Keeping Up With Kappa Hi there, I would like to start off by introducing myself! I am Mattie Smyth, a senior here at Creighton and the Eta Iota President for 2016. I am honored to be repre- senting all of the extraordinary women at the Eta Iota chapter and am doing my best to serve them and the Fraternity to the best of my abilities. Kappa Kappa Gamma is much more than just a sorority. It is a place to call home, where friendship and laughter are around every corner, and a place we can truly be ourselves. The bonds of sisterhood shared in Eta Iota have left an everlasting impact on me. We value the differences that each individual brings to create our unique sisterhood. Kappas are campus leaders, schol- ars, and dedicated members of the global community. By becoming a Kappa, the best version of yourself is revealed. Every day I am inspired by these intelligent, passionate, and loyal women who exemplify exactly what it means to be a Kappa. This semester was an incredible one. From recruitment to initiation, sisterhood events to social events, and Bid Day to Senior Night, we continuously laughed, cried, and shared in our beautiful ritual. Looking forward, we have many exciting events and opportunities for growth that we are eagerly awaiting. This June we have 6 active members attending the national convention in San Di- ego, CA. We are excited for them to share the knowl- edge they learn with the chapter next fall. While all of the women at Eta Iota are extremely busy balancing their academics, commitments to the Frater- nity, countless extracurricular interests, and family time, I can assure you that we all still have time to keep our sisterhood alive. While I am most definitely biased, I can assure you that the Kappas on campus are the spunki- est, balanced, and most loyal women around. Whether you are reading this as a parent of an active or as an alumna, I can guarantee that you would be very proud to be parents and sisters to every single woman in our chapter. I am truly grateful that this organization has given me the opportunity to know all 142 of these in- spirational women. I would like to thank all the parents for raising such honorable daughters and I would like to thank all the alumnae for being the admirable women that we look up to so much. Keeping Up With Kappa

Hi there, I would like to start off by introducing myself! I am Mattie Smyth, a senior here at Creighton and the Eta Iota President for 2016. I am honored to be repre-senting all of the extraordinary women at the Eta Iota chapter and am doing my best to serve them and the Fraternity to the best of my abilities.

Kappas are campus leaders, schol-ars, and dedicated members of the global community.

This June we have 6 active members attending the national convention in San Di-ego, CA. We are excited for them to share the knowl-edge they learn with the chapter next fall.

While all of the women at Eta Iota are extremely busy balancing their academics, commitments to the Frater-nity, countless extracurricular interests, and family time, I can assure you that we all still have time to keep our sisterhood alive. While I am most definitely biased, I can

assure you that the Kappas on campus are the spunki-est, balanced, and most loyal women around. Whether you are reading this as a parent of an active or as an alumna, I can guarantee that you would be very proud to be parents and sisters to every single woman in our chapter. I am truly grateful that this organization has given me the opportunity to know all 142 of these in-spirational women. I would like to thank all the parents for raising such honorable daughters and I would like to thank all the alumnae for being the admirable women that we look up to so much.

RecruitmentReflections

In January, we kicked off 2016 with a Mardi Gras bang! This year Skit Day was changed to Sisterhood Day for the third recruitment round, and several of our sisters stood and shared why they went Kappa, and more importantly, why they stayed Kappa.

Our songs were a hit this year, with crowd favorites such as “Love on Top” and “I’m on a Roll.”

Welcoming home 43 new members, Eta Iota met Panhellen-ic quota and was proud to assimilate such a wonderful new group of women.

This April, we were very excited to welcome three amazing new members into our chapter through Spring COB.

The new members jumped right in by attending the over-night sisterhood retreat and spring formal dance within two weeks of formal pledging.

They will be joined by new members in September through Fall Informal Recruitment, and together they will begin the new member education process as a pledge class.

Eta Iota - Spring 2016 4

I didn’t know what to expect when I first joined a sorority. It usually takes me a while to really be myself around people, corny jokes and all, and I was worried I would not connect with people as fast enough to enjoy Kappa fully. Although I’ve only known my Kappa sisters for a couple months, I now feel as if I’ve known them for ages.

When people told me during recruitment that their sisters always pushed them to be the best version of themselves, I honestly did not fully believe them. Now, I believe that statement is truer than words could ever express. I’ve never had so many people directly say, “I’m proud of you,” in such a short amount of time.

With the support of my sisters, I am growing to my fullest potential. From encouragement to join new organizations on campus and supporting every last word of my jokes (even if it is with a fake laugh) my sisters have been with me through it all. Thank you, Kappa Kappa Gamma, for showing me how the grass is always greener on the side with your sisters.

My first semester with Kappa has been amazing! I’ve got-ten to meet so many amazing young women that I get to call my sisters. Joining a sorority was something that I’ve always wanted to do and Kappa has definitely lived up to my expectations.

My favorite memories with Kappa have been Big Little Reveal when I became a part of the #fam, the Sister-hood Retreat at the Creighton Retreat Center where I got to bond with some of the seniors and the Tao class, and Initiation when I officially became a member of Kap-pa Kappa Gamma.

I have loved all of the moments with Kappa so far and cannot wait to make more memories with my sisters over the next three years.

The webster definition of sisterhood is the close relationship among women based on shared experiences and concerns. The Eta Iota chapter of Kappa Kappa Gamma truly embodies the meaning of sisterhood. I could feel the sense of sisterhood the first time I entered the room during recruitment and I still feel it today.

By far my second semester at Creighton University was ten times better than my first because I made friendships and sisterly bonds in Kappa. Whenever I need a friend or someone to listen, my kappa sisters are willing to listen (even when I talk their ears off). In my opinion, Kappa is one of the best chap-ters on campus because we focus on the relationship we have together in Kappa whether that be bonding during service or just spending time together.

My favorite Kappa moment was spending time at the sister-hood retreat and getting to know my fellow Kappas. I have really enjoyed getting to know the upperclassmen in Kappa es-pecially those that I didn’t know prior to recruitment. At com-mencement, I was really proud to see Kappas wearing their letters while crossing the stage, showing their commitment to education and our wonderful fraternity. All in all, my first semester of being a KKG was excellent. I know that whatever I do in my life that Kappa is one of my keys to success.

This semester, we hosted a food fundraiser at Pickle-man’s, a gourmet sandwich shop in downtown Omaha. We brought over $1,000 of sales to Pickleman’s from members of the community who were supporting Eta Iota and The Kappa Kappa Gamma Foundation. Our donation to The KKG Foundation was just over $150.

As a chapter, we like to make sure we are not only supporting Reading Is Fundamental, but also The KKG Foundation, so each semester we host an event similar to this.

Our spring signature event is Kappa Kupcakes. We spent a week throughout campus taking orders for people who would like to buy a cupcake catered from Gigi’s Cupcakes and a carton of milk from Hiland Dairy. Throughout the week, we sold 735 cupcakes and with a few generous donations, we were able to raise just over $4,000 for Reading Is Fundamental. The follow-ing week was a little hectic because we had to deliver each of those 735 cupcakes!

Finally, as a chapter, we have a relationship with Conestoga, a RIF Sponsored Elementary School in North Omaha. This se-mester we had women volunteer at their book fair and period-ically in classrooms. The time in classrooms was spent helping young children develop and grow their reading and writing skills.

Eta Iota Chapter kicked off 2016 with our spring semester date party! It took place at one of our favorite partners, Shoreline Golf Course, and the theme was Flashback Friday! Dressed in their favorite clothes from the past, our sisters had a blast dancing the night away.

At the end of the spring semester, we had our annual Sapphire Ball Formal at the Omaha Livestock Exchange Ballroom. Each of our senior members was recognized with Senior Superla-tive Awards and then everyone sat down to eat a catered meal together. After eating and awards, everyone enjoyed a night full of music, dancing, and celebrating the end of the year with their sisters.

Eta Iota Chapter has had a lot of fun at all of their social events this semester! We are looking forward to our upcoming date par-ty and Semi Formal as well as some other social events that will be held throughout the semester!

This past year, we had two extremely successful sisterhood retreats. Our sisterhood retreat in February was an afternoon filled with team-building activities and outdoor fun on Creighton’s campus. Through these activities, ev-eryone was able to learn new and interesting facts about their sisters. The afternoon ended with a make-your-own trail mix station and an entertaining lip sync contest between pledge classes!

In April, we had our second ever overnight retreat at the Creighton Retreat Center in Griswold, Iowa. It was a great opportunity for everyone to escape the stress of upcoming final exams and spend some quality time with sisters. The Standards committee planned a variety of one-on-one, small group, and pledge class activities that were both meaningful and fun. We ended the night with pledge class bonding, which gave everyone a chance to talk about whatever was on their minds. We are looking forward to hosting more sisterhood events next year!
