Symptoms of Malaria are the usually the same as for a common cold. It can manifest itself even up to a year later and therefore be on guard even well ahead of your return journey. Due to the severity of the condition, IMMEDIATE attention is necessary.Advance Malaria precautions and a basic supply of General Medication, Sea Sick tablets is advised. SHOPPINGKenya is a haven for souvenir shoppers. One can pick up an array of good Baskets, Crafts, Beadwork, Clothing, Kenyan Kikoi’s, Sarongs, Beach Ware, Batiks, Curios, hand-made Shoes, Wood and Soapstone carvings, Silks, Spices and local fabric’s at very reasonable prices on the Beach, on the Main Road and in the Village. Should you want to buy any gifts, it would help to know your family’s shoe and clothing sizes before leaving home. A vendor will call on you at Club 15 in the evenings, usually after 6pm to show you her wares and take orders if you do not feel like wandering around. Shops include: Harrods, Selfridges, Fortum and Mason, Marks & Spencer’s etc, directly on the beach front with the usual Kenyan hand made goods for purchase. Bartering with T-shirts, Sandals, Sunglasses, Watches etc is also possible with most vendors, and with a bit of negotiation, bargains can be had. For a more extensive collection of carvings you can visit the Carving Co-operative in Malindi by taxi for the widest range. Markets can be found on the Main Road, in Turtle Bay and in Watamu Village. Another large market is situated alongside of the Malindi Fishing Club, while at the same time lunch can be had at “The Old Man and the Sea” in Malindi during your day visit, should you wish to do so. It is situated on the opposite side of the road from the Malindi Fishing club. Haggling is a way of life with the vendors, and the tip here is to walk away when a stalemate is reached. You will always be re-approached with “how much are you prepared to pay?” and will normally get your price.
