Dear Editor,I spent the last 2 months mapping out myancestry online after our visit to Bonane. We arrived with very little informationand I now know for certain that I am anO'Sullivan-Craith, from Releagh. You may recall the old postcards withCatherine/Kate O'Sullivan-Gallivan andJeremiah O'Sullivan and their weavingbusiness Handwoven Homespuns.Well...that's my Great-Great-Grandmother Kate. In fact, Kate wasborn in the home now known as MollyGallivan's (thanks to Stephen for hishelp). My great-grandfather also married a Flynn who was closely relatedto Captain Jack Flynn of Bonane. I have a SPECIAL thank you that I would like you to pass on ifpossible....because all of this wouldnt have been possible without Mrs.Sheila O'Sullivan (Rath). She and I email each other daily and she hasgone out of her way to help me. I was introduced to Sheila through Lisaand Sean O'Brien from The Ford Guest house, and Sean's father John JoeO'Brien (he drove me to Sheila's house). Since then, Sheila has introducedme to some of my cousins still living in the area who have also helped tofill in so many missing pieces; such as Eileen Corkery. We are now actively in search of a property to buy in/around Kenmare sothat we may get back in touch with our home land. Thanks again for spreading the word on our discovery!Mark [email protected]. “We’ve been here in Kenmare for over 27 years now” saysDerry Murphy, the owner of Murphy’s Super Valu.

We employ 50 staff directly in the Super Valu store and in2007 built the Kenmare Shopping Centre Complex.

This has helped to create a further 30 jobs for Kenmare through start up businesses.

Murphy’s Super Valu, Kenmare

We believe in Local

When asked about the importance of choosing to shop inlocally owned and managed business Derry had this to say.“We are not like our international competitors we supportour local economy through sponsorship, jobs and services. You must look at the bigger picture, we are in touch withthe community we live here and raise our families here.”Every euro spent in Super valu does more to help the localeconomy. It helps to pay our staff who in turn spend itlocally in pubs, restaurants and using local services. The

discounters actually take money out of the localeconomy. We believe in helping our customers savemoney on their weekly shop. By shopping the low pricesin our Super Valu Range, buying the weekly offers andusing your Real Rewards you will save money. We useLocal where possible so you can trust our food. Recentfood scandals have proved that knowing where yourfood comes from matters. Can you trust the others. Whenyou compare us to the discounters we simply offer more.

At the end of the day do we want to see our money flowing out of our locality and our country to foreign based

shareholders of large international corporations when we can choose local and benefit all in our community.

It’s Your Choice.

A healthy diet combined with exercise have long been associated with reducing riskfactors for heart disease and cancer. Recent evidence also suggests that goodnutrition is essential for our mental health and that a number of health conditionsmay be influenced by dietary factors. A balanced mood and feelings of wellbeingcan be protected by ensuring that our diet provides adequate amounts of complexcarbohydrates, healthy fats, essential amino acids, vitamins, minerals and water.

Because the “dry weight” of our brain is composed of about 60% of fats, the fatswe eat directly affect the structure and substance of the brain cell membranes.Saturated fats –those that are hard at room temperature like lard or butter – makethe cell membranes in our brain and body tissues less flexible. Twenty per cent ofthe fat in our brain is made from the essential fatty acids omega-3 and omega-6.They are termed “essential” as they cannot be made within the body, so they mustbe derived directly from the diet. Each fatty acid performs vital functions in thestructuring of brain cells or neurons, ensuring that smooth communication ispossible within the brain. Both are found in equal amounts in the brain and it isbelieved they should be eaten in equal amounts. Unequal intake of omega-3 andomega-6 fats are implicated in a number of mental health problems, includingdepression and concentration and memory problems. Experts suggest that mostpeople consuming Western diets eat far too much omega-6 and not enough omega-3. Naturally omega-3-rich foods include organic salmon and trout, tuna, flax oil, rapeseed oil, pumpkin seeds, soy beans and almonds.

The recent and widespread appearance of trans-fat in the diet (found in processedfoods like commercially-made cakes, crisps and ready meals) raises great concern, primarily because these fats assume the same position as essential fatty acids in thebrain, meaning vital nutrients are not able to assume their rightful position for thebrain to function effectively. Also the composition of proteins (amino acids) that weconsume has an impact on our mental health situation; Neurotransmitters aremessengers passed back and forth within the brain. They allow neurons tocommunicate information amongst themselves. Neurotransmitters are made fromamino acids which often must be derives directly from the diet. For example, theneurotransmitter serotonin, which is associated with feelings of contentment, ismade from the amino acid tryptophan.

When people have neurotransmitter imbalances or deficiencies, symptoms fromdifficulties in sleeping to feeling unmotivated or anxious can develop. There are some foods that can help the brain to release an efficient balance ofneurotransmitters. Food rich in Tryptophan (which is transformed to serotonin inour body) include fish, fruit, eggs, avocado, wheat germ, low-fat cheese and leanorganic poultry. Foods which help to increase GABA levels include dark greenvegetables, seeds and nuts, potatoes, bananas and eggs. A deficiency in GABA canaffect us in the sense that we find it hard to relax, cannot switch off or get veryanxious about things. Substances like caffeine, sugar, nicotine, refined andprocessed foods and also junk foods are only good at temporarily promoting theneurotransmitters that we lack. They only give us a short-term boost. Over the longterm, however, these foods make our brain less sensitive to it’s ownneurotransmitters which is one of the reasons why we crave these substances againand again. Much healthier than eating sugary foods is the consumption of complexcarbohydrates which release the glucose more slowly like in whole grains, vegetables and beans. Choosing foods that take longer to be converted from the rawstate to glucose means that your brain receives a more stable and consistent flow offuel with which to function.

Another important aspect worth considering is food intolerances. An independentClient Survey carried out by Allergy UK in 2005 says that 81% of patients withpsychological conditions (e.g. depression, ADHD or panic attacks) report moderateto high benefit after avoiding foods they were intolerant to as per the Lorisian FoodIntolerance Programme.

If you want to know more about food and its impact on your mental health pleasering us on 064-6679880 or call into McSweeney Pharmacy Kenmare and we will bevery happy to answer any query that you may have.

Kenmare Locality Animal Welfare SocietyThe start of winter seems to have arrived with a bang, with the dark nightsand the rainy days. At this time of year when people are adjusting to thedarkness we find a lot of animals get hit on the road by drivers. Please beextra cautious when driving in dusk.

Of course we would ask all owners of outside animals to ensure theyhave dry warm shelters with clean dry warm bedding and ample food andwater. During cold conditions they need extra feeding to stay warm. Please be vigilant and if they seem off form in any way, please seekimmediate veterinary medical attention. You are the eyes and ears of youranimal

We are looking for collectors to help us with our street collection on Saturday 20th December between 10am-6pm. Please call or email if youcan give an hour or two to help raise funds for the animals.

Government Slashes Over 450 Medical Cards for Over 70s in KerryOver 1,300 medical cards in Kerry Cut this Year. Figures released to me haverevealed the full extent of cuts to medical cards in Kerry with over 1,300 cardscut in 12 months, over 450 of these for over 70s.

These are appalling cuts and have had a major impact on people’s lives in allparts of Kerry. However despite claiming to have stopped these cuts and to beginrestoring medical cards the Government is still taking cards away from peopledesperately in need of them. I am dealing with cases every week of peoplehaving their cards withdrawn and then being denied their cards again on appeal. If you do need assistance please contact me.Government Agrees to Fianna Fáil Request for Dáil and SeanadDebate on Rural BroadbandI called on the Government to stop paying lip-service to the roll-out of ruralbroadband.

The Government agreed to my request for a full Dáil debate on the majorbroadband problem facing rural Ireland.

We have seen plans, targets and initiatives announced by the Government inrelation to rural broadband but the reality in communities across the country isthe service is not improving and in some cases it’s deteriorating. I will continueto fight for better service. Kerry jobs investment falls down the Government’s priority list I am extremely concerned about investment opportunities in the countryfollowing the release of IDA figures, which reveal there was only one site visitorganised by the agency responsible for attracting foreign direct investment inKerry this year. The data has found that there have only been five site visits inKerry since 2011, compared to more than 1,300 visits nationally.

I am pushing the Government to urgently reassess its strategy. It should beproviding more opportunities for young people in Kerry instead of forcing themto head to the capital or further afield in order to secure a job.Ambulance Service in Kerry Playing Russian Roulette with People’sLives Over 500 calls in Kerry to 999 take twice and three times the recommendresponse times of the HSE. Figures released by the HSE, following continuedinvestigation by me, have revealed that every day in Kerry 3 critically ill patientscould be waiting up to an hour for an ambulance. I have met with the Minister and the National Ambulance Service and askedthem to reinstate the 2nd emergency ambulance to Killarney and the ambulance

to Mill Street .Kerry Farmers penalised in unjust Finance BillA number of measures contained in the Finance Bill will have a detrimentalimpact on farmers in the county. The Finance Bill requires active farmers tospend more than 50% of their working time on their farms, however, thechanging farming landscape has made it a necessity for many farmers to alsohave full-time off-farm job to generate a sustainable income. I will be tabling anamendment to the Bill, which will protect genuine part-time farmers fromexcessive stamp duty payments. Reinstatement of funding for the Irish Deaf Society I successfully campaigned for the Deaf Society to ensure their funding whichwas cut was reinstated for the next 12 months. I recently met with local Kerryman Liam Breen at the Irish Deaf Heritage Centre. There are hundreds of books written on the art of fishing. Most, if notall of them, will tell you that a thundery day is no good for fishing asthe electricity in the air puts the fish off. I must admit, however, thatmy own experiences are totally at odds with this belief. To give yousome examples; one day on my favourite stretch of river the late JohnBell RIP was giving me a lesson on shrimp fishing for salmon. heshowed me how to set up a sliding float with adjustable depth and theway to mount a prawn upside down. ‘Now’, he said, ‘I will show youthe way to float it down where the salmon lie, we will try it off thebridge first as it is easier.’ The day had been darkening and, as helowered the prawn over the bridge wall, there was a loud crash ofthunder and a bright crabs of lightening illuminated the scene. Theprawn hardly touched the rivers surface when a salmon came streakingup from the depths and, swallowing the prawn, ran down the pool. There were more rolls of thunder and flashes as John played out thefish. The two of us forgetting the danger, John stayed on the bridgeand manoeuvred the salmon to river bank where I quickly netted a finefresh run nine pounder. On another occasion in beautiful Summer weather I was high up in

the mountain lakes trout fishing with my nephew Mark. The sun wassplitting the rocks when, suddenly out of nowhere, we were hit by athunder storm. Talk about claps and flashes, it was frightening as therain came deluging down. We dumped our carbon fibre fly rods andtook cover under a rock overhanging. The storm continued for aboutan hour and, as suddenly as it started was gone, leaving the sun shiningand blue skies. The only difference was that every runnel, channel, andstream flowing into the lakes were in flood. Well, talk about a greatdays fishing! All you had to do was drop the flies where the gushingwaiter entered the lake and bang, you were hooked up in the best trout

it has been my fortune to catch in many a long day. Marks catchesmatched mine and as the late Gorey Lynch, who was the first to showus how to fish these waters, used to say we ended up with two bigbaskets full of grand stumps of quality fish, not to mind all we releasedback into the lakes to fight again another day. Though a good few yearshave passed Mark still talks about the wonderful days fishing we hadin a thunder storm. I was fishing for the Irish team in the European Champsionships

which were being held on Rutland Waters in England and I was drawnwith a Scotsman for a boat partner. From the word go he left me in nodoubt from his demeanour and the few words that issued from himduring the day that he hated the Irish and Catholics in equal measure.Maybe another person would have left the boat but I am made ofsterner stuff and decide to ignore him and concentrate on the fishing. To my delight and his chagrin I caught several fine rainbow trout, whenagain out of the blue a thunder storm hit us. Talk about thunder andlightning, it was something else. The safety boats went round with loudhailers telling us all to stop fishing and make for the shore. One boltof lightening hit a gravel beach near where we beached our boat andthrew gravels and sones up in their like an explosive charge. OneEnglish anglers fishing rod got struck and his shoulder was paralysed,he was taken off to hospital. The competition was stopped with thefish caught up to that time being weighed in for the results. As we tiedup the boat in The Marina the Scotsman spoke his longest sentence tome. “ Are you from Northern Ireland?” I said, ” No,I am from a smalltown down in Southern tip called Kenmare. Where are you from?”“Edinburgh," was his response. “Is that in Scotland,” I asked, “I heardof Glasgow (knowing very well that they hate each other) but I neverheard of Edinburgh.” Gathering my gear and leaving him the miserablesod, I joined my friends as the competions results were being postedon a big screen. France came first, England second, and Ireland third. And I have a bronze medal to prove it. Who knows what the resultswould have been if the thunder storm has not intervened? The otherthree members of my team figured out we could have won, but thirdin Europe was not bad, and beating Scotland was even better. So nowyou know why fishing in thunder storms does not faze me atall. As Iam writing this article on Tuesday the Irish soccer team will be playingScotland on Friday night in the European qualifiers. Come on Ireland! PS In todays Irish Times former Scottish International Gordon

McQueen said the crowd should give Irish players McGready andMcCarthy a horrible reception. Come on Ireland.

The Kenmare Pink Ribbon Walk committee and all the people that tookpart in our walk this year have plenty of cause to celebrate after helping toraise €1,000,000 to benefit the Irish Cancer Society’s Action BreastProgramme. To date, over 10,000 people have walked 1,500 kilometres in15 Pink Ribbon Walks.

Since its inception in County Meath in 2009 by a group of local women, the Pink Ribbon Walk has turned in to a national movement, the firstKenmare walk took place in May this year. All of the walks will take placeagain in 2015 and the overall aim is to keep growing and adding moreevents and regions to the calendar. Each walk is organised by an entirelyvoluntary team of local women and men.

The Kenmare community has really taken the Pink Ribbon Walk toheart, with local shops and businesses dressing their windows and turningin to a sea of pink in the run-up to the annual event. Over this past year, many of the participants have had imaginative ideas for fundraising andhave held everything from coffee mornings to Sky Dive’s to 1980’sDiscos.

Kenmare Credit Union urges people in Kenmare to avoid unnecessary debtand moneylenders this Christmas. Kenmare Credit Union on hand to help youthrough the Christmas season with competitive 1 year loansChristmas really is about giving...not stretching the family finances. As the bigday looms, many families are deep in preparations for the Christmas holidaysand though it is a time of joy, it puts a lot of pressure on hard pressed parentstrying to give their families a holiday to remember.

We have all been guilty at some point of overspending during this holidayseason. It is easy to get caught up in panic buying and overspending whichmay result in many families becoming financially stretched beyond theirmeans, or having to borrow - in some cases from moneylenders. But this doesn’t have to be the case says Kenmare Credit Union who hastoday launched their annual Christmas campaign. The campaign urges thepublic to avoid borrowing beyond their means to avoid a sack full of debt inthe New Year.

In December 2013, the Irish League of Credit Unions found that 60% ofIrish consumers believed there is nothing nicer than a proper Irish Christmasand on average planned to spend €590 at Christmas. This was an increasecompared to €527 in 2012. 50% of Irish consumers expected to borrowmoney to get through the Christmas period - borrowing on average €410 perperson. For some people however it can take up to 9 months to recover fromoverspending at Christmas and this is why the credit union want to advisepeople to be sensible and think hard about what they are spending their moneyon.

Michael Gavin, Manager at Kenmare Credit Union said, “While peoplereally enjoy the build up and the time spent with family, many tend to overspend and in many cases get themselves into debt unnecessarily. We want toencourage people to plan ahead and avoid this situation in the future by goingto their credit union and starting a Christmas savings account for next year. This way you can put a little bit away every month and not have to worryabout sourcing additional money at Christmas.”

He added, “Setting a Christmas spending budget is more important now thanever as is writing a list. This will allow people to keep a tight rein on theChristmas shopping costs. Staff at Kenmare Credit Union are happy to sitdown with you at any stage and talk to you about a budget plan or a loan.”MyBudgetBuddy. For smart phone users the credit union has created a freebudgeting app called My BudgetBuddy - it is an easy to use personal moneymanagement app compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, iPad and Androidhandsets. My BudgetBuddy will help you keep track of your spending andhelp you make maximum use of your income. With the app you can also sendbudget information to your PC, so wherever you are, you know where youstand.

Michael Gavin concluded, "If you have to borrow for Christmas be sensible.Borrow where the interest is right.....not on your doorstep. Come in to talk tous about our 1 year loan!"

It has been such a joy to welcome a number of new members intoour group. What a difference it makes, a bit like decorating a room, the basic stays the same but we suddenly have new life. I don'talways have the time I'd like to talk, but it really is good to seethem.Unfortunately Cara Frost Jones is unable to talk to the group onWeds.19th, due to an accident at home. But the Red Cross societyhave offered to come on that date, to talk about the work they do,and we thank them for stepping in at such short notice. Our glorious summer finally disappeared, but at least it shortened

our winter months. The rain and darkness had to come, buthopefully we are better able to cope with it.Our spring programme is almost ready to go to print! Medical Cards. I have again raised in the Dail the issue of the continued cuts toholders of medical cards throughout the country. In Kerry alone over 1,300 medicalcards have been stopped in the last 12 months.

This is an outrage and the Fine Gael and Labour politicians who are supportingthe government and agree that peoples medical cards be taken away from themhave an awful lot to answer for. Elderly people, young couples with sick childrenwho have had their medical cards taken away form them are outraged as I am. Iwill continue to campaign for the restoration to people with disabilities and peoplethat require a full medical card. Mental Health Day Care Centre. The HSE is currently in the process ofrecruiting a CNM2 for the new mental health care centre in Kenmare. The post hasbeen offered to staff currently on a CNM2 panel and I would be very hopeful thatthe post will be filled in the coming weeks. This will enable to the opening of thenew day care centre in kenmare on a 5 day week basis.Orders for Sheep Dispatch Document Books. The issue of dispatch documentshas been raised with me over the last number of weeks. The following isclarification from Minister Coveneys office of the procedures and the timelineinvolved.

“Further to your recent query regarding the processing of orders for books ofsheep dispatch documents, the system that the Department has in place to managesuch orders is explained below.

Orders for books of sheep dispatch documents are generally processed within amaximum of two weeks from the date that the order is placed, and often morequickly than that. Each book of documents contains a page reminding the flockowner to order a new book of documents at least a month in advance of when it isrequired. However, this timeline is provided to allow for any exceptional delaysand to ensure that the flock owner always has a supply of documents when needed.

Books of sheep dispatch documents are printed on specialised paper and eachindividual docket, printed in triplicate, contains a separate serial number, togetherwith personalised information relating to the flock owner's name, address and herdnumber. Accordingly, it is necessary that each order is individually printed.Because of individualisation required, flock owner orders are processed in bulk ona weekly basis, as it is not financially viable to process individual orders.

Orders are typically processed each Tuesday, based on the requests received inthe previous week, and take one week to complete.

In addition to the above, the Department provides a service whereby flockowners can obtain emergency documents from their Regional Office of theDepartment, should the need arise. Such emergency documents contain the samepersonalised information as that presented on a standard book of documents and

they are accepted at all factories, marts etc. However, because they cannot be printed on specialisedpaper, they are only suitable for use in anemergency situation. Emergency documentswill normally be downloaded by the relevantRegional Office and posted to the flock owneron the same day that the order is received.Details of the emergency document facility areprovided for flock owners in the standard bookof documents.”Local Issues. Report by Mary Declan O'Neill. This is the brave Charolais cow, who has been named 'Sirenia' (meaning seacow). She crossed Kenmare Bay on the Halloween Weekend; she swam threemiles through rough sea water, leaving her farm in Lohart, on the BearaPeninsula, and ending up on rocks at Lackeen Blackwater which is on theIveragh Peninsula.

David O'Sullivan Baker was out for an early morning walk with his wifeBrigid, on the October Bank Holiday Sunday when Bridget spotted the animalat around 8.30am. It was a chance sighting as the area is all woodland and butshe caught a glimpse of an animal, through the trees. As they got closer theyrealised it was a large Charolais cow about 650kg stranded on the cliff below. They wondered how the cow got there as there was no access to it bar from thesea and that wasn't great either as there were only rocks and cliffs. Could shehave been washed down the Blackwater River in a flood and climbed up fromthe sea, there was no other explanation.

David contacted local farmers Geoff Mahoney and Thomas O'Connor andthey rang around to see if anyone was missing an animal but nobody was.More people started to gather, amazed the cow had managed to swim in suchweather as there was a high spring tide, with a good swell in the water. Theprevious day and night had also been rough also and unsuitable for fishingaccording to local fisherman Joe O'Sullivan. The men got chain saws and cut aclearing through the trees so the cow could be brought to safety. They put ahalter on her and coaxed her with nuts but she was very nervous and afraid toclimb over the rocks so they decided to leave some food and leave her comeup in her own time. They had cleared a path and they hoped she'd come up forthe nuts; the tide was rising which was another incentive for her to get to dryground.

They returned at around 4pm to find her up and eating ivy in the woods. Shewas calm and in good health. They took her ear tag no and asked GeorgeO'Neill who works in Kenmare Mart, to check it out on Monday when he wasin at the sheep sale.

It turned out she belonged to Timmy O'Sullivan Batt, who lived across thebay in Lohart, Tuosist. This was an amazing development, how could a cowswim that far and why. The Batt family were contacted and sure enough theywere missing the cow, they had been searching high and low for her andthought maybe she was stolen.

When news came that the cow was found Timmy was both shocked anddelighted to hear his cow was safe but he could hardly believe that she was

strong and fit enough to cross the bay, especially in rough weather. Why didshe do it? Nobody will ever know. Did she fall into the sea, or did somethingfrighten her. Her calf had recently been weaned so was she searching for hercalf?

Did she hear cattle calling on the other side of the bay and think her calfwas over there. It may be the most likely explanation but it is an amazingstory of survival and endurance and also she was very lucky to have beenspotted.

When Timmy heard his cow was found safe and well at 4pm on the MondayBank Holiday, he came over straight away and collected his cow and took herhome where she is now indoors for the winter. Her story has been told on Kerry Radio and every local and nationalnewspaper in the country covered the story, so 'Sirenia' the sea cow, is nowquite famous!

The Blackwater Women’s Group held a series ofevents throughout the month of October tosupport the UNICEF appeal to help orphaned, injured and traumatised children in Gaza returnto school. They decided that rather than askpeople to just donate money, members wouldhost events and pass on all monies raised to thecampaign. The events ranged from Keep-Fit, Yoga andRelaxation classes to Movie and Card nights,

Coffee Mornings and High Tea Evenings, HomeDecorations and a Parent and Toddler Party.Several of the women baked cakes and offeredrefreshments at the events, and most werekindly facilitated at The Blackwater Tavern byMary and Teddy O’Neill. While the group are involved in mainly localand some national campaigns, this is the firsttime that they have dedicated their efforts to aninternational cause.

“Initially I set an ambitious target of raising1,000 and was thrilled when we actually hitthe 1,800 mark. The Blackwater Women’sGroup were outstanding in their efforts, andUNICEF have expressed their deepappreciation.” said Chairperson MaireadRobinson who added that in an atmospherewhere fundraising for charities is particularlychallenging, this was a wonderfully heart-warming achievement by the group.

November in the garden isn’t very exciting !!! Theweather has certainly taken a sudden dive into theonset of winter. Not too cold but very wet whichmakes any job out in the garden more timeconsuming and all a wee bit muckyer !! But thereis the odd good day with bright winter sunshineand a chill in the air when we can get some workdone, and on the wet dreary days we can startgetting ready for Christmas by planting up bowls, baskets and various containers with floweringhouse plants.

1. THE LAWN still needs some attention andthe grass has continued to grow much later thanother years. The grass could still do with a trim tokeep it neat and tidy and will help to pick up fallenleaves. Raking these leaves off the grass prior tomowing may be necessary if there is too many forthe mower to collect. Don’t let these leaves pile upfor too long as the grass will suffer and it willencourage moss to grow.2. SHRUBS could do with a pruning toencourage more compact growth next year.Remember not to prune spring flowering shrubs atthis time of the year. Attractive winter floweringshrubs are just beginning to produce buds.Viburnum, Skimmia, Mahonia and winter heathersare useful in adding to any shrub bed to provide atouch of colour during the dark winter months.Over the next few months it will be a good time forplanting up hedges using bare rooted plantingmaterial so make preparations now if you arethinking of planting new hedges or replacing somethat still haven’t recovered properly from the bad

winters of a few years ago.3. TREES should be checked over now to see ifthey need supporting for the winter and removeany damaged branches that may have been torn inthe recent winds.4. WINDOW BOXES and PATIOCONTAINERS can be planted up with a widerange of winter flowering plants like, Pansy,Cyclamen, Pansy, Viola, Primrose and underplanted with spring flowering bulbs that will giveyour containers a new lease of life in Februarythrough to April. Dwarf conifers, trailing ivy, silverleaved plants and the berried Gaulthera can all beadded to any arrangement for added contrast.5. The VEGE garden and FRUIT gardens allbegin to take a ‘time out’ now ! Keep them clean, free of weeds and free of decaying vegetation.Cover with well-rotted manure or seaweed to helpkeep weeds under control and to add nourishmentfor next season.6. WEEDS on driveways or cobbled areasshould be treated with an application of Roundup. This will knock back any of the late emergingweeds which have kept on growing with the milderautumn we have just had.

7. GARDEN FURNITURE should be putinside the shed or covered over to prevent themfrom suffering through the constant wetness of thewinter. This way they will last much longer andwill be nice and dry for treating in the spring.8. CHRISTMAS HOUSE PLANTS areavailable now and will add colour to your homeover the holiday period. Poinsettias have becomethe seasonal favourite but can suffer if not givenplenty of warmth. Azalea, Solanum, Hyacinth,Xmas Cactus, Orchids and Cyclamen can takecooler room conditions and are more tolerant tofluctuating temperatures. Use any of these plantsindividually in baskets or bowls or use incombination with other green plants like ferns, conifers, ivy.. etc to make your own livingarrangement.9. CHRITMAS TREES will be in full swing bythe end of the month. Noble and Nordmund Firhave taken over completely from the pricklyChristmas trees of years ago. These new varietieshave softer, bluish/grey/green needles which willstay on the branches well into January.10. LIGHTS and DECORATIONS are alsoavailable out in the Garden Centre, so come alongand see what we have in our Christmas shop atWillowfield while you are out getting your tree. Wealso have a good selection of battery lights forthose hard to reach areas inside and out that youwould like to light up. Plenty of gardening giftideas as well.

So, until next month when it will really beChristmas, Happy Gardening ! Hoe ! Hoe ! Hoe !

Turbo training has re-commenced in theKilmurry Business parkon Tuesday and Thursdaynights at 8pm. Why notbring along your bike andtry it out? Turbo is notjust for elite triathletes orcyclists but for all levelsof cyclists from beginnersonwards.

Kenmare Tri Club are offering a special deal for the next six weeks. Thecost to non members for the twice weekly session for six weeks is €45,plus Triathlon Ireland insurance €18.50. Turbo will be free to members ofKenmare Tri club. The cost of joining the club, which includes TriathlonIreland associate membership, is €58 from now until December 2015.This is done through the Triathlon Ireland website but we will provideaccess to the website next Tuesday 25th at the beginning of the training. You will need to bring a visa or debit card in order to complete paymentonline. If you register online yourself please bring the confirmation emailto show your membership. Here are some answers to the questions you might ask about turbo. What is a turbo trainer? Turbo trainers are quite simply a device thatenables you to ride your bike, stationary, indoors. As such they havebecome the de facto training equipment for the winter months. Turbotrainers, or turbos as they are commonly known, clamp around the quickrelease skewer of a bike’s rear wheel suspending it in an A-frame. Thisframe positions the rear tyre so that it sits on a roller, as you pedal andspin your rear wheel the roller turns too. A resistance unit is attached tothe roller and uses air, fluid or magnetic means to vary resistance againstwhich you are pedaling. Why use a turbo? Many riders see turbo time as tortuous and orextremely boring, so opt not to use them. However, even those that dislikethem acknowledge turbos as a great tool for targeted training andmaintaining fitness. Winter is often seen as turbo time, as icy conditionsmixed with rain, wind and generally unpredictable conditions makesheading out on long rides no fun. Choosing to turbo is a safer and moretime efficient riding option. Avoiding bad weather is a good enoughreason to use a turbo, but the real benefit is to use it as an effective methodof training, as you can work on any specific fitness component and focus atraining session to the second. This is why many elite riders use them year

round focusing their sessions andsupplementing their road miles.Turbo trainers also allow for intense efforts tobe completed without worrying about traffic, road junctions or undulating terrain that doesn’tallow for constant, steady state efforts. Whethera speedy sprint session or a longer intervalpyramid there’s a specific session for whateverit is you’re looking to improve.Similarly it’s great for those tight of time, ortraining after work in the winter when it’s toodark to head out on the road. Just a 30 minuteblast on the turbo every other day before orafter work can have major benefits on youroverall fitness levels. With research showingthe effectiveness of high intensity, shortinterval training on cardiovascular fitness it’llreally benefit those with little time to ride.Just bring a bike, a towel and some water.Congratulations to club member KatherineO’Sullivan on being first lady home at theHumpty Dumpty Duathlon last month.

Inter Kenmare Fundraiser. We are againorganising a market day stall this year to fundraisefor Inter Kenmare Soccer Club. Last year proved tobe a great success so we want to give it a go againthis year. It is that time of year when everyonestarts to organise their house for Christmas andmaking room for Santa. If you have any unwantedclothes (on hangers if possible), shoes, toys, smallfurniture, lamps, ornaments etc. and these items areclean and in perfect condition, and you thinksomeone else would buy them, then we would loveto have them. I will arrange for items to becollected from November 23rd to November 26th.My email is [email protected]. Thankyou.U7 / U8 Blitz. A big THANK YOU to all theparents who braved the monsoon like weather inKillarney for the U7 and U8s blitz. The ladsenjoyed the games despite the rain and the futurelooking good for Inter with some very talentedplayers on show.U11 Group 3 Sat November 1st Mastergeeha 7-3 Inter Inter made the journey to Mastergeeha for theirfirst league game of the season and were beaten bya strong home side. There were alot of positives totake out of the game given that 8 of the starting 10were having their first game for Inter.DaraCasey,Billy Noonan and Timothy o Donoghue alldefended well with Micheal Sweeney making somegood saves in goal,in midfield ConorHenessey,Ellen Harrington,Yago Cornide andCathal Murphy caused Mastergeeha all sorts ofproblems and up front Darren Allman and JimmyKelleher will score lots of goals this season.Overallthe lads played very well and will only improve fortheir next game.U12 Div 1 Sat November 8Inter 9-0 Killarney Celtic B Inter made it two from two beating anunderstrenght Celtic side,Mark Casey,PatrickBisogno,Simon o Connor and Owen o Shea wereall solid at the back and Daniel Gaine made acouple of great saves when needed.Once againTadgh o Donoghue and Jimmy Lehane dominated

midfield with Oisin Fox and Aodhan MacGearailtworking very hard up and down the wings but itwas a day for the strikers with Corey Murphy andMark Torpey scoring three each.Simon oConnor,Oisin Fox and Tadgh o Donoghuecompleted the scoring.U14 Div. 1 Sat. October 11Ballyhar 1-1 Inter KenmareInter Kenmare made the trip to Ballyhar for theirfirst league game of the season and came homewith a well earned point, that being said they wereunlucky to not take all three. Ballyhar started thegame the better of the two sides and had someearly half chances but Inter where alert andgoalkeeper David Chiuciu was off his line early toclear any danger. Inter started to get their gamegoing and where playing well from the back withtheir full backs starting to get on the ball andcreating some lovely passing moves with the Intermidfield. Inter kept the ball well for large periodsof the first half but found it hard to find waysthrough the Ballyhar defence with Boki Nikicbeing tightly marked by two and three Ballyharplayers as they looked to reduce his impact downthe left wing. As it started to look like no one wasgoing to make the breakthrough Inter got the luckybreak you need to change these games when anInter attack was broken up but the ball landed atthe feet of Boki just inside the box and hecontrolled and shoot in the blink of an eye leavingthe Ballyhar keeper rooted to the spot. Inter reallyhad their tails up now and pressed until the end ofthe half but Ballyhar held the score to just one athalftime. Inter made their first substitution at thehalftime break with Colin Crowley coming on forJoseph Healy who had run himself into the groundin the first half in the holding midfield rolebreaking up numerous opposition plays. Joseph is anew member of the squad this year and is making abig impression as is the player who was moved to

holding midfield JackFoley who is also anew addition to thesquad. Inter started thehalf nervy and almostlet Ballyhar in for agoal but Dan and Cianwhere keeping thingstight in central defenceand Inter where soonback where they leftoff. Inter introducedtwo more substitutionswith striker DionMurphy making wayfor Daniel Crowleyand holding midfielderJack Foley makingway for Mark Looney.Despite Inter playingsome good football andstarting to adjust wellto what is a newformation for them thisyear Ballyhar wherestill dangerous playingfast balls into thechannels for theirforwards to run ontoand they got theirequaliser from onesuch move. An Interattack was broken

down and played quickly through the midfield andonto the forward line with Inter hesitating on twoseparate tackles Ballyhar worked the ball down theright and a deep cross to the back post was headedpowerfully to the net. Inter seemed a bit unsettledby this and a little too much confidence by the Interkeeper had hearts in mouths as he went to roundthe Ballyhar forward and almost got caught butmade the pass to his teammate just in time. TomMurnaneand Boki where starting to get a littlemore time and space on the ball and really itlooked like a matter of time before Inter added asecond. Inter made their final substitution withDylan Cusack coming off for DarraghO'Brien whoimmediately got the ball, turned and took on theisolated full back making ground beforeBallyharforced it out for a throw. Inter pressed onwith chances falling to Colin, Bokiand Tom butfinal touch was hard to make count as Ballyharpressed hard and gave little time to dwell on theball anywhere around their box. In the end Interhave come away from a good Ballyhar team with apoint and while they may feel they had the chancesto win the game a point away to Ballyhar firstgame of the season is a great start to what lookslike a promising season.Sat Oct. 25Camp 6-1 Inter KenmareInter kenmare made the long journey to camp witha squad reduced in number due to illness and othercommitments. After the coin toss Inter had anotherobstacle to deal with in playing against a strongwind for the first half. Inter started the game wellenough competing with a strong camp side butafter about 5 minutes the wind started to make adifference on the game with Inter finding itdifficult to make headway out of their half. Campon the other hand we're finding it much easier tomake quick changes from defense to attack withthe aid of the strong wind at their back and helpedthemselves to a 5 nil lead at halftime. The secondhalf proved to be a much more even affair withInter keeping possession well but finding itdifficult to get true a strong camp defense.Inevitably the goal came with good work down theright by Cory Murphy and a finish by TomMurnane. Inter were now finding space easier tocome by and were making Camp work hard butwere unable to convert chances into goals. Campwe're still a treat going forward and a free from justoutside the box was hit over the Inter wall and intothe net. Inter kept playing until the very end andshowed great determination in a second half whichfinished 1:1. It is worth noting that camp are one ofthe strongest teams in this division and a fullstrenght Inter Kenmare team will be a far tougherproposition at home.Reports by Thomas O'Sullivan
