ExpAND yOUR JEWISH HORIZONS WITH K.I. ADULT ED CLASSES (ALL MEET AT K.I. - NO pREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE REqUIRED)Tuesdays - How to Find God in prayer 6-7:15 pm, 11/13-1/15 $15 includes class materials & a deli dinner for all sessions or $5/session. RSVP by Friday, Nov. 16 to the office for entire series or the Friday before individual sessions. An exploration of the meaning of the Amidah (the 19 blessings) which is said three times a day. Looking for meaning in your prayers? Do you feel your prayers are answered? Are you getting any satisfaction from your prayer experience? Do you want to find God before God finds you? Would you like to “friend” God? No prior knowledge is required! For questions contact Dan Kass. Two sections where indicated: One for men and women 20-40 / One for men and women 40 & aboveCourse Description:Nov 13 - Session I: (Joint class) Why do we pray? What are we looking for in our Judaism? Are you looking for spirituality? How do you pray? We will attempt to answer these questions and more while beginning to explore our prayers. Rabbi Grussgott and David Cohavi are your facilitators as we start understanding the Amidah. Further classes will explore other parts of the daily services.Nov 27 - Session II: (Two separate sections) We’ll examine the first half of the Amidah service. Assume you are one of our greatest rabbis of our times, we will look at each of the blessings to see what they mean as we read the translation from two prayer books. For each of these sections, we’ll “elect” a secretary to write down the main ideas of this session to be used later in the class.Dec 4 - Session III: (Two separate sections) We’ll examine the second half of the Amidah. We’ll continue with exploring the prayers in the Amidah using the translations.Dec 11 - Session IV: (Two separate sections) We’ll take our notes from the previous sessions and compare them to the commentary. In other words, we’ll see how we stack up to the commentary of the Rabbis. Dec 18 - Session V: (Joint class) To reconcile our thoughts vs. what we have learned from the commentary, we will meet with Rabbi Moshe Grussgott, Rabbi Herbert Mandl, and Rabbi Shaya Katz from KC Kollel for an opportunity to ask a true rabbinic scholar about the meaning of the Amidah prayers.Jan 8 - Session VI: (Joint class) Jesse Newman will give a historical background to prayer: Why did the Jews make the world great? This very small population will impact every continent on this planet with our laws and education. By understanding our history, we can gain an insight into our liturgy.Jan 15 - Session VII: (Joint class) David Cohavi will talk to us about praying with kavanah. What is praying with kavanah? We will further explore consciousness and selected prayers and meditations.
