Inthe meantimeI wanted to let you know that the Kentucky Cancer Consortium had set aside $400 tohelp with ThreeRivers Air Quality Testing. Since that money was not usedfor AQ,it would beavailable for public opinion polling. Youcould also usea portion of Owen's subaward money for Owen County's poll. Additionally perhaps funding might besought from the FHKY grant referencedbelow, as they give a specific example related to polling! 1 As we discussed briefly at the conference I'm hoping that professional polling would allow the tobacco coordinators to use their time to do the necessary education andoutreach related specifically to SHSand smoke-free. This work takes time andwouldbe absolutely essential in getting the support policymakers need to pass good SFpolicy. For the Rural,Health, and Safety Education grant, our plan was to conduct focus groups (with an educational component) in rural counties (three with laws; three without) to develop messaging onsecondhand smoke andsmoke-free policy. It will beanexpansion of the work Caroliscurrently doing in Nelson andFranklin. That is the one Janelle ishelping with. Challenged by low levels of employment and education, geographic barriers and isolation, lack of quality health 1 education and health-promoting activities, and accessible health care services, rural reisdents are more likely than nonrural residents to report a fair to poor health status and have higher rates of health complications, morbidity and mortality. Negative health behaviors and familial, social and environmental risk factorsexperienced by children and adults alike underlie such chronic health conditions as obesity, diabetes and heart disease. In addition, the opportunity toreceive health infonnation or engage in health promotion activities islimited and, when available, may not be appropriate for the diverse populations living in rural areas. HiGuys, It was great to see you allyesterday.I hope the information that we shared was helpful. The survey results are awesome.Hopefully this willshow the fiscalcourt that even when youuse unscientific methods,Ohio county residents still want smoke-free.Since I know the results,I am going to tweak the LTE a bit and get it to you ASAP so whoever wants to submit it can tailor. I had the chance to talk withEllen about what's going on inOhio county and withthe committee looking at different ordinances and the talk of another forum,it is important that the coalition continue to look for a member of the fiscalcourt that couldbe your champion.I know you guys have been working to get meetings scheduled with fiscal court members and the CJE.Shannon,it is great that you arecontinuing to contact CJE andtalk tohim about exemptions.Since he says that he doesn't want exemptions maybe that wouldbe a good spring board to let himknow the coalition wants the same thing andsee if he would be willingtowork withOC Smoke-free to make that happen. If there is anything else I canprovide you to help aid your talks withhim, please let me know. 1 To answers Becky's question about drafting the ordinance,it wouldbebest if the ordinance was drafted by an attorney.Does anyone onthe coalition know an attorney that wouldbe willing totailor the model ordinance for Ohio county?Nelson county had a coalitionmember who wasa lawyer and she made the first draft of the ordinance.A attorney wouldbebest since ordinance aresuppose to be drafted by attorneys but if youcannot findsomeone todo it thensomeone onthe coalition could. The committee mtg is on the14th and that's when Marianne returns from her trip. Thus, I would try to get with her and ya 11schedule a mtg with him for sometime after that, as it may be a good time to also talk about the committee's findings, intent, and goals for and after the forum. The impression I got was that they arent planning to have a forum for the day the committee meets (June 14th), they are going to discuss survey resulls and thier next steps, which includes planning the public forum. So I'm guessing the forum will be sometime end of June/beginning of July- sometime this summer for sure. We can activate onr action alerts toattend forum once we know more about when/where the forum will be. And yes, there does seem to be lots of keeping it off the table talk going on ...awwwpolitics. Glad to hear at least one of them registered for the Summit, although it's dissappointing because I think most of them should be planning to attend. OK,so we now know his perspective on when the right time shouldbehaschanged. I thenmention that we wouldlike to talk to himabout exemptions. He emphasizes that he doesn't want exemptions, but thinks there may have tobesomething for it togo through.Hespecifically mentioned the Grandfather Clause that isexplainedin the ANR link yousent Monica. He saidsomething about themnot lasting long, but I'mnot clear onwhat he meant, andwe didn't have the opportunity to talk much more about it.I toldhim I would callhimtomorrow and talk to himinfurther detail about exemptions.I'llhave thepdf of that link yousent up Monica soI can attempt to rebuttalthe exemptions hementions. If youhave any further advice on negatavizing the grandfather clause one,now wouldbe the time to sendit to me:) 3 Also,at the end of themtg,he was outwardly enthusiastic about gettting to the committee reports andmentioned something that none of them wantedtohave to talk about.Bullock brought the "smoking bancommittee" up last andlet everyone know that the finalsurvey tally was 450 SUPPORTIVE & 30UNSUPPORTIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!! That'snot all though. He then says that they want to have a public forumto allow businesses and thepublic the opportunity to speak on it.He also mentioned the mtg the committee hasscheduledin June and talked like they wouldplan the forum during their discussions at that mtg. Thus, what I think we should do,isenact the action alert we were going tothe week of and days leading up to the public forumso we canhave a strong presence there.Andequally if not more important,we need to be actively recruiting people, and especially business owners, to come and say something about their supportive stance. In addition to talking about the FC's upcoming mtg @our next OCSF mtg,we need to also brainstormand strategize about who toask to come to forumtospeak. Lastly,Bullock; in what seemed like a sarcastic tone tome; saidto McKenney that they didn't have anordinance yet.I really do think they are wanting an ordinace tailoredto Ohio County to have inhand.Like you saidbefore,I think Greg wants that part of his job done for him! I had to leave shortly after the committe talks were over cuz had another mtg @6:30,but theonly other comment made pertaining toordinance while I was there was by McKinney, who suggestedthey follow up with the 30 people who sent inunsupportive surveys to see what their concerns were.I'dlike tosee what his plan for that one isconSidering they were anonymous! CONwill eventually have access to hospital's 1" floor classroom andat least the long room behind the vending machines on the 6th floor (not sure if we'll have other space there). Needs mentioned by faculty: oResearchintern space (one comment that Lobby computers not always in use ... 1 commented how hard it was to figure schedules andeven which interns actuaUy would use those computers) oStorage: Materials Documents (Giahas many of her docs inher office; some RICHdocs in 413; some of our supplies in 5th floor corridor.) Questionraisedabout archiving andI noted we do that twice a year as documents eligible for archiving. Giamention need for separately climate controlled room for things suchassalivasamples(not refrigerated ). Some oftheir research materials in Dentistry now.
