Vitamin D is essential for all of us as it helps to absorb calcium and phosphateand thus keeps our bones healthy and strong. It is different from otheressential vitamins because our own bodies can manufacture it with sunlightexposure. This explains why we have to watch our Vitamin D intakeparticularly in the winter months where there is inadequate quality andquantity of sunlight to enable sufficient production of Vitamin D by the body.Even on sunny days in the winter, the sun’s rays are of the wrong type for theproduction of Vitamin D. In addition with more people working indoors andusing sunscreen when outside, Vitamin D from sunlight exposure hasdecreased.Besides sun exposure we can obtain Vitamin D from our diet and from

supplements. However, dietary sources are often not consumed in sufficient quantities to

counter the lack of sunlight exposure and particularly do not form part of theweaning diet for infants. Examples of dietary sources of Vitamin D includeoily fish -e.g. salmon, mackerel and sardines- egg yolks and fortified foodssuch as milk and breakfast cereals. In addition, offal meat such as liver andkidney are a good source of Vitamin D, but these foods are not suitable forinfants and pregnant women, because they provide too much Vitamin A.Vitamin D deficiency can occur when the body does not have enough

Vitamin D to properly absorb the required levels of calcium and phosphate.Mild to moderate Vitamin D deficiency can lead to bone pain and weakeningof the bones (osteoporosis). More severe levels of deficiency can cause thedevelopment of rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults. There is also growing evidence that a low Vitamin D status has a negative

influence on our immune system and our mental health and may contribute toa range of chronic diseases e.g. hypertension, cardiovascular disease, diabetesmellitus type 1, some inflammatory and autoimmune diseases and some formsof cancer. Unsurprisingly, a significant risk factor is a lack of exposure to thesun. Other factors include overuse of sunblock, being pregnant, breastfeeding, being aged under 5, having darker skin, being housebound or spending longparts of the day inside. The official recommendation in Ireland for the supplementary use of VitaminD is for infants from 0 to 12 months as they are at the highest risk to developVitamin D deficiency due to rapid growth during this period. The dailyrecommended dose is 5ug. Apart from that the Department of Health in theUK recommends that also children up to five years and people aged 65 yearsand over take a daily supplement of Vitamin D.Looking at the multiple advantages of Vitamin D however, it may be a goodidea for all of us to consider taking a Vitamin D supplement over the dullwinter months. If you want to know more about Vitamin D, phone us on 064-6679880 or

call into McSweeney Pharmacy Kenmare. We will be more than happy toanswer all the questions you may have.

Do you love to read? Are you a confidentwriter? Do you have some spare time?If so, why not consider volunteering as an adult literacy tutor. The AdultLiteracy and Basic Education Programme of Kerry Education and TrainingBoard operates with the help of volunteers who come together to help adultswith literacy difficulties in a confidential setting. Tutors come from a widerange of backgrounds, and meet a learner for an average of 2 hours per week .Teaching qualifications are not needed, as full training is organised for allvolunteers, before you start and on an ongoing basis. It can be extremely rewarding to help an adult to catch up on skills they missedwhile growing up. Sometimes this means helping someone to read the paper, read a bus timetable or write Christmas cards. Sometimes it might includepreparing them to help with children’s homework. It can be very powerful tohelp someone with these core life skills and to see the difference it can make.If you have a high standard of English, are a good communicator and goodwith people, and you feel able to work in a confidential setting, this might befor you. Good organisational skills and basic computer skills are an advantage. All volunteers are Garda vetted. If you would like to find out more, phone Maggie O’Sullivan Graham on 0646642728 or email [email protected] next tutor training programme starts in February 2014, and we will beinterviewing volunteers for places during January. We would love to hear fromyou.

I must admit that at least for me, Christmas and into the NewYear was a whirlwind of social events. Starting with Christmasdinner followed by a family reunion party plus several dinners. The end result was that I spent a lot of time in the smallest room inour house sitting down and contemplating my past and future andfeeling very ill. Whether that was from too much to eat or drink orsome bug I picked up the beginning and the end, if you willpardon the pun, was the same. Now that I am back to my old selfagain now, I think of the times while I sat on the throne thinkinghow thoughtless I had been to someone who had gone to a lot oftrouble to be kind to me.A gentleman came into the shop a while back and asked me if I

had read ‘The Compleat Angler’ by Izaak Walton (for those of youwho may not know this was the first book on rod fishing everprinted and appeared from the presses of AT Maxey of St.Dunstan's Church Yard, Fleet Street, London 1653 and, thoughreprinted several times, copies are very rare). I answered that yes Ihad seen a copy once but had never read or owned one. Well, hesaid, I owned one years ago and my daughter really loved it andasked me if I would give it to her which I did (again for yourinformation it is not just a book on angling but is full of hints, poems and homilies). Now many years later she is married andliving in Scotland. A short while ago I visited her and noticed ‘TheCompleat Angler’, though small in size, had prize of place in herbook shelf. I suggested she might like to give it back as I hadsomeone in mind who would love it but the answer was definitely

not. A few days later in Glasgow with a bit of time on my hands Ideceived to visit a few book shops and ‘Lo and Behold’ in one ofthem I found a reprint of the book with a dedication to George R,and what looks like ‘Bowie 1923’. And, he said quietly, I have ithere, producing the book and handing it to me. I examined it, nodoubt it was in lovely condition. Gosh, I said, you were lucky tofind this volume to replace the one you gave your daughter.Actually, he said, I enjoy your little articles in The Kenmare Newsso this book is a present to you. I was shocked, surprised, gobsmacked, I am useless for knowing people though everyone seemsto know me. What his name is, who he was, have I met him sincewith no acknowledgement I do not know, embarrassment hasprevented me from mentioning the whole episode until now. All Isaid to him as he left was a feeble thank you. Just like his daughterI also would not part with ‘The Compleat Angler’ and I owe thatgentleman a debt of gratitude for his kindness in thinking of meand his time and effort in seeking out something that I alwayswanted. I have a library of fishing books but just two have pride ofplace ‘The Compleat Angler or The Contemplative Man’sRecreation’, by Izaak Walton and ‘Aman can fish’, by T.C.Kingsmall Moore. Again, apologies and thanks.

It is with great disappointment that local salmon anglers havediscovered that The Roughty River will have brown as well asblue tags to control salmon catches this year. A river which wasdocumented as the most prolific spawning river in europe in timespast has now had this regime of control introduced for to protectwhat few salmon are left. Will we see the salmon disappear likethe grouse and snipe? By the look of things yes. The reason?Human activities! The Roughty now joins the Sheen, anotherwonderful salmon river, the Blackwater the same, Finnihy,Cloonee and Owenshagh as rivers at, or indeed below, sustainablesalmon number. Appealing over the years to peoples betterinstincts and trying to stop them from damaging fish stocks hasnot worked. Where can you go from here? I have been disliked forsaying a fish in the river caught and returned by a tourist angler isworth hundreds of euro more to our local economy then the samefish served up for dinner. The future of our local rivers are in ourhands. God help us.

Kenmare News | 9Local vet warning to all dog owners, ‘dogsare dying suddenly in our area (still)’

“In November I wrote about a marked increase of ‘sudden’ deaths of dogsin the greater Kenmare area. Sadly enough this is still the case.In the last months we are confronted with a significant increase of ownersreporting dogs practically dying overnight. We have carried out severaltests and post-mortem examinations and we can come to the conclusionthat a few conditions are responsible for these deaths;Viruses; we found Parvo virus and Leptospirosis (Weill's disease/rat urinedisease) responsible for a large part of dying and/or very sick dogsPoison; especially Trodax injected into meat, spread as bait for foxesObviously we all want to avoid our pet or working dog to die. There a few practical things that can be done.;Viruses; correct vaccinated dogs will not get sick or die from either Parvovirus or leptospirosis. I am always surprised by the amount of owners whonot vaccinate their dogs. I am not sure if it is because the facts and risksare unknown or if it is about the expense. In any case vaccination is by farthe cheapest and most effective way to prevent your dog getting sick ordying from many viruses. The more dogs are vaccinated in anygeographical area, the less reservoir is left for the disease and this willsubsequently reduce the mortalities in dogs.Poison; Obviously no one plans his dog to be poisoned, but we see ithappen a lot. In nearly all cases of poison it concerns dogs that are able to‘roam’ around. The most sensible step in avoiding poisoning is to makesure the dog is always in a secure area or under control. On the other side Ithink that spreading poison is per definition a wrong thing to do. In certaincircumstances it could be an option in the control of predators, but thenused under controlled and sensible circumstances. In order to promote dog vaccination we are extending our offer of two fullvaccines for the price of one. The offer includes a consult with healthcheck and two ‘7 in 1’ vaccines given 3 weeks apart for a total price of38. This offer will only run until January 31st 2014. We sincerely hopethat this will reduce the amount of sudden and unnecessary death dogs! Please call our centre for further information or to make an appointmenton 064 6642695.”Henk Offereins, DVM, MVScKenmare Veterinary Centre

Success in retaining Court Houses.I was glad to have led the successful campaign which retained 3 out of 4of the Court houses under review for closure in Kerry, gladly Kenmare,Cahirciveen and Dingle Court Houses will be operational for theforeseeable future, unfortunately Killorglin Court House will more thanlikely close. It is important that Court Houses in local towns are retained Ihave seen first hand how beneficial they are to local communities, localGardai and the legal profession from my time working as a Solicitorbefore I became a County Councillor and as the current Chairperson ofKerry Joint Policing Committee. There were 3 submissions to the Courtservice the other two were from the Kerry Law Society and LocalSolicitors I also contacted the Justice Minister Alan Shatter TD in relationto their retention.

Substantial Roads funding: Sneem/Tahilla & Castlecove. The area that received the most roads funding in 2014 in Kerry was theCaherdaniel/ Sneem area. This is clearly visible from the roads list forKerry. The Minister for Transport LeoVaradkar TD and The NationalRoads Authority announced in late December funding for NationalSecondary routes; roads in our area include:Castlecove 950,000. Sneem Village 800,000. Tahilla 125,000 andKenmare to Killarney (Looscaunagh) 750,000. Further roads allocationsare to be announced shortly.

Private Housing Grants.Kerry County Council has this year received extra funding from theDepartment of Environment, Community & Local Government for Grantsfor older people and people with a disability or mobility issues. MinisterJan O’Sullivan announced an extra 11% funding. Kerry County Councilwill receive 1.43 million and the Council will have to provide an extra20% from their own resources on top of the allocation given. If peoplewould like further information feel free to contact me or alternatively givethe Council a call on 066 7183500.

Kenmare Tidy Towns: County Councillorsallocation.I recently gave allocation for a few projects. I will give further allocationagain shortly to Kenmare Tidy Towns and other Villages and areas in ourlocality.

Sports Capital Grants. The Department of Transport, Tourism & Sport are accepting applicationsfrom sports clubs for sports capital grants, such grants are of great benefitto sports clubs; I encourage Clubs in our locality to have a look at theDepartments web site and apply for funding.

Kenmare Eastern Relief Road.I was informed by Kerry County Council Engineers that the new road willnot be open until the Spring Time. They along with the National RoadsAuthority are committed to the project and are confident of receivingfurther funding to complete the road

Monthly motions.Dangerous bend on Bonane road. That Kerry County Council consults with the National RoadsAuthority/Department of Transport and requests that funding is providedto make the road safer near the turn on the N71 Bonane road atGortnadullagh, Kenmare, there have been numerous serious accidents atthis location and a fatality in 2007.

Flooding/ Costal erosion. What measures are Kerry County Council doing to assist people living incostal locations that are in danger of flooding? Has the Council applied forfunding from Government Departments and the EU. I will be speaking atthe Council meeting about various areas around Kerry however I will domy utmost to seek funding for places in our locality damaged by therecent storms for example Coss Strand, Templenoe, Killmacallogue,Lauragh and Rossdohan and Sneem.

Agricultural payments.I welcome the new rural area stimulus package worth over 4bn to Irelandover 7 years. There are new schemes for farmers starting in 2015 such asthe GLAS scheme formerly REPS. I am hopeful that many farmers in ourarea will receive the maximum payment of 7000, extra grants for youngfarmers, retention of the disadvantaged areas fund, and 80 for sucklercows. However currently some farmers are facing difficulties in claimingall their entitlements due to grounds being deemed ineligible by EURegulations. I will continue to lobby TDs to seek changes to theseEuropean regulations

Kerry County Council Budget 2014:Commercial rates. There will be no increase in commercial rates in 2014. The annual Rate ofValuation will remain at 80.35. Although there has not been any increasein Rates in recent years, businesses have to cope with huge hikes inelectricity, oil and gas. As the economy improves the Council shouldreduce rates.

Council rents not to increase.Due to pressure from Councillors Kerry County Council have decided notto pass on the cost of the property tax to Council tenants, the proposed 2per week increase will not now have to be paid.

Area meeting motions. The next County Council area meeting for the South and West area willtake place on 28th February next, if people would like for me to raise anyissues at the meeting please let me know before 14 February.

TDs advice and assistance.Brendan Griffin TD holds monthly clinics in the area he can be contactedon 066 652884. Minister Jimmy Deenihan TD is regularly in the area andhis office can be contacted on 068 57446.

Your Local Councillor.Always available at 5 Main Street, or I can meet people after work mostevenings in the Kenmare, Kilgarvan, Lauragh, Tuosist, Bonane,Templenoe, Blackwater and Sneem area’s. I hold Clinics in mid Kerry andparts of the Ring of Kerry every month.

He's A Fireman. He puts it all on the line when the bell rings.A fireman is at once the most fortunate and least fortunate of men. He's a man who savours life because he has seen too much death. He's a gentle man because he has seen too much of the awesome power ofviolent forces out of control. He's a man responsive to a child's laughter, because his arms have heldtoo many small bodies that will never laugh again. He's a man who appreciates the simple pleasures of life, hot coffee held innumbed unbending fingers, the flush of fresh air pumping through smokeand fire convulsed lungs, a warm bed for bone and body compelledbeyond feeling. The camaraderie of brave men, The divine peace ofselfness service and a job done well in the name of all men.He doesn't wear buttons or wave a flag or shout obscenities and when hemarches it is to honour a fallen comrade. He doesn't preach the brotherhood of man.He lives it.

Minster to take upArd Bhearna SafetyConcernsMinister Jan O'Sullivanoutlined her concern forthe safety issues at ArdBhearna estate and hasagreed to take up thisissue. While there is nolegal requirement on the council, there is serious concern that there is nofootpath and street lighting between the estate and the town. Best practicehas always been that the safety of the children and other residents shouldalways be paramount. I will continue to work on this issue.

Street Trading Court Hearing on February 7thThere is a proposal by the council that 38 parking spaces be handed overto street traders 6 days a week from 8am and 7pm from McSweeneyscorner to the Market House. The council currently have no plans to findreplacement parking spaces for the customers of the rate paying premisesin the town. If this proposal goes ahead it will be detrimental to all thelocal businesses.

All citizens in Kerry to be given vote in proposed SeanadreformsThe Fianna Fáil Bill seeking to introduce immediate reforms to SeanadÉireann, which would give all citizens in Kerry a vote in Seanad electionsshould be accepted by the Government. The aim of the Seanad Reform Bill2014 is to strengthen the powers of the upper house to act as a check ongovernment and scrutinise national and EU legislation on behalf of thepeople. We cannot let the Government continue to ignore the very cleardemands from the public for real changes in our political system. Thegovernment promised a ‘democratic revolution’ this government has usedits unprecedented majority to ruthlessly guillotine bills, abolish towncouncils in Kerry and seek to further centralise powers into fewer hands byabolishing the Seanad. The Government also cynically abolished electionsto Údarás na Gaeltachta in favour of political appointments. This Bill provides a legislative route to achieving proper reform of SeanadÉireann without further delay. It opens the Seanad up to every voter inKerry; it gives voting rights to the Irish diaspora and eligible NorthernIrish citizens; it earmarks seats for minority groups; it moves towardsgender equality and it curbs spending on campaigns. With the political will,we can make all these changes within a matter of weeks. By voting for thisBill, we could immediately end the "political elitism" that the Governmentclaimed to oppose during the referendum, by giving all citizens in Kerry asay in who represents them in the upper house.

RoadworksI welcome the funding from the NRA, which I lobbied strongly forover the last 12 months. The works will be carried out in 2014.Funds totalling over 2.3 million will involve road repairs on theRing of Kerry road, a section at Coad – Castlecove, Sneem –Drimnabeg, Carhan-Caherciveen and at Muckross, Killarney andLooscaunagh. Also, the long awaited road improvements will becarried out at Kilderry Bends and road surfacing in Milltownvillage. Repairs will also be carried out on the Castlemaine toMilltown road and Killarney to Rathmore road at Gortanahaneboy.

GratitudeWe are all very thankful and grateful to people who had to workover the Christmas period – the council, Eircom, ESB, Gardai, FireService personnel– to ensure that the roads were kept clear and thatvital services were kept going during the atrocious weatherconditions over Christmas. Without their work many homes wouldhave been left without lights and phones and roads would havebeen impassable. Thanks again to all involved.

Single Farm PaymentsMany farmers in our area are continuing to suffer financially due tothe fact that lands that were eligible for payment in the past havenow been taken out. I would strongly urge affected farmers toappeal decisions taken by the Department as in many instances, following on from ground inspections, less ground is deemedineligible than what was originally proposed. Farmers are beingpenalised unnecessarily in many instances.

Flood DamageMuch of our coastal areas were ravaged during the recent high tidesand storms. I have called on the Government to secure EUsolidarity funding and the response from Europe to this request ispositive. There is a major problem in that these funds, oncesecured, will only be allowed to be used by public bodies in publicareas. Property owners with private lands are finding themselvesin the position of relying on insurance companies and in many

cases disputes are already arising over liability to pay.

Irish Water debacleThe Government have made another fine mess with Irish Water byallowing them to waste 50 million on devising methods to billcustomers when all of this information would be readily availablefrom other bodies such as Airtricity.

Red CrossI am delighted that the hardworking service – The Kerry Red Cross– has been nominated as one of the official charities for the Ring ofKerry cycle 2014. The Red Cross has served our communities verywell back over the decades and the volunteers who give vastamounts of their time free of charge are to be commended andthanked.

Another year is upon us and hopefully it will be a good one for us alland for our furry and friends. The winter can be very harsh on theanimals, so please ensure they have good shelter and plenty of food so thatthey can keep warm. If you see your animal is not well in any way, pleaseseek medical advice quickly. Often by leaving it 2 or 3 days means theunnecessary death of the animals, early medical intervention can often bethe difference between life and death. Our animals only have us to act forthem, so we need to be vigilant and help them whenever they need usFor some reason there are often false reports that KLAWS stealanimals to sell for profit. I would like to put on record now that weNEVER sell an animal. Every cat that comes through our door costs us ATLEAST 100 euros before it leaves, with vaccinations and neutering. Ifthey stay with us, we have the extra cost of board and feeding. A dog willbe at least double that figure. If people take an animal from us, we ask fora donation to put towards these costs as we only receive money throughfundraising and we feel if someone takes a vaccinated, neutered animalthat is is fair that they donate. We are always inundated with cats and dogsand our funding is extremely low, we would love for the numbers todwindling and this is why we constantly neuter animals so in the long-term this may be the eventual outcome. If we were to profit from sellingon animals we would not have neutering as our main policy as anunneutered dog is much more valuable. We do not allow any animal to berehomed without being neutered, unless it is too young to do so and in thiscase, our policy is that the animal comes back as soon as it is old enoughto be done. Please rest assured KLAWS would not steal an animal, if adog or cat is found or handed in to us, we advertise for the owners andthen if no one shows, we then work on homing themWe would like to thank Liz O'Sullivan and her Students and parentsat Lauragh school for the donation from the raffle tickets beforeChristmas-Liz is always so great and does a huge amount in educating onanimal care and welfare. She is a true legend.

Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr ! not a happy thought. Rain, wind, rain, wind, ice, rain, cold, rain, sleet, wind, hail, but somewhere in there, there could be aglimpse of sunshine….and that glimpse is all we need to encourage us inthe belief that spring is just around the corner. February is still really partof winter but the lengthening days begins to compensate for any extracold spell and it tends not to last for too long. Luckily enough most ofJanuary is gone and even though its been wet and stormy there hasn’t beenmuch cold weather …yet !So, out to the garden…1. First job will be to tidy up after all those storms. Leaf fall in the

autumn was very late and there are still rotting leaves scattered allaround the garden so do a good clean up of twigs, branches and soggyleaves. Rake the beds and give the pathways a good brushing.

2. Pruning of damaged trees and shrubs maybe necessary to preventfurther damage or to reshape their battered framework of branches.Clean cuts from pruning will heal over better than torn or brokenwounds.

3. Herbaceous plants that were slow to die back in the autumn should allbe tidied up with last year’s stalks and dried leaves removed so thatonce this year’s growth starts it can emerge without hindrance. The oldleaves can often provide a heaven for slugs , so by removing thesedecaying leaves it also reduces the risk of slug attack later.

4. Remove any fallen leaves that have got stuck in the small alpines inrockeries and heather beds.

5. Spring flowering bulbs are making progress above ground so becareful you don’t damage these tender growing shoots when tidyingup.

6. The lawn might be a mess at the moment but it’s so wet at the momentthe best thing is to stay off it ! but the first chance of dry ground, give

it a good raking to remove the rubbish ! By the second half of Februaryyou can start spreading some fertilizer if the weather is mild.

7. Pots, patio containers and window boxed need not remain empty orunwanted at this time of year. Primroses, Mini Cyclamen and thespring flowering bulbs can all be used to add colour around the house. The heavy rain has caused damage to some of these plants over the lastfew weeks but they will make a comeback as the sunshine breaksthrough. Winter Heather can also be used in these containers and willnot be effected by any winter weather…indestructible ! Evergreenshrubs and trailing ivies can be added to the arrangement for contrastand structure. Keep the containers raised slightly from the paving orconcrete as this will encourage drainage from the pot, the plants willprefer it and there is less risk of frost damage to the pot if there is adryer compost within it.

8. The vege garden at the moment could have a future for growing rice asits so wet but soon the tide will go out and it will be time for planting.Good positive thoughts for January !. Keep it clean and tidy aspossible. Scatter some well rotted farm yard manure or seaweed overthe ground and leave it alone until March. By then it should havebroken down a bit and the soil might be dry enough to turn over, mixing the organic material into the ground. And in the mean time theseed potatoes will soon be in the garden centres and you will be able tostart sprouting them as well as sowing various seeds in seed trays inthe house ready for early planting…but no rush yet. Just be thinkingabout it and see what seeds are in the shops over the coming weeks.Garlic and onion sets will be the first to be planted outside. If you havea polythene tunnel other sowings can take place by the beginning ofFebruary.

9. Fruit trees and bushes can be pruned back by the end of February andnew additions can be added. A lot of the soft fruit varieties areavailable as bare roots plants in early spring so keep a look out forthese and avail of the cheaper prices.

10. ..And lastly there should always be time for a cuppa ! …..sit back andread the latest in the Kenmare News…what’s that I see about a‘Weekend in Kenmare’?

Until next month, Happy Gardening ! Simon

On Tuesday the 10th of December,Kenmare’s Pobailscoil Inbhear Scéinewent head-to-head with Rathhmore’sPobalscoil Sliabh Luachra in the JoeO’ Connor Cup. The match took placein Dr. Crokes GAA grounds inKillarney. The Kenmare team trottedonto the pitch captained by PatSpillane and were followed by dedicated Bainisteoir’s Tom O’ Connor,Seánie O’ Shea, Dan Cahalane and Tommy O’ Sullivan. They were alsojoined by their loyal Maor Uisce, Stephen O’ Sullivan, who counselled andmotivated his classmates from the side line. The game kicked off in teeming weather conditions and the openingminutes of the game were to Rathmore’s advantage. However, Pat Spillanewas quick to retaliate and opened the score sheet on Kenmare’s behalf witha flawless point. It was a rollercoaster of a game with Rathmore leading, only to be met by some immaculate goal scores by Kenmare. The battlepersisted with Inbhear Scéine leading at the end of the first half, 2-04 to 1-05.The team entered the pitch once again, with high expectations regarding

the second half but these expectations were soon met by the strongoffensive opposition of Rathmore. Rathmore continued to secure pointafter point, with scores almost non-existent on behalf of Kenmare. Heartswere racing, amongst both the players and supporters in the stand, asRathmore drew the score level to 1-09 to 2-06. The anticipation wasbuilding amongst the crowd as the game was coming to a close. In the dying minutes of the game, Kenmare fought for the ball, lobbed

it in in front of the posts for it to be punched over the bar by Cathal

Granville. Hearts suddenly stopped, however, when Sliabh Luachra wereawarded a free kick on the opposite wing of the pitch. Breaths were held asRathmore’s Dean Fitzgerald took what would be the make-or-break kick ofthe game. Sighs of relief were to be heard among the Kenmare supportersas they watched the ball fall wide. Goalkeeper Ray O’ Shea wasn’t goingto waste time as he fed the ball out to his forward line. The opposinggoalkeeper dashed out, in attempts to lessen the damage caused byKenmare, only to be devastatingly mistaken, as the ball was once again inthe possession of Cathal Granville who hit the ball off the back of the net –leaving the final score of the match, 3-07 to 1-09.

Senior Men Game 10 QPR 2:2 Inter KenmareOn Sunday 5th January Inter Kenmare's senior team shook of the festivetorpor and headed off to Mastergeeha to take on table toppers QPR in adivision 1A league fixture. A bitter, driving wind gusted across the pitchperhaps favouring QPR in the first half and both teams exhibited signs ofrustiness as they struggled for fluency in an evenly contested first half.Inter’s defence of Tom O’Sullivan, Donal O’Sullivan, Shannon Ryan andEoin Finnegan dealt well with whatever QPR could throw at them.Without playing to the standards they had managed in the run of gamesleading up to Christmas Inter were competing well in midfield where DanCahalane, Josh Crowley Holland and Stephen O’Shea were prominent. The front three of Matthias Zoeller, Sean Murphy and Killian Harringtonexerted prolonged pressure on QPR’s defence but the team at the topshowed why they were there with some resilient defensive work. Interwere shading the match without without seriously threatening QPR'skeeper. However, a speculative hoof forward from QPR found their strikerseveral yards behind the Inter rear-guard and he took his moment wellleaving Kenmare a goal down. The faded half way line saved the Referee’sblushes as he claimed not to know which half the QPR player was in!Despite a determined rally in the second half Inter found themselves 2 nildown after some good inter play by QPR on their left. Gary Cassidy, between the sticks for Inter, was called on to make some fine savesproving what a good shot stopper he is. Inter shuffled their pack and thesubs who entered the fray helped turn the tide in Inters favour. Unboundby the two nil deficit Inter ripped into their opponents in the final twentyminutes and finally produced their best football of the game. First Stephen

O’Shea smashed the ball into the roof of the net from close range aftersome excellent work down the left from Thomas O’Sullivan and DerdieO’Sullivan. The equaliser came from the toe of super sub Alan MurphyReeve with almost the last kick off the game. The Gneeveguilla lads wereleft shell shocked at the final whistle with much head shaking. It is atestament to all 14 players who took part on the day that Inter deservedlycame home with a share of the spoils and kept alive their bid to promotefrom division 1A at the first time of asking.Report by John Holland

U-11's Listowel 4:2 Inter KenmareInter travelled to Listowel after the Christmas break and lost out to astrong Listowel side. The home side went 2 up after 10 minutes and after aslow start Inter started to play with Corey Murphy, Aodhan MacGearailtand Caleb Brosnan all going close to scoring but it was the home side whoscored again to go in at half time 3-0 up. Inter got off to the worst possiblestart in the second half conceding a penalty, Daniel Gaine made a greatsave but they scrambled home the rebound. Mark Torpey scored a greatgoal after some good play from Tadgh O'Donoghue and Patrick Bisogno. It was all one way traffic as Inter pushed forward and Mark Casey slottedhome to make it 4-2, we had a few chances late on with Jamie O'Regangoing close but time was against us and it finished 4-2.Report by John Granville

Dreaming of a newcar? Kenmare CreditUnion has launched its2014 New Year carloan campaign. Thecampaign highlightsthe 9.4%APR* loanrate available tomembers at the creditunion. While the last couple ofyears have proven to be verytight in terms of consumerspending, according to the Society of the Irish MotorIndustry (SIMI) new car sales rose in October 2013while they decreased in November. Car sales in July,August and September were boosted by theintroduction of the half-year registration system. Tothe end of November 2013, Volkswagen was the topselling brand followed by Toyota and Ford. TheVolkswagen Golf was the best-selling car, followedby the Nissan Qashqai and Ford Focus with silverbeing the most popular car colour. In the current climate, it can be difficult to get creditfor the things in life we need – that is why the creditunion is on hand to help. As we look forward to theNew Year and the 141 registration period in new carsales, a car loan from Kenmare Credit Union isstraight-forward. You borrow the money from thecredit union, you pay for the car and you own the carimmediately. You agree a repayment schedule withthe credit union. Interest is charged on the reducingbalance of the loan.Unlike many car finance deals available today, whichare actually Hire Purchase Agreements, arrangingyour car loan through Kenmare Credit Union meansthat you own the car from the outset - You do not ownthe car through a Hire Purchase Agreement until thelast instalment. Nor are there any balloon payments, admin charges or hidden fees. A car loan withKenmare Credit Union is just that - a loan, nogimmicks and fully transparent.Should you be in the happy position of being able

to repay the loan early, you may do so without anypenalty charges with your credit union.Commenting on the launch of the car loan campaignMichael Gavin, Manager said, “People in theKenmare area are still buying cars but are shopping

around for better value in the car financing deal.Kenmare Credit Union is lending to its members andwe would encourage anyone who is consideringbuying a new or used car in 2014 to visit their localcredit union to discuss what options are available tothem."He continued, “Having arranged finance with thecredit union in advance of going shopping for a carputs you in a stronger position. It helps to knowexactly how much you have to spend and because youare not going cap-in-hand to the dealer, you areeffectively a cash buyer and you may be able tonegotiate a better deal."

What makes a car loan different at KenmareCredit Union?Unlike a Hire Purchase Agreement you own the carfrom the outset. There are no hidden fees, admin charges, transactioncharges, set up costs orballoon payments. The interest you pay on acredit union loan is the fullcost of the loan so it is fullytransparent.Credit union interest ratesare fair and reasonable andcapped by law.Repayments are calculatedon your reducing balance, soyou pay less interest witheach repayment.Your credit union loan isinsured in the event of your

death - subject to terms and conditions - at no directcost to you. Other lenders charge for this. You can pay off your loan early, make additionallump sum repayments or increase your regularrepayments, without a penalty. Other lenders maycharge you extra for paying them back faster!*Cost of FinanceFor a €10,000 3 year variable interest rate loan, withmonthly repayments of €318, at an APR of 9.4 %;the total amount payable by the member will be€11,448.

Over the last few years the Kenmare Chronicle hasbeen assimilating a catalogue of old photographsand documents that record the social andcommercial history of the town and the surroundingarea. A Weekend in Kenmare are now planning amodern day study of the town by collectingphotographs capturing Kenmare, for a moment intime, over a weekend in May 2014 – and need yourhelp.

100 years ago there were very few privately ownedcameras, therefore only a limited number ofphotographs from this time exist. Since then thenumbers of cameras has increased to the extent thatnearly everyone today has a camera of some type, even if it’s on their mobile phone. However, in tenyears time where will these photos be? How manypeople actually print their photographs and howmany languish on computers or memory sticks? Soironically, even though the number of cameras hasincreased, we could be faced with fewer picturessurviving than 100 years ago. It is hoped that a projectlike A Weekend in Kenmare will demonstrate theimportance of cherishing and documenting theseevery day pictures.

By encouraging as many people as possible toparticipate in this project, amateur or professional, togo out and take photographs over the weekend it ishoped that a visual diary of Kenmare will be created. The weekend starts at 12:01am on Friday 9th May andruns until 11:59pm on Sunday 11th May. Pictures canbe of people, places, events, flora and fauna – thechoice is yours. There is a juvenile section as well, toencourage budding photographers. Pictures shouldbe emailed to HYPERLINK"mailto:[email protected]"[email protected] along with a title, briefdescription, location, your name and your age ifunder 18, by 5pm on Friday 16th May. A judging panelwill select 100 pictures to be included in the book, AWeekend in Kenmare, that will be published in thesummer – and to provide extra encouragement therewill be a range of prizes awarded for the top 10.

Over the weekend there will be exhibitions andworkshops led by local professionalphotographers. More information as it becomes

available will be posted on our website HYPERLINK"http://www.weekendinkenmare.com"www.weekendinkenmare.com or follow us onFacebook.

This project and competition is open to everyone soput the date in your diary and we will see you for aWeekend in Kenmare.

Four monthly competitions will be held in the run upto the main weekend. For the month of January thechosen subject is, Kenmare Bridges. There are manybridges, large and small, around Kenmare so getsnapping and email your pictures before the end ofthe month to [email protected] alongwith a suitable caption, date and location. Februarycompetition subject is Siblings. March and April to beannounced. Pictures will be posted on Facebook andwebsite and winning entry will receive a framed 12 x 8inch copy of their print.
