a mutual desire to develop excellence in music education in the region. A joint program in string studies was introduced in the 2012-13 school year, with all string activities conducted on Keshet Eilon’s premises. The intention is to broaden this collaboration and extend it to other departments of the conservatory.

We commemorate three deceased leaders of the Keshet Eilon Organization who played key roles in the establishment and growth of Keshet Eilon over the years:

Meir Bar-Uryan, chair of the Keshet Eilon Organization, 1996-2011Born in Vienna in 1929, Meir graduated from the Ben-Shemen Agricultural High School, served in the Palmach, and fought in Israel’s War of Independence. Thereafter he joined the Mossad, holding a series of senior positions in Israel and abroad, retiring after 36 years of service. He was a member of various boards of directors and public committees. From 1996 to 2011 he served as chairman of the board of the Keshet Eilon Music Center organization and was an unwavering believer in the vision of establishing a major international music center for violin and strings at Keshet Eilon. Bringing his wide experience and contacts to bear on the formation of a well-run, effective non-profit support organization, he expanded Keshet Eilon’s circle of active supporters significantly. His contributions to the project and his devotion to it continued even after he ended his formal leadership role. The Keshet Eilon Board has approved the initiative of the Bar-Uryan family to name the Keshet Eilon Concert Hall the Bar-Uryan Hall in memory of Meir Bar-Uryan, its first chairman of the Board. A ceremony marking the naming of the hall took place at the Friends of Keshet Eilon program, July 26, 2013.

Abraham Slivka, a founder of the Friends of Keshet Eilon organization in the USA and its president during 2005-2010Abe and his wife Harriet, American Jews and warm Zionists, met the Sheba family through a mutual friend. Visiting Israel for the first time in the latter 1980s, they were guests at Eilon. Thereafter, the friendship between the families blossomed, deepening to the level of familial closeness. Toward the end of Dov Sheba’s life, Abe and Dov made a gentleman’s agreement that after Dov’s passing, Abe would assist Keshet Eilon in all matters pertaining to the management of the Keshet Eilon foundation that had been established in New York for donor tax exemption, and, moreover, that Abe would donate to Keshet Eilon annually for as long as he lived. And so it was. Abe, founder of New York Electronics, a family company which he led with skill, eventually turned over the management of it to his son Sandy, and, in 2010, the administration of Keshet Eilon’s financial affairs in New York to his son Mark. Today, Mark manages the affairs of the Friends of Keshet Eilon in New York with commendable professionalism. Abe was a warm and generous person, concerned for the future of Israel and a believer in co-existence. He was a devoted family man and had a wonderful life with Harriet, who accompanies Keshet Eilon with modesty and wisdom to this day.

Michael Kahanov, a leading member of the Keshet Eilon Organization since 2004Michael Kahanov joined the Keshet Eilon Organization in 2004, serving for many years on the Executive Board and on the Finance Committee. Side by side with his love for music, he was vigilant in assuring that the organization’s activity be carried out in an orderly way and in accord with every legal requirement. Michael guided us wisely and with remarkable modesty. We will miss his devotion and his experience, which contributed importantly to the development of Keshet Eilon.

Keshet Eilon joins the Rich family and the management of the Marc Rich Foundation for Education, Culture and Welfare in mourning the passing of Marc Rich (1934-2013), a loyal and devoted supporter of Keshet Eilon since 2006.

We are deeply grateful to all the hosts and organizers of benefit concerts

and events for their devotion and perseverance, and to all the Keshet Eilon

alumni and faculty who performed at these events on a volunteer basis!

We take pleasure in presenting the fruits of the work of our string students and the senior faculty this evening, ten days into the present Mastercourse.

This summer, 55 talented young violinists and other string players, selected by rigorous audition from hundreds of applicants, arrived at the Keshet Eilon Mastercourse, hailing from 22 countries, including 12 from Israel. Working together in chamber ensembles, they are eager to polish their performance skills under the leadership of a faculty of 16 distinguished teachers and artists from Israel and abroad, together with 8 experienced pianists who assist them.

Besides private lessons, masterclasses, intensive practice and rehearsals, and the opportunity to appear onstage, the Mastercourse participants are offered extra-curricular enrichment that includes a tour of the Galilee, and Olympic archery instruction – a singularly valuable sport for string musicians, instructed by a team of experienced Israeli archers who also assist in the operation of the course.

The opening Mastercourse concert at Eilon was performed by our faculty, and immediately conquered the hearts of the audience, including the students, by their exciting, masterful presentation and stage presence, conveying a captivating sense of the string repertoire. The concert dovetailed with the opening of a regional festival this summer, titled “Galilee Melody,” aimed at attracting visitors from all parts of the country to the Galilee.

Tomorrow morning, after returning north, the Mastercourse participants will resume their challenging routine. At the end of the week the course will focus on the contribution of the legendary Russian-Jewish violinist Mischa Elman in a concert featuring his works and an exhibit that depicts his life work in the context of his period.

Before letting the music speak, we want to thank our supporters and friends, many of whom are with us here this evening. We are convinced that together we will continue to sustain our focus on excellence, along with the spirit of volunteerism and remarkable support shown by the large and growing Keshet Eilon family in the years to come.

We thank you all!

Keshet Eilon thanks the MARC RICH FOUNDATION for Education, Culture and Welfare (Lucerne, Switzerland) for its generous and loyal support over many years, in the hope that this tie will continue in the years to come.

In appreciation and gratitude to BANK HAPOALIM for your warm and devoted assistance over the years. With your help we have sustained and will continue to sustain Keshet Eilon’s work to nurture the next generation of violinists and string instrumentalists.

We salute the following donors for their steadfast support and confidence in helping build and develop Keshet Eilon in its early years by funding the construction of the concert hall and the artists villas (2001), the music library tower (2002), the plaza and landscaping project (2007), and the construction of the campus (2012-2013)

Building the Keshet Eilon campusThe vision becomes a reality

Additional information about donating bricks is available at theKeshet Eilon Office, Tel. 04-985 8191 and www.keshetei.org.il

After a lengthy period devoted to acquiring necessary construction permits, an agreement was signed in July 2012 with the Israel Lands Authority allocating 29 dunams (7 ¼ acres) for the construction of the new campus. Additionally, permits were received to build 8 student dormitory units (of a total of 15 units), planned by architect Tzadik Eliakim and a team of consultants in various areas.

We are pleased to announce that the initial earthwork has been completed, and the foundations for the student dormitories are being laid, as part of Stage 1 of our campus plan. Under the assumption that the construction of the first 8 dormitory units will be completed by the summer of 2014, we will inaugurate them in time for next summer’s Mastercourse, with the aim of completing the rest of the units and the cafeteria by the summer of 2015.

The start of construction was made possible by generous donations from Raya Strauss and Patrick Drahi, and by many of you, yet the road is still long. Members of the Keshet Eilon Organization, supporters and dear friends – you are invited to continue donating toward this shared effort, providing a brick (at $1,000), or several bricks, each according to his/her capacity, to allow us to keep on building until the project is concluded. This will enable you to play a vital role in realizing the vision of establishing an international music center at Keshet Eilon which will function every day of the year. Naturally, when the inauguration of the first buildings takes place, your name will appear in a place of honor.
