Albany, GAAlbany is a city in the U.S. state of Georgia, and is the seat of Dougherty County. Located in southwest Georgia, it is the principal city of the Albany, Georgia metropolitan area. The population was 75,769 at the 2014 U.S. Census, making it the eighth-largest city in the state. the Albany, Georgia Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) had an estimated population of 157,308 and ranked 252nd in the U.S. in 2010.

Albany sits at the center of Southwest Georgia, a storied region closely tied to America’s early Indian culture, the antebellum age of the Old South and the time-less sport of fishing and hunting. Lying below the land around Albany is the

Floridan Aquifer, an ocean of fresh water that feeds the area’s rivers and creeks and fuels its economy.

Today, although the city is surrounded by pecan groves, pine trees, farms and plantations, almost none of the population is employed in agriculture. It is heavily mechanized. The city itself, however, is surrounded by a river which separates the two divisions of Albany.

Health care, education and the Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany are the largest employers. Manufacturing, transportation, and retail trade are also important foundations of Albany’s economy, and the city acts as a hub for commerce in southwest Georgia.
