CHORAL SILVER CELEBRATION - ATLANTA OPERA CHORUS WITH KSU CHAMBER SINGERSDIRECTED BY CHORUS MASTER WALTER HUFF September 16, 2014 | 8 p.m. | $15-55

In celebration of Chorus Master Walter Huff’s 25 years with The Atlanta Opera, the chorus will open the season with this special performance in September. Spanning 300 years of operatic choral repertoire, a performance of well-known masterpieces by opera masters Verdi, Mozart, Puccini, and Wagner will feature the powerfully moving voice of the acclaimed Atlanta Opera Chorus.

Don’t miss your chance to see and hear Maestro Huff’s Chorus, many of whose members fell in love with opera through the experience of performing under his direction. One chorus member puts it best: “Using voices to tell stories is what opera is all about. By expecting precision, artistry and vocal storytelling, Maestro Huff allows the Atlanta Opera Chorus to function simultaneously both as one large musical unit and as individual voices and characters.”

ATLANTA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA WITH JEREMY DENK, piano AND ROBERT SPANO, conductor September 26, 2014 | 8 p.m. | $15-55

The Atlanta Symphony, conducted by Music Director Robert Spano, opens its first of three KSU performances with Don Juan! The charismatic lothario comes to life in this vivid symphonic poem by Strauss. It’s joined by two works from Mozart, a well-known lover of women as well as music, who also had a keen sense of humor. His Piano Concerto No. 20 falls to the talented Jeremy Denk, “a pianist you want to hear no matter what he performs” (The New York Times), to play the dramatic concerto.

Then Spano leads the Orchestra in Mozart’s 35th Symphony, originally composed as party music but transformed into a commanding symphony. And last — Till Eulenspiegel, Strauss’s homage to a notorious 14th century prankster.

This is the first of three performances at Kennesaw State University as part of the Orchestra’s extended residency during the 2014-15 season.
