I was just watching Italy play Belgium in the 2016 EuropeanChampionship and, for a country that is not slow in putting on a showof deep emotion, the Italian’s cool and calculating style of football, both in attack and defence, won the day. Final score was Italy 2 toBelgium 0. Bonjourno Italia, my favourite European country, everything inItaly is about style and sleek design. Their beautiful cars Ferrari, Maserati, even Alfa Romeo, ooze stylish looks and I would love to own one if I werea rich man. Factor in their food and wine, the countryside, especiallyTuscany, their wonderful old buildings and the artists such asMichelangelo and Leonardo Da Vinci and, above all, their sense of fashionwhich is second to none, both men and women can look well dressed inplastic bags. I have never been there but it is on my list of 50 things to do before I die,

so who knows? I must mention that the footballers dressed in their shirtsand shorts still managed to look classier than the others. After all this lyrical outpouring you will say to yourself, well this fellowmust be a fan of Italian football and you would not be too far wrong.‘Pirlo’, now retired was, in my considered opinion, the best football playerbar none, his inch perfect passes were a thing of beauty. As for ‘Buffon’ asgoal keeper still playing after all those years, he again, I will stick my neckout and say was the best in the world in his day. At this stage of my articleyou will be asking yourself where is his angling report, this has nothing todo with fishing. But in a roundabout way it has.A few short years ago a man going down fishing for sea trout in

Waterville came into the shop and bought what was then a quite expensivefly rod and off with him for his few days angling. He was lucky to meetand catch several fine specimens of fish and was delighted with the rodscasting and playing ability. As bad luck would have it, as he was packinghis gear to leave after his few good days fishing what should happen, butthe car door slammed shut in a gust of wind and broke his rod top inpieces. He was devastated, he had found a rod he enjoyed fishing with and now

it was no more. He called to tell me of his loss and I told him to holdtough, and I would contact the company to see if we could get a new top.

‘Ring me immediately if you do,’ he said, which I promised to do. Actually things worked out better than expected and a few days later a newtop arrived to me by post from Scotland. Picking up the phone, I rang himto pass on the good news. On answering he told me he was over the moon with the good news, and

at the moment he was pulled into the side of the road to speak to me as hewas on his way to Cahir to interview Giovanni Trappatoni, the thenmanager of the Irish team who was opening a pitch up there for the FAI.Well, this was all new to me as I never knew the man was a sportsjournalist, but I had always admired Trap. One, because he was an Italian, two because he was a renowned footballer and three because he was asnappy dresser. You would see him on TV or photos in the paper with the most glorious

clothes, suits that fitted him like gloves, the most beautiful rain coats andover coats, you would never see him in the same clothes twice. As for hisshoes, well they were something else. He was style. Wouldn’t you love tosay, for once in your life, you could have the finance and guts to be as wellturned out as Trap? I said to your man, ‘Are you really interviewing him?’ ‘Yes,’ was his reply. ‘Could you ask him a question for me, as I am just curious.’ ‘What is the question,’ he asked.‘Ask him what does he do with his old clothes.’‘For feck’s sake I can’t ask him that,’ was his reply. So, there you have it, because a journalist was afraid to ask the hardquestion, we will never know what Trappatoni does with his old clothes. The good news is that nobody will have to ask Martin O’Neill or RoyKeane what they do with theirs, because who cares?

On Sunday June 12th a few Kenmare Trout Anglers Club members, six in all, climbed up to The Caha Lakes. For the views and theachievements in getting up there, that alone were worth it. The fishing wasa bonus, as usual plenty trout were caught but the lakes levels were neveras low and the condition of the fish was so poor that none were kept. Alsothe lack of insects was very noticeable, and the vegetation on the hills hasreally changed since my young days. Gone is the purple heather and hutbushes, grasshoppers and bumble bees, to be replaced by a strong heavygrass and midges. Is this the future? I hope not.

We will blame the government for the beautiful fine weather and thebad fishing, we have to blame something. Salmon fishing is still slow, sea trout fishing ditto. Brown trout and rainbow’s not too bad, mackereland pollock a few but scattered. Bass poor. However, it is worth a tripdown the bay to see the huge shoals of dolphins. Maybe this is why theother sea fish are scattered?

Don’t Mention the ‘B’ Wordby Heike O’SullivanBrexit. There, I said it. A potential British exit

from the EU. How many times have you heardor read the term ‘Brexit’ since it was coined in2012? Without a doubt at least one time toomany. The media, political analysts, economistand many others ‘in the know’ are having a fieldday speculating as to which way Britain willvote on 23rd June, and about what possibleeffects a ‘Leave’ vote may (or may not) have onIreland. As many different people one listens to, as

many contrasting viewpoints are encountered.Whilst there are many observers commenting onhow disastrous it would be for Ireland if Britishvoters would elect to leave the EU,contradictory opinions predict benefits forIreland from the possibility of multinationalcompanies and manufacturers leaving Britain infavour of Ireland. One thing everybody seems toagree on though: No one can say for certain howthe global economy would react in case of a‘Leave’ vote, nor what many practicalities of

everyday live would look like, for Brits andIrish alike.Various questions are occupying peoples’

minds on an entirely personal level, apart fromthe greater economic issues. Inevitable changesto the Common Travel Area, in operation since1923, is a major concern to many residents oneither side of the Irish Sea. Irish and Britishofficials are reportedly “acutely aware” that thehair-raising possibility of having to again sealthe border between the Republic and the Northwould be virtually impossible. However, speaking on 10th June, Taoiseach Enda Kennystated that he can’t personally see any wayaround introducing border checks post-Brexit,given that Britain’s border with Ireland wouldthen be Britain’s border with the EU. Suchscenario would be a major inconvenience for thecirca 30,000 daily commuters between theRepublic and the North, as well as tourists andthe world of commerce.Second-level students in the North, intending

to progress to third level education in theRepublic may also encounter potentialproblems. Trinity College Dublin, for instance,

launched its Northern Irish EngagementProgramme in 2013, in a bid to become auniversity “for the whole island of Ireland”.This year, 885 students from Northern Irelandapplied to study in Trinity. Will these studentsface having to apply for a VISA post-Brexit, andwill they have to pay the much higher non-EUtuition fees? The situation of the estimated 288,000 Brits

living in Ireland (and, of course, those living inother European countries such as Spain orFrance) has also been the subject of muchdiscussion, particularly here in Kerry and Corkwhere so many elderly Britons have chosen toretire, often less for a love of the country butmore for economic reasons. The ‘Remain’campaign has engaged in some scaremongering,a former attorney general suggesting that Britishcitizens living in EU countries could become“illegal citizens overnight”. More balancedcommentators suggest that, whilst it is entirelypossible that Brits living abroad post-Brexit mayno longer benefit from EU healthcare or socialwelfare payments, it is unrealistic to think thatthey will be deported from those EU countriesthey reside in. However, it may also be possiblethat future immigration to Ireland from Britainmay be restricted. And the dreaded word ‘Visa’has been mentioned more than once. Perhaps itis due to all of this, that anyone applying for anIrish passport at present is experiencing longdelays. Reportedly, this is not only due to Euro2016 but also due to a rush of those Brits whoqualify for Irish passports wanting to pre-empt apossible Brexit and gain dual citizenship inorder to “travel, live and work freely in aEurope of open borders”. By the time this latest issue of your favourite

local paper, the Kenmare News, is published on23rd June, voting in the Brexit referendum willbe well under way. No one knows which wayBritish voters will swing, nor – if they vote toleave the EU – how the British government’sexpected two-year negotiation of the ‘divorceterms’ with the EU will go and what changesthose negotiations could bring. No matter howthe Brits will vote: Let’s all hope for the best.

Small Roads festival of Theatre and Dining doesn't want all your free time. Just the fun part!

‘Full Circle’opens atCarnegie ArtsCentre on 1stJuly 2016, 7 pm.It signals CorinaDuyn’s return toKenmare, theArtist's firsthome in Ireland27 years ago.

This month long exhibition will bring the visitor on ajourney of discovery through imaginative sculptures ofbirds, roots and mystical figures, and finely woventapestries. Her deep connection and appreciation of natureis ever present in her art and in her (four) books, all ofwhich are available during the exhibition.

Her most recent publication ‘Into the Light, a book-in-a-box,’ was described as ‘a hug in a box’ by a youngcancer patient. Sister Stan expressed in a recent talk,“..Into the Light is not just an ordinary book, it is a deeplyspiritual, inspirational work. The story of challengesovercomes through courage; of fear overcome by hope, ofdarkness overcome by light ... It makes for anextraordinary presentation.”

To make the works accessible to many, there arepostcards, bookmarks, books, prints, as well as a secret-auction for some of the sculptures.

Brushwood Studios will introduce the exhibition, followed by a talk by Corina and screening of shortdocumentaries about her creative life.Further information www.corinaduyn.com www.carnegieartskenmare.ie

We didn’t make it into the last Kenmare News so I will tell you whatKenmare & District Garden Club has been doing recently.

At the end of April we spent a very pleasant day at Dereen Gardens finishingwith a super lunch at their new restaurant. The highlight of early May for 19people was a 5-day trip to north Wales which was fantastic and for once, theweather was kind to us. We covered a lot of ground seeing gardens and nurseriesalike including Sir Clough Ellis’ Arts & Crafts garden Plas Brondanw and hissmall town of Portmeirion, Hidden Gardens at Plas Cadnant which were aplanters’ paradise in a valley, famous Bodnant Gardens and not least, Crûg FarmPlants with exotic trees and shrubs. Almost immediately after our return, theClub then had a most interesting talk and slide show by Hester Forde entitled‘Small Treasures, Troughs and Raised Beds’ about the interest that scree areasgive to one’s garden and she demonstrated how to plant up a trough with alpineplants.

On June 2nd we had a very interesting talk by Janet Dunlop Hawker onPermaculture. To quote Janet’s brochure ‘Permaculture for gardens is aboutdesigning your garden to fit into your lifestyle at the same time as getting asmuch out of the garden as possible and reducing your environmental impact’.We were all fascinated by pictures of the regeneration of over-used land bychanging planting methods and plants used.

On June 16th there will be a day trip to Churchill Gardens, Fenit, Tralee, avisit to Liscahane - a very interesting nursery & garden centre - and finally DhuVarren Gardens. As you can see, we are a very active Garden Club and if youwould like to join us then do please give Geraldine a call on 086 3935965. Youwill be most welcome.

Emergency motion regarding Post office changes. The following was submittedto Kerry County Council for the June monthly meeting, " That Kerry CountyCouncil calls upon An Post to leave the sorting of Post in their currentlocations and not centralize the sorting in a few locations throughout Kerry.” Ibelieve An Post wish to take the sorting of post to a smaller number of locationsthroughout Kerry, An Post wish to close the Kenmare sorting office at KenmarePost office and move it elsewhere. I have also contacted the Minister forCommunications Denis Naughton TD in relation to this. We need to keep what wehave in rural communities and the moving of the sorting office from Kenmarewould also have a negative effect on the greater area. It would also be moredifficult for An Post staff. I will work with politicians of all sides to campaign toretain our services. Gladly no Post office has closed in Kerry in the last 6 yearsand we campaign to ensure this remains the case.CEO of Kerry County Council Visit to Kenmare. Following on from bringingthe meeting of South & West Kerry Municipal District to Kenmare on 15th April,on Friday 3rd June I arranged for Moira Murrell CEO of Kerry County Council tovisit Kenmare also in attendance from Kerry County Council were Manager of theSouth & West Kerry Municipal District Martin O’Donoghue, Niamh O’SullivanCommunity Dept. and Siobhan Griffin Liaison officer for the South & West KerryMunicipal District. They met with two representatives each from the Chamber ofCommerce, Tidy Towns and Kenmare Marketing & Events Group. Senator Dalyand Councillor McCarthy were also in attendance. Various issues were raised withCouncil management and I would be hopeful that many of these would beaddressed.Coast Guard – Kenmare Bay. On Friday 15th June I organised forrepresentatives of the Iveragh Coast Guard to meet with people in TemplenoeCommunity Centre to have preliminary discussions to explore avenues for peoplein the Kenmare area becoming members of the Coast Guard or possibilities offorming an inshore rescue service, a further meeting will be held during thesummer. I have forms available if anyone wishes to apply to become members ofthe Coast Guard. The Officers outlined the practicalities, time commitment, set upcosts, and the fact that they get involved in so much more than search and rescueon the water. They also outlined how much they loved helping their community. The people at the meeting felt it important that something is set up this side ofKenmare Bay especially after the tragedy of Bill Topham’s drowning earlier thisyear. Extra chefs and catering staff needed. I will be raising the following at the nextmeeting of Kerry County Council- that the Council call upon the Dept. ofTransport, Tourism & Sport to make incentives available to attract more Chef’sand people to the catering industry. Currently Restaurants and Hotels in Kerry areexperiencing severe shortages.Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance. This year's production from Blackwater DramaGroup 'The Perfect Crime' was another action-packed, very entertaining, original two actcomedy. The local drama group have beenwriting, improvising and producing highlyoriginal and entertaining material for the past sixyears with the support of Kerry Education andTraining Board under the direction of EileenO'Leary their Drama Coach. The group is made up of local people from the

Blackwater area who draw on stories andtradition from within their own community, andindeed their own imaginations, to form the basisof their productions. For the past three years thegroup have also been writing individual shortplays which they perform during the wintermonths, while work on the two-act annual

production continues. Topics in the past have included the coming of

electricity, match-making, the stations and evenmurder, and each production approaches thesubject matter with humour and both historic andcontemporary references. The group also drawson the enthusiasm and support of the wholecommunity in assisting in bringing eachproduction together. This year's play 'The Perfect Crime' was set in

2014 and included a colourful trip to Dublin forthe All Ireland Final, where Kerry won thedouble defeating Donegal in both minor &senior games. The Loughbrin Monster got amention along with some dubious fundraisingideas which were all for a good cause. Therewere a few twists and turns along the way and

plenty of fun & a few surprises as usual. Theplay ran for four nights over two weekends inJune. The Blackwater Drama Group would like to

thank all those who helped with this year'sproduction; KETB who supported the DramaClasses, the members of the BlackwaterWomen's Group who helped front & back ofhouse, the stage management team, the men whoorganised the parking and everyone whoattended the event and supported the event inanyway. They would also like to thank thosewho sponsored raffle prizes, Councillor DanMcCarthy, Senator Mark Daly, McSweeney'sPharmacy & Blackwater Tavern. Many thanks toeveryone again.

New Coast Guard Unit for Templenoe / Backwater / Kenmare.I am delighted that our excellent Coast Guard Service is recruiting atpresent new personnel in the Templenoe/Kenmare area. This is terriblyimportant, as at present, there are 16 personnel based in the Watervillearea. We already have an excellent into-rescue in the Caherdaniel area, butnow we are recruiting more personnel in the Templenoe area which is soimportant in the interest of saving lives and assisting at times ofemergencies. I would encourage all, particularly young people who areinterested, to contact Iveragh Coast Guard Unit on their Facebook page.By doing this, we will ensure we have necessary personnel, from BolusHead up to the Kenmare river, to ensure the safety of the lives of thepeople who may be participating in water sports, hill and rock climbing, and all that goes with holidaying, living, and walking along our coastline.I want to thank and compliment the members of the Coast Guard and allvoluntary rescue personnel who give up their time completely freely, giveup their home and family life for training, and do everything they can toprovide an excellent service which can be appreciated by all of us.Rural Independent TD’s. The Rural Independent TD’s made up of DrMichael Harty, Michael Collins, Mattie McGrath, Michael Lowry, NoelGrealish, Danny and Michael Healy-Rae meet on a weekly basis with theMinister Denis Naughton.

I wish to advise particularly small business owners thatthere is a grant of up to €2,500 available of matching funds for companiesof 10 employees or less to set up websites etc promoting their businesses. It is very important to remember that €14,000 per minute 24hrs a day isbeing spent by the Irish people online and only €4,000 of this is actuallybeing spent in the Republic of Ireland, this is a shocking statistics and Iwould urge small businesses to avail of the grant while it is available.Contact my office for further information.Kenmare Opticians. On behalf of myself and Cllr Johnny Healy-Rae wewould very much like to welcome Geoffroy Meynet, MAOI, BSc Optom,ED who will open Kenmare Opticians located in Brosnan’s Pharmacy, 19Henry Street on 8th July. The Taoiseach acknowledged during a Dail debaterecently the fact that it is obviously far more proper to keep elderly peoplein their own homes rather than being in hospitals where possible.

Referring to my continuous campaign to ensure that Home Help hourswould be provided at weekends where necessary.

The Taoiseach agreed that home help should be provided on Sunday’swhere people need it stating “That is an issue the Minister will consider inthe context of the extra adjustment made to the health budget. I do notthink anybody in the House would disagree with the concept of peoplebeing able to stay in their own place in their senior years for as long as ispossible”, the Taoiseach also stated that “The intention is to increase theextent of home care packages so that more people can stay out of hospitaland be in their own place - kitchen, sitting room and bedroom - while theydo not have to be institutionalized”.

This is in the programme for Government and families should be awareof this fact, and should insist on it where an elderly person needs care onthe weekends and where families cannot just manage themselves.Kilgarvan Agricultural Show. The new Minister for AgricultureMichael Creed has agreed to an invitation that I sent to him to officiallyopen the Kilgarvan Agricultural Show on Sunday the 31st of July 2016.The Show committee are delighted that the Minister acknowledges theimportance of the Kilgarvan Show by officially agreeing to open it.RIP Denis Healy. We are all very saddened by the passing of the lategreat Denis Healy of Main Street, Kilgarvan and late of Healy-Rae Park.Denis was a great community activist, who was involved in every part ofour committee be it sport, the Kilgarvan Show, the vintage club and ofcourse always a great supporter of all Healy-Rae campaigns. 63 years later... and The Roughty River keeps bringing them back!Thank you to Laurence Kirk from Downpatrick, who kindly shared with us hisearly childhood memories fishing on theRoughty at Ardtully from when his fatherwas invited by D. Oulton to fish in 1953 whenhe was 9 years old. Laurence returned thisSummer, 63 years later!

“A Lasting Childhood MemoryOne of my earliest memories of fishing was onthe Roughty River with my father, who was anacquaintance / friend of the Oulton family fromKenmare. At that time we were living in Londonderry and Mr Oulton was a regularvisitor at our home. He stored his smallcollapsible two seater fishing boat, in myfather’s garage, which they used when theyfished in Donegal. ( Dad said at the time itwas covered with pig skin ? )My father, Hector Kirk was a consultant surgeonat the then City and County Hospital in Londonderry and I always called Mr Oulton (Desmond) ‘Dr Oulton’. I’m not sure now thatthat was correct. They could have met throughgolf as my father played a lot at the City ofDerry club, it was known as Prehen Golf Club inthose days. They also could have met fishing inDonegal as dad was a constant visitor to thelakes and rivers in that part of Ireland. Otherthan that I don’t know what Desmond Oulton

was doing in Londonderry. We were invited to Kenmare to fish the Roughtyon the Ardtully beat in 1953 and we stayed asguests in his home at Muxnaw Lodge. I was nineyears old. We caught live shrimp / prawn with a net nearthe Kenmare Bridge area and then later, in thekitchen, blanched them in boiling waterwatching as they turned pink. They used them asbait later to catch the salmon. I can rememberthe old Ardtully Bridge, and also sitting on alarge outcrop of rock while I dropped stones into

the river to move the salmon. Perhaps it worked,as my father caught two salmon that weekend. As my wife and I were coming to stay in KittyMcNally’s cottage ‘Sil Na Mara’ for a fortnightsholiday, I decided to bring my fishing gear and Iwould try to find the old bridge where we fished63 years ago and relive a memory. I drove outthe Kilgarvan road and spotted a lane that ledme to the ruins of Ardtully Castle ( which I don’tremember ) and beyond it I recognised the oldbridge immediately. I was also able to point outto my wife the exact rock upriver (which is nowrather overgrown) where I had sat in 1953!Quite a coincidence don’t you think?I wanted to fish the same stretch this year, sohaving a licence, I got a permit in O’Hare’s inKenmare to fish on Monday 23rd May 2016.Unfortunately, being a spate river and no realrain, the water was quite low and no fish wereseen but nevertheless I had an enjoyable day.Incidentally, Muxnaw Lodge has changed externally quite a bit from my first visit. I calledand spoke to the present owner Hanna Boland, who runs the house as a bed and breakfast. She very kindly gave me the recent history ofthe lodge. My father died in 2005 aged 91 years, so this ismy memory of that trip 63 years ago which fuelled my love of fishing to the present day.Laurence Kirk”

Ticks are tiny spider-like creatures which are commonly found inwoodland, moorland and other grassy areas, particularly in dampundergrowth. The reason why we should pay some attention to those littleinsects is that some of them can transmit Lyme disease to humans with atick bite. Lyme disease is an infection caused by a spiral-shaped bacteriumcalled Borrelia burgdorferi. If ticks feed on an animal infected withBorrelia burgdorferi they will also become infected and can pass on thebacteria to people and domestic animals.About 10 to 15% of ticks in Europe are infected and research has shown

that ticks collected in the areas of County Kerry, Galway, Connemara andWicklow carry the bacteria. Actually, recent estimates suggest that thereare at least 50 – 100 confirmed Irish cases of Lyme disease per year.Ramblers, campers, mountainbikers and people who work and walk inforested, grassy areas are at greatest risk of being bitten by ticks and ofgoing on to develop disease. The infection is generally mild affecting only the skin, but can

occasionally be more severe and highly debilitating. The first symptom ofLyme disease is often a rash (erythema migrans) that can appear 3 – 30days after the tick bite and spreads outwards from the initial bite site.People can also complain of “flu-like” symptoms such as headache, sorethroat, fever, stiff neck, fatigue, muscles aches and joint pain. Occasionally, there may be some serious symptoms developing at a later

stage involving the nervous system, joints, the heart and other tissues.Lyme disease can be treated with antibiotics. They are generally given forup to 3 months to ensure that the bacteria have been killed. The bestprotection against Lyme disease, however, is to protect yourself againsttick bites when walking in grassy, bushy or woodland areas. Make sureyour arms and legs are covered, wear long trousers tucked into socks orboots. Wear shoes, not sandals. Also, consider using an insect repellentcontaining DEET. At the end of the day, always check your and yourchildren’s bodies thoroughly for attached ticks including skin folds suchas armpits and groins. If however, you have been bitten by a tick, do not panic as only a small

minority of the insects carry the infection. In general, the longer the tickhas been attached to the skin, the greater the risk of passing on thebacteria. Remove the tick (ideally with tweezers) by gripping it close tothe skin and wash the area afterwards with soap and water. If you removeit within the first hours after a bite you are very unlikely to develop Lymedisease. However, if rash or other symptoms develop later on, see yourGP and let him know that you have been exposed to ticks. If you are looking for more information about tick bites or Lyme

disease, call into McSweeney Pharmacy and we will be very happy toanswer any queries you may have.

Crisis looming for Kenmare Mens ShedOur landlords have advised usthat they must to take back ourpart of their premises forrefurbishing. We understand andaccept their reasons and wouldlike to thank them for theconsideration they have shownus over the years.Unfortunately this means that

we will have to leave thepremises by the end of thissummer. We are now desperate to find new premises where we can continue to

meet and provide services to our members and the public. We have beenin contact with local representatives to see if they can assist us. Howeverwe are also appealing to the general community, if you know of anypremises/site where we could set up a new shed please let us know assoon as possible. There are over 300 Mens Sheds now in the country and Kenmare was

one of the first to be set up. There has been a lot of hard work done to getKenmare Mens Shed operational over the years. To lose this, after all thathard work and effort over the years by so many, would be tragic.Other Sheds have found solutions to the similar problems. For exampleCastlemaine Mens Shed recently set up in a donated pre-fab, which theysited on a field given over to them on a long lease. Their Facebook page(KC Mens Shed) shows the wonderful efforts they have made to convertit into a great social facility. This is a great example of community effortand help. I am sure Kenmare can do similar. Please put on your thinking caps …we need your help. The sooner we have something in place the sooner we can get it up and

running-before the season turns and we are facing the winter rains etc. Wewould prefer to have something as close as possible to the town but areopen to any ideas. The importance of the Mens Shed to the members cannot be overstated.

It is a safe, welcoming place where men can go to meet, have a cup ofcoffee, share experiences and work together on projects. It has a verypositive effect on members. As we say on our Facebook page KenmareMens Shed, ‘where men in the Kenmare and general area, of all ages andbackgrounds, are welcome to socialise and share skills in friendlysurroundings.’You can contact us through facebook ‘Kenmare Mens Shed’ page orby e-mail at: [email protected]

Dancers from the Hegarty School of Irish dancing who took part inthe Fó-chomortaisí Na Mumhan in Cork earlier this month. Over 30 children from the local school took part and they were thrilledwith their successes, trophies and medals heading to the kingdom. The FóChomortaisi (Mini Munsters)is a stepping stone to the bigger event theMunster Championships, when they reach a certain grade.

'Every child matters' is the ethos of their school and while they competeto the highest level, World Championships, it's not all about competitionsas they have plenty children in the class who do not compete. Theychoose to do their grade exams or travel on our class trips which weorganise every second year; non competitive fun events. This year the school is representing Ireland in the Lowendar PerranCeltic festival being held in Cornwall in November. Fundraising eventsfor this festival will take part throughout the next few months in our localarea including a danceathon, flag day and 5k run and everyone iswelcome to join them.

Kenmare Dental Clinic. Following a recent motion I put forward toKerry county council regarding the re-opening of the HSE dental clinicin Kenmare, I received the following reply “Kenmare Dental Clinic wasclosed in 2012 due to staff retirements and the recruitment moratorium. All schoolchildren from the Kenmare area are accommodated in theKillarney clinic. A member of the Killarney clinic was allocated to theKenmare schools and this remains the situation”. However I feel thatthis does not resolve the issue and I will continue to lobby for the re-opening of this clinic in Kenmare. Kenmare Town. At a recent meeting where I had the opportunity tomeet with the chief executive of Kerry County Council, I along withgroups among the community were given the opportunity to raise issueswhich are affecting Kenmare town including parking, street trading, public toilet facilities and bus parking. Blackwater Bridge. I would like to thank most sincerely members ofAn Garda Shiochana, fire brigade and Kerry county council workers fortheir swift work in repairing and re-opening this road which wasdamaged in a flash flood. Farming. Silage wrap has risen by 25% in the last 5 years, I have askedKerry County Council to raise this issue of increasing cost of silagewrap with the Minister of Agriculture. Dog micro-chipping. I have asked Kerry County Council to waiver thedog license fee for one year due to the additional costs of micro-chipping dogs. I have also requested that those caught without a micro-chip be allowed an additional time of 6 months to rectify this before anyfine can be issued Roads. I have asked Kerry County Council to insist that hedges on allroads be maintained as this I feel is paramount to keeping our roads safe. Drama. Well done and congratulations to the Blackwater drama groupon such a fantastic production. Also to Sadhbh Moriarty who wrote adrama which was produced recently in the Carneigie Arts Centre bestwishes in the future. Ring of Beara cycle. Congratulations to all who took part andorganised the ring of Beara cycle, an event which boosted the economyof the locality of Kenmare and was enjoyed by all. Little Acorns preschool and crèche. I would like to congratulate allinvolved in little acorns as they celebrate 10 years open best wishes inthe future. I was honoured to attend the celebrations.Clinics. I am available every day in Kenmare Mart. I also hold clinics insouth and west Kerry throughout the month. Cllr Dan Mc Carthy,Kilcurrane East, Kenmare Co Kerry 087-6846513 087-2224411 (worknumber)

The brave minister for tourism, sport andspeed limits, Shane Ross*, is to hop in acar with Kerry rally driver, Alan Ringand race around the Ring of Kerry toshow one and all that you can actuallydrive the full speed limit and still onlykill sixteen sheep and a cyclist. The Ringis a national road and everybody knowsthat speed limits of ONE HUNDREDKILOMETRES PER HOUR apply to national roads. That is the law! Afterthis pleasant little spin I expect the minister will quickly change that law, having first changed his pants. Being also the minister for tourism Mr.Ross will appreciate that overtaking foreign drivers (average speed35kmph) on blind corners is great ‘sport’, for which he's also minister. Now, you see how they align such things under one ministry, Transport,Tourism and Sport. Who comes up with it?

The popular bet is The Minister and our brilliant rally driver won't getthrough Blackwater Bridge without slowing down to ninety five, but thereyou have the crux of the matter. Will they pass Blackwater Bridge at all, atall. Maybe the Ring is only considered a ‘national’ road because it runsfrom one ‘very important, wow!, town’ to one ‘excruciatingly overvampedtown’, meaning Killarney to Killarney, often taking sneaky shortcuts upfrom Sneem. You see, for example, the Dingle peninsula south has onlyregional road status, being from Castlemaine to Dingle and back. Therefore eighty kilometres per hour is good enough for them.

Now, if the minister drives the True Ring of Kerry (Kenmare toKenmare) and passes over Blackwater Bridge going east or west I believehe'll re-designate the whole thing as regional, a reasonable eighty km perhour, almost safe for walkers and cyclists and stray sheep - all of whomconcern him except the sheep. That falls under agriculture. There's an idea. The Minister for Agriculture could sit in the back seat. What a show toamuse us of an autumn evening. And while you're down ministers youcould drop into our SMALL ROADS festival of Theatre and Diningfrom October 6th to 17th. Note the title, Mr. Ross. Small feckin' Roads!* It should be noted that Mr. Shane Ross (on whose sense of humour we

rely) is only just in the job and will, of course, be (speedily) fixing this andother anomalies around the country. Hint to government and administrators in general. Be foolish, if you reallymust be, but don't advertise your foolishness to millions of visitors atregular intervals along the road ... especially just before sharp bends.

Summer time and the gardening is far from easy !The unpredictable weather makes forward planninga wee bit hard at the moment and you still have tomake the most of any dry spell to get the gardeningjobs done. At least we have managed one long spellof dry, sunny weather already this summer whichenabled us to get a lot of the summer bedding andpatio plants planted in and around the garden, butafter that the weather has been very unsettled. Letshope that we can get some further good dry spellsin July and August. So get as much of thegardening work done now so you can enjoy thefruits of your work during the summer !The most important task over the next few weeks isto finish getting your summer flowering plantsplanted up. Window boxes, hanging baskets, tubs, pots, barrels, boots, wheelbarrows…you name it,just plant it up ! This is an exciting time to addcolour to your garden and to brighten up your patioareas or balconies for summer barbeques andeating outside in the evenings ! There is a widerange of plant varieties to choose from withdifferent colour flowers and different growth habitsfrom trailing ivies and Petunias to miniatureconifers and the traditional Geranium. Whenplanting up you can add slow release pellets tomake fertilizing easier and ‘swell gel’ can makewatering a bit easier as well as it will help thecompost retain water. As for the mixture of plantsyou choose it is entirely up to yourself ! you canchoose a certain theme for your containers withshades of reds and pinks for example or go madand make every container different. Whatever youwant as you will be the one looking at it, soexperiment a bit and enjoy the colour ! When youhave the arrangements growing away , watch outfor slug attacks and greenfly as well as checkingyour containers for watering each evening. It maynot be necessary to water every evening but just getin to a habit of checking them and you can see ifthey are under attack from any bug or slug ! If youdidn’t add any slow release fertilizer at the time ofplanting add some liquid feed when watering.

Follow instructions regarding frequency ofwatering as each brand would be different.Out further now into the garden the lawn hasbecome an abundance of daisies and buttercups inthe ‘’ natural ‘’ lawns. If you are in favour of alawn of grass and no interruptions, spray with alawn weedkiller that will only kill the weeds orspread a 3 in1, lawn fertilizer which also contains amoss and weedkiller. This will selectively kill theweeds and moss at the same time as encouraginggrass growth. Apply just before a wet spell so thefertilizer can get washed into the ground. As we approach mid-summer the range of shrubsthat are coming in to flower is increasing. One ofthe best shrubs for this time of year is theHydrangea. This has always been a traditionalfavourite for any garden. It thrives in wetconditions as well as being tolerant of dry spells. Itcomes in a wide range of flower colours in threedistinct shapes. There is the more traditional ’Mophead’ varieties, then there is a more delicate andintricate flower head of the ’Lace Cap’ range. Thethird type are the cone shaped flower clusters of thetaller, spiky, ’Panniculata’ types. All of these aregreat shrubs to have in your garden . This yearthere are several new varieties available as well asa range of flower colours in the ’Black Diamond’range that has almost black coloured leaves which

provides a fantastic back drop for their deepcoloured flowers. On another note, the shrubs thathave already flowered this year like Camelias,Spirea, Choisya, Forsythia..etc can be pruned backnow so that they can start sprouting again with newgrowth and time to produce the buds for nextspring’s flowers.Summer flowering perennials are beginning to puton a good show now; Astilbe, Agapanthus, Dahlia,Lupins, Delphiniums, Gallardia, and Nepeta aresome of the most popular but watch out for slugattacks on the Lupins, Dahlias and Delphiniums. The young shoots of these could easily getdamaged when growth starts early in the spring. Itwould be advisable to start supporting the tallerperennials like the Astilbe, Dahlia and CrocosmiaLucifer as their sudden soft growth could get easilyflattened by a summers gale or a sudeen thunderydownpourAnd as for the vegetable garden…everythingshould be in full swing ! Potatoes are growing welland will need earthing up and spraying againstblight. There is still plenty of time to sow seeds ofsalad crops and even peas and beens for latesummer harvesting. The warming soil and the bit ofrain we have had recently will speed up thegermination of all these seeds. Watch out for slugsagain, as they will be there every night waiting forthose delicate shoots to appear above the soil whenthey will nip them off before you can see them !Sow peas and beans in containers inside toencourage quicker germination and plant out whenthey have toughened up a bit. Fertilize the growingcrops with some Pelleted Poultry Manure as thisgives a slow release of fertilizer over a few weekswhen you can then repeat the dose. And remember to find some time to sit back, havea BBQ, bottle of beer and enjoy !Call out to us at Willowfield Garden Centre forfurther advice ..or just a chat !
