By the time Anna Jarvis died in 1948, Mother's day was celebrated in 40 coun-tries around the world. Her fight to make this a national holiday spread around the world in just 20 short years. Although in the end she was opposed to the mass commercialization of the holiday, it has grown into a world holiday.

In Argentina it is customary to honor Mother's with dinner, poems, and flow-ers. The husbands clean, cook and take care of the children on this day. The chil-dren write letters and poems and gather to read them to their mother. In France the focus of Mother's day was on the re-population following WWI. Mothers were awarded medals based on the num-ber of offspring they had with eight or more earning them a gold medal. Today with the adaption of the western holiday a cake resembling a bouquet of flowers is the common gift for a mother to re-ceive.

Mother's day celebrations were very prevalent in Japan until WWII when all western customs were banned. When the war ended the holiday was once again taken up but now it was a way to comfort mother who had lost children in the war. This holiday was celebrated every four years with children drawing pictures of their mothers - the very best would tour throughout Japan. Today they have once again taken up the western holiday and mothers are prepared dishes that they have taught their children to prepare as well as being given flowers, scarves and handbags.

In Yugoslavia there is a three day cele-bration to honor the family starting with children's day. During Children's Day the

children are tied up and not released until they promise to be good. The next to be celebrated is Mother's day she is also bound until she gives the family candy and treats. The last in the three day cele-bration is Father's day the father is also tied up and must promise to buy the fam-ily gifts, these gifts are used to celebrate Christmas which is the next day.

While the United States' version of Mother's day is the most widely recog-nized, most give gifts of flowers and cards. Treating mothers special on this day, some countries still relate Mother's Day to a more religious importance, such as in Spain where Mother's day is direct-ly tied to the Virgin Mary and the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. Where- ever you are in the world celebrating your mother is important no matter how you do it.

FAMOUS WORDS

Interesting Facts

You Never Knew

“The seasons are what a symphony

ought to be: four perfect move-

ments in harmony with each oth-

er.”

Arthur Rubenstein

Did you know . . . 85% of

plant life is found in the

ocean.

Did you know . . . Lemons contain more sugar than

strawberries.

Did you know . . . The long-

est recorded flight of a

chicken was 13 seconds.

Did you know . . . 8% of people have an extra rib.

Did you know . . . Ralph

Lauren’s original name was Ralph Lifshitz.

I love all the seasons but if I was to choose one over all the others it would probably be this one, the sea-son when the daylight hours start to get longer, the weather gets gradual-ly warmer and the world as a whole gets greener. With spring here, no doubt the thoughts of many have turned to-wards giving the home a thorough spring clean. There is something about spring that makes us want to open our home, letting as much of the new light and warmth enter through our doors and windows as we possibly can. The act of spring cleaning is thought to have originated in Persia when on the first day of spring people "shook the house" to bring good luck for the season ahead. Our reasons for spring cleaning today are more mundane, it is the first opportunity we have after the cold and wet winter to give the house a "good fettle" as my grandma would have said. But like the Persians we can also use this as an opportuni-ty to bring luck and abundance in to our home. One of the principles of Feng Shui, and one of the easiest ways in which we can attract harmony, balance and good luck to our lives, is to have a home which is clean, well maintained and free of clutter. Which is exactly what we aim to achieve when we give our home a spring clean. By giving our home a spring clean we are auto-matically helping to refresh and revi-talize the positive energy in our home, helping it to flow and circulate more easily. Think about how you feel after you have had a relaxing bath, or spent a few days giving your body a detox. This is how your home feels once you have swept away the cobwebs, pol-ished the floors, repainted the front door and mended the leaky tap that has been driving you mad all winter. It feels better, refreshed and the en-ergy inside is more positive.

If you want to attract more good luck and abundance to your life, and in the process give your home a good spring clean, following the principles below will give you and your home a head start. And you and your home are sure to feel better as a result. Make sure the entrance way to your home is well maintained and free of clutter. The front door is where posi-tive energy enters and you want nothing to get in the way. Give the door a fresh coat of paint or varnish, strip away any dead plants that are at the front of your property and in-side make sure all those winter coats in the hallway are put away. Walk around your home making a note of anything that does not work as it should. Winter always tends to bring some household problems such as leaking pipes or damaged fences or tiles. Ensure that anything that is not in good repair is mended or re-placed as soon as possible. Clear away the clutter. Move any boxes, papers or anything that you do not use regularly to somewhere safe and out of way. If you have any-thing that you don't need give it away or sell it. When you are moving items do not store them in a corner of the room, in a little used room or under the bed. Energy needs to circu-late throughout the whole of your home and if you block it you may end up having difficulties in the area of your life where the blockage is. Give everything a polish to make it shine, paying particular attention to any glass or crystals that you have in your home as the surfaces of these can get cloudy. Cleaning and polish-ing your belongings has the effect of recharging the energy in your home. Finally once you have spring cleaned your house walk around it and focus on your hopes and desires for the coming few months.

Happy Spring Cleaning!!!
