Simple & effective alternative to corneal transplant

Keratoconus causes the normally round-shaped cornea to become progressively thin and stretched to create a cone-like bulge that changes the refractive error and distorts vision.

Before the development of cross-linking and INTACS, keratoconus sufferers were looking at corneal transplant as the only way to prevent the progressive deterioration of their vision, but they can now transform their lives with these highly effective, safe and quick procedures.

Corneal collagen cross-linking aims to strengthen the thinning cornea and halt progression of the disease. This treatment can be combined with INTACS (stromal inserts) to further flatten the corneal curvature.

In certain cases, this may be followed up with surgery for implantable contact lenses (ICLs), should the refractive error remain high or complex.

The Cross-Linking ProcedureCollagen cross-linking is a non-surgical

procedure which uses a UVA light system to activate riboflavin drops that strengthen the cornea. After placing the drops on the cornea the eye is exposed to UVA light for 30 minutes.

This enhances the bonds between the collagen fibrils to stiffen and strengthen the cornea.Following treatment a contact lens is inserted for 4-5 days to allow the eye to heal. Only one eye is treated at a time due to the intense nature of the treatment and the variation in healing time.

Non-surgical, safe and simpleThe procedure is extremely safe and

straightforward and only needs to be carried out once to induce a permanent change. There are no incisions or stitches so recovery is swift. Contact lenses can still be used after treatment to correct any residual prescription.
