KCC Calls New Minister, from page 1 Indeed, the Search Committee believes that God has led both our committee and the whole of KCC to this exciting moment in our ministry. Despite the relatively short time we have known Rev. Kistler, it feels like he genuinely understands our church and our community. His passion and energy are unde-niable, his gift to communicate and relate to others is incredible, and he has a tremendous sense of humor. Through prayerful discernment and with enthusiastic conviction, we unanimously recommended and presented Rev. Kistler to the congregation as our candidate for the position of minister at Kensington Community Church, inviting him to lead our worship on August 12.

Over the candidate’s weekend, congre-gants met informally with Rev. Kistler and participated in a worship service he planned and led. After the service, his background and the terms of service were discussed.

We look forward to getting to know one another better, growing together as a faith community, growing Kensington Community Church as a welcoming place and serving others together through the grace of God.

Guepin, Angie Gutierrez, Edith Mason, and Gayle Trempe

Know of a Rental for Darryl and Sasha? We are enlisting the entire circle of KCC members and friends to help Darryl and Sasha find a suitable place to land. They would like to rent for a while before buying a place so that they can discover which neighborhood they'd like to call home. If you know of anyone who has a rental, or anyone who knows anyone who might have a place in mind for them, please for-ward Darryl's information onto that person. Keep in mind that Sasha and Darryl will be bringing with them a 7 year old 55 lbs husky, a 5 year old 55 lbs German Shepherd and a kitty. Darryl's information is: (Email) [email protected] and (Cell) 406-270-0603. Thank you.

High Tea Brought High Pleasure & Community Building Lander Hall was beautifully decorated in a garden theme with 15 round tables set with lacy tablecloths, China tea cups, saucers and plates. Nearly 70 guests attended -- many from outside of KCC (since the main purpose of the event was to host people not affiliated with the church). Each table had its own teapot and three-tier server filled with all sorts of savories (small sandwiches, quiches), fruits, and deserts (lemon bars, brownies, gooey butter cake, mints, and cupcakes). Sharon Young took photos of the participants and the decor (which can be viewed in full in the Photo Gallery on www.kensingtonucc.com). Ron Morebello entertained by playing beautiful music during the entire tea. Our thanks to those who attended and/or invited others; everyone seemed to really enjoy themselves. And special thanks to the Committee, the many volunteer workers, and to those who loaned their China and decor items. Our church should really be proud of all the tireless and enthusiastic effort that went into making this such a wonderful event in the Kensington community. Thanks all of you for your part in this festivity!

KCC Sends 11 to Purdue for National Youth Event Eight young people and three adults attended the National Youth Event, a conference held every four years for UCC teens. Thanks to gifts from the congregation, the church’s endowment and from fundraising, we joined 2900 UCC youth in West Lafayette, Indiana. We shared twice daily worship, workshops, hot walks across cam-pus, fountain runs to cool down, and late nights in the dorms talk-ing with new friends from around the world. Our favorite aspects?

The gospel choir, Tribe of Ju-dah. who turned up the volume on praise!

War hero and “Dancing with the Stars” champion J.R. Martinez who taught us to “adapt and overcome” in the face of enormous adversity.

Miah Yager, a teen with Down Syndrome, who spoke of her difficulty making friends and the danger of judging people by their outward appearance. See more: www.kensingtonucc.com

Vacation Bible School and Summer Sunday School Focus on Biblical

Foods & Feasts

All summer, our Preschool through 6th grade children have studied important foods

and feasts of the Bible. In Summer Sun-day School, the students have learned

about manna, quail, fish and wine as well as lessons of hospitality. Thanks to

Amy Winn, Debbie Loomis, Betsy Hamblin, Bonnie McCarthy, Becky Playman, and Judit Havens for all

the wonderful summer lessons, culminating in our August 26 Wedding at Cana re-enactment.

Similar cooking and eating themes were featured in the Shake It Up Café VBS to which we welcomed 28 kids. We learned about figs, the oldest fruit on earth, from Brock Allen and made Sukkot huts as part of a Jewish tradi-

tion for the harvest. We made “manna” bags for the homeless, as well as dinner table crafts for our families. More than 20 volunteers, most of them

teens, made the week sweet and safe for our little guests. Thanks!

Pride Contingent & Shower of

Stoles Affirm Our Welcome

KCC embraced our Open and Affirming status during Gay Pride weekend in San Diego, hosting a

national exhibit, Shower of Stoles, as well as sponsoring a walking

contingent in the parade. Fifteen of us represented KCC in the parade, and the

church hosted two open houses for the stole exhibit -- one for Partnership church friends and

another for the congregation and community. Thanks to Debbie Loomis, Katie Loomis and Carla Mathison for organizing the exhibit and

parade details and to Michaela Clegg for photographing the events.

KCC’s Ruth Cole Library – In the Beginning … KCC is fortunate to have both an adult library and a children’s library.

Here’s how these wonderful libraries came to be: The KCC library was es-tablished in 1957 by Guild Reading Chairman Ruth Cole (top left), beginning

with a nucleus of devotional books gathered by Ruth (Martin) Eh-lers and the first Prayer Group in 1954. Ruth Cole was assisted in

organizing the books by Faith Daskim, a member of the congre-gation who had worked for the Library of Congress. Ruth contin-

ued as church librarian for 31 years.

Ruth was succeeded by Sylvia Kellerlain (second from top left), a Navy librarian. In 1989 Sylvia was appointed librarian at KCC

and she continued to build the library until her death in 1997. Joann Morrison, third from top left, then took up the role and served as KCC librarian for 15 years, from 1998 – 2012. Jo-

ann was an elementary school teacher and librarian for more than 30 years, first in Oakland and later in San Diego. Joan-

n’s successor is Penny Ward, who recently retired after a 40-year career working in university, medical school, public-

health and hospital libraries.

The Ruth Cole Library has both fiction and non-fiction and is located on the east side of Lander Hall. The fiction sec-tion features best-sellers and classics. Other offerings in-clude Arts & Poetry, Biblical Novel, Biblical Reference, Bi-

ography, Church History, Current Issues, Devotional Litera-ture, History, and more. The children’s library is located on

the west side of Lander Hall.

Most books in the adult library are donated by church members, often in honor of friends or in memory of loved ones. In the early days, the reading

chairman of each Circle would bring a few books to share at Circle meetings and a few new books would be purchased for the library from Circle funds.

Books may be checked out for three weeks by anyone in the congregation. The library employs a self-service system: simply remove the card from the

book pocket, enter your name and the date, and leave the card in the box on the library table. Our hours? 9:00 – 11:30 on Sundays or during the

week, anyone may ask at the church office to gain access to the library.

Missions Update

Upcoming events will be the Sips for Shelter fundraiser on Oct. 13 at 7 PM (see flyer below) benefitting El Nido Transitional Housing for homeless and

abused women and children. We have no date yet for the Copley YMCA Christmas party. We usually give some of the stockings we make for the

Copley to El Nido for their party. We often also provide decorations or food for the party and gifts for our El Nido apartment residents.

A Letter from Rev. Kistler to KCC, Continued from page 1

so many wonderful and sweet people, full of hope and energy and spirit for what God will do

through us and our church. . .“Our church” … I like the sound of that. hope you do, too!

Sasha and I, together with our dogs and kitty, will

be in San Diego very shortly. We will say farewell in Kalispell, Montana Sunday,

September 23, and start our trek through Idaho, to Utah, to Vegas (baby!) to San Diego. I’ll be in

the office starting Oct. 1.

If you want the facts about me and my ministerial career, then I would point you to the KCC

website. But no one person is fully introduced by a list of dates or positions that they have held. What is more important is for

you to know that I love to laugh. I don’t take myself too serious though I take the responsibilities of the call to ministry in the name of Jesus Christ very seriously. This is apparent by two of my favorite books that I’ve ever

read, Sex, Drugs, and Coco-Puffs by Chuck Klostermann and Divine Empathy by Dr. Edward Farley of Vanderbilt Divinity School.

My wife, Sasha, is a beautiful, caring, intelligent (so much more intelligent

than I), and talented partner. She works currently in the field of educational technology. So, San Diego offers as much if not more in ways of profes-

sional advancement and development for her as it does for me. In fact, she was the one who encouraged me to initially send my ministerial profile to

the KCC Search Committee. She grew up in a small town on the prairies of eastern Montana called Miles City. And though she has small town roots,

she is excited to be moving to a cosmopolitan city with yummy restaurants and lots of fun things to do (and to swim in the ocean for the first time!).

We will see ya’ll in a few weeks. In the meantime, feel free to email me at

[email protected] or “friend” us on Facebook. Peace. Love. Understanding.
