  • Keith Haring was one of the most influential visual artists of the late 20th century. He wanted to bring art to everyone and started drawing on subway walls.

  • He was part of the Hip Hop scene in New York.

  • His bold cartoon like images are icons of American art and popular culture.

  • Keith Haring was a gay man.

  • After Haring was diagnosed with AIDS in the late 80s he used his imagery to promote AIDS awareness and donated art to raise money for AIDS research. The poster above is called Ignorance = Fear. Keith Haring was one of the most influential visual artists of the late 20th century. He wanted to bring art to everyone and started drawing on the subway. He was part of a Hip Hop scene in New York.   • This poster is called Silence = Death. It was painted in 1989. The pink triangle was the symbol that gay men were forced to wear in the concentration camps of Nazi Germany.

  • In pairs: Discuss how you think his sexual orientation and his disability have influenced his artwork.

  • Design and construct your own paper Keith Haring style sculpture.

    First you are going to do some quick sketches of each other doing action poses.

    Then you are going to transfer these onto coloured paper and make a sculpture.
