Notes from the

Pastor’s Pen . . . Every month I procrastinate until almost the last possible minute to get a newsletter article done. I sometimes wonder if Judy will just send the newsletter without my article! She reminds me more than once that she needs the article. I think I do this because I never know what to write. That is still true this month, but God always seems to provide. It’s either that or I just start typing and ramble. I’m going with God! You’ll find elsewhere in this newsletter pictures of the fire from 1938. While I was searching the archives for pictures, I found some old newsletters. It’s fun to go through them and see names of people I know and the activities each were involved in. There were many different groups that are no longer around. The times of services have changed several times. Different worship services were tried. The point I’m trying to make is that we have changed, and we are still changing. I know the church is changing, and even in the articles from the pastors in the 70’s and 80’s, that opinion was voiced. But what doesn’t change is God. God still calls us to love one another and to reach out to those in our community who are desperately in need of knowing the God we love. One of the ways we can be involved in our community is to support social justice initiatives. Below you will find two statements on social issues from the Presbyterian Church and Methodist Church. They both speak to loving our neighbor and being active to help create the needed change in our society. The General Assembly “affirms its conviction that neither the Church as the body of Christ, nor Christians as individuals, can be neutral or indifferent toward evil in the world; affirms its responsibility to speak on social and moral issues for the encouragement and instruction of the Church and its members, seeking earnestly both to know the mind of Christ and to speak always in humility and love; reminds the churches that their duty is not only to encourage and train their members in daily

Pastor’s Notes (Cont.) obedience to God’s will, but corporately to reveal God’s grace in places of suffering and need, to resist the forces that tyrannize, and to support the forces that restore the dignity of all men as the children of God, for only so is the gospel most fully proclaimed; . . .” (1958 Statement – PC(USA), p. 537).

"Taking an active stance in society is nothing new for followers of John Wesley. He set the example for us to combine personal and social piety. Ever since predecessor churches to United Methodism flourished in the United States, we have been known as a denomination involved with people's lives, with political and social struggles, having local to international mission implications. Such involvement is an expression of the personal change we experience in our baptism and conversion. The United Methodist Church believes God's love for the world is an active and engaged love, a love seeking justice and liberty. We cannot just be observers. So, we care enough about people's lives to risk interpreting God's love, to take a stand, to call each of us into a response, no matter how controversial or complex. The church helps us think and act out a faith perspective, not just responding to all the other 'mind-makers-up' that exist in our society." Excerpt from The Book of Resolutions of The United Methodist Church 2016.

Having said all this, my hope is that we will form a social justice group that will provide a voice from this church against the evils of the world. If you’d like to join me in this endeavor, I encourage you to email me at [email protected] or call the Church Office. We’ll schedule a meeting in the coming weeks. I’m looking forward to the summer and warm weather. But, I’ll still look for you in church! Pastor Vonda

Church Van Driver(s)

Needed Some of our members living in Canterbury Park and Canterbury Inn have expressed an interest in van transportation to the church on Sundays. We are looking for a van driver for one or both services on Sundays. We would also like someone to provide van transportation for our new monthly evening service on the last Sunday of the month. If you could help one Sunday, two, or all Sundays, please let the Church Office know. You will need to undergo a background check and a volunteer driver’s application check.

“Table Talks” to Continue The Conference has been holding “Table Talks” around the area for the past several months. There will be a District “Table Talks” here on Sunday, June 3. Our church’s Worship Team would like to continue having conversations about issues that affect our world. We will be holding two “Table Talks” during the summer:

Sunday, July 8 5:30 p.m.

and

Sunday, August 5

5:30 p.m. In July we’ll be having a baked potato bar. The church will provide the potatoes, and we’ll have a sign-up sheet for all the goodies that go in the potatoes. We’re also asking for people to sign-up and let us know if they are coming. We want to provide enough potatoes! We’ll enjoy a meal together, and questions will be provided to get the ball rolling for your table conversations. Is there a particular issue you’d like to talk about? If so, let Pastor Vonda know. We are providing a safe space to have those difficult conversations. All are welcome, so invite your family and friends to join us.

The best way to cheer yourself up is to try to cheer somebody else up.
