There is a transformation occurring within the sporting world as more and more facilities and franchises realize that they can have an impact both off and on the field by changing the way that they operate.
Why Is Sustainability Important To Your Venue?

The adoption of Green Building Standards continues to advance.
There are a number of different standards from varying certifying bodies, all with their own advantages:
Green Globes: 136 buildings in the United States
BOMA 360: 600 certified buildings in the United States»Unisource is a BOMA 360 Ambassador
BOMA Best: the Canadian counterpart to both these standards with over 1600 certified facilities
LEED®: continues to be the industry standard
What Is The Standard For Certification?

LEED® is a green building tool that addresses the entire building lifecycle recognizing best-in-class building strategies.
LEED®, or Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, is transforming the way we think about how our buildings and communities are designed, constructed, maintained and operated across the globe. LEED® was conceived and is managed by the U.S. Green Building Council.
What Is The Standard For Certification?

LEED® is comprised of a number of different standards that cater to the needs of the buildings that are certified:
Commercial Interiors Retail: Commercial Interiors Neighborhood Development Homes Existing Buildings: Operations
& Maintenance
What Is The Standard For Certification?
New Construction Core & Shell Schools Retail: New Construction and
Major Renovations Healthcare
Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), LEED® is intended to help building owners and operators find and implement ways to be environmentally responsible and resource-efficient.
Over 2 billion square feet of building space is LEED® Certified worldwide.Every day 2 million square feet of commercial building space is being LEED® Certified.
10
Historically when you think LEED®, you think office buildings, shopping malls, schools, and hospitals.
You don’t necessarily think stadiums, baseball parks and hockey rinks.
That is changing as more franchises certify their buildings.
What Is LEED® Certification?

100 Possible Base Points
Five major credit categories:1. Sustainable Sites2. Water Efficiency3. Energy and Atmosphere4. Materials and Resources5. Indoor Environmental
Quality
10 Incremental Points available for innovation in design and regional priorities
Certified: 40–49 points Silver: 50–59 points Gold: 60–79 points Platinum: 80 points and above
As more and more buildings are built or certified, the benchmark has moved up.
In the not to distant past, where it was sufficient to simply have a building Certified or Silver, we are increasingly seeing the entry point now becoming Gold or even Platinum.
How is LEED® Certification Determined?
12
Not all buildings choose to pursue easy-to-achieve credits:
Only 60% of the certified buildings achieved the credit for implementing a high performance program
Only 48% actually conducted a custodial effectiveness assessment
Only 48% took the credit for the use sustainable cleaning equipment
What Points May Be Missed?
13
Many organizations neglect to implement solutions specifically around the implementation, and tracking of green cleaning programs that are easy and straightforward, generally low cost.
