Heritage Park celebrates progress. The progress of the men and women who created change, set history on a different path, empowered the advancement of not only Western Canada, but of our nation.

We celebrate mechanical achievements, like our great railroads and our iconic energy sector. Heritage Park not only celebrates progress; Heritage Park is here to bring it to life for all to experience firsthand. Visitors don’t just see the Old West, but feel it!

And when they feel it, they will appreciate the true grit and passion it took from our ancestors to make a promising life here.

But we are not yet telling the full story. What we are missing right now may be the most important story in Alberta—the birth of our energy industry.

The pioneers, the places and the pure power, drove forward an industry that has shaped Alberta and the Canadian economy, more than any other. This is a story that will describe our progress, from the discovery of our rich resources to our current experience in developing these assets. This story will also showcase what the future will hold to continue making Canada one of the most desirable countries in which to live and work.

SHARING OUR ALBERTA ENERGY STORY

From the early beginnings when Indigenous peoples roamed this vast territory, relying on nature’s bounty, to the ingenuity and drive of the pioneers of Western Canada’s energy industry as gas, oil and minerals were first discovered and used to advance our lifestyle and fund a growing nation, the people who chose this part of world to make their home were fearless mavericks and visionaries.

THE PAST

Through the restoration of the # 1 Dingman well and oil storage tank, coal mine and tunnel, miner’s cabin and water wheel, Park Warden’s Cabin, and nature trail, we will create an immersive, hands-on experience in the life of a pioneer in oil, gas and mining exploration. Step back to 1914 when oil was struck in Turner Valley. Travel into the depths of the earth and mine for coal. Experience the thrill of panning for gold and hike the Indigenous nature trail. Pioneers in the energy industry took risks and felt the exhilaration of these discoveries, paving the way for the nextgeneration of innovators and entrep-reneurs who continued to seek out anddevelop new, cleaner, more efficient ways of extracting the earth’s resources for the growth of a nation.

THE PRESENTAlberta has the most diverse hydro-carbon and renewable energy base onearth, and has risen to be one of the top five hydrocarbon producers in the world. We will build a new 4,500 square foot, ultra-efficient Interpretive Centre that will tell the tale of how we harnessed our pioneering spirit and innovative character and accomplished this feat despite operating in a harsh and remote environment. Alberta employs a stringent carbon tax regime with an eye to being a leader in environmental responsibility and stewardship. Through the use of technology and innovation, we have reduced our carbon footprint for hydrocarbon sources.

The Interpretive Centre will employ new technologies that corral the power of solar, wind, geothermal, and hydro. These renewable resources will be on display. Visitors will watch them function and learn how to apply the technology to everyday life. The Centre will be a testament to the benefit of green technology for our nation and the world.

THE FUTURE Glimpse into the world of tomorrow where autonomous electric cars carry people to their destinations. See how future clean-energy technologies will provide real-world solutions — not only to reduce carbon pollution that causes climate change, but also to drive a domestic energy economy with technologies that are increasingly cost-competitive with existing conventional technologies, even without accounting for climate benefits.

Through the use of virtual and augmented reality, this project will provide insight into the world of the future. Visitors and students will don a VR helmet, goggles, and gloves and experience future advancements in the energy industry and how those advancements will impact lives. This technology will be transferable to distance learning opportunities that will reach across the country and educate Canadians from coast to coast. The goal is to underscore how critical the industry is to Canada and to highlight, how cutting-edge technologies being developed right here in Alberta to bring the energy industry and environmental protection together.

Presenting the diversity of energy in all forms and how to manage it to create a sustainable, low-carbon future, will inspire our visitors and help them understand how their actions and decisions today will play an important role in our energy system tomorrow.

HERITAGE PARK HISTORICAL VILLAGE • NATURAL RESOURCE AREA RESTORATION 5

Phase 1 will restore the Natural Resource Area, an original section of the Park, on one of the most beautiful areas along the Glenmore Reservoir.

This area features a replica of the Dingman No. 1 Discovery Well, the Narrow Gauge Railway, the Oil Storage Tank, the Coal Tunnel and Mine, an original Miner’s Cabin and water wheel, Park Warden’s Cabin, and the Indigenous Nature Trail.

The goal of Phase 1 is to create an immersive, hands-on experience in the life of a pioneer in oil, gas and mining exploration. This revitalization will allow visitors to step back to 1914 when oil was struck in Turner Valley, travel into the depths of the earth as you mine for coal, experience the thrill of panning for gold and hike the Indigenous Nature Trail.

The creation of a new Interpretive Centre where over 65,000 students and approximately 620,000 visitors annually will be able to learn, experience and interact with Western Canada’s Natural Resources.

This Centre will develop interactive and engaging school and public programming, allowing students and visitors to explore the significance of our achievements. Distance learning modules will be developed to ensure students throughout Canada will have the opportunity to discover and experience these amazing educational resources. Special tours will be developed to provide an immersive and exciting experience for our global audience.

The goal of Phase 2 is to demonstrate new technologies and renewable resources that are being integrated into today’s world while offering a glimpse into the world of tomorrow. The year-round, ultra-energy-efficient Interpretive Centre will incorporate various green

technologies such as solar, wind, geothermal and grey water systems designed so that they will be visible to the visitors and demonstrate the conversion of these resources into useable, sustainable power. This 4,500 square foot, state-of-the-art centre will showcase in vivid action, how far energy advancements in renewables have progressed from the traditional harnessing of nonrenewable energy, into a marriage of both types of resources that reduce carbon and increase efficiency.

Through the use of virtual reality, this project will provide insight into the future. This advanced technology will allow visitors to don a VR helmet, goggles and gloves and experience the future of our energy industry and how the advancements of the future will impact everyday lives. This technology will also be transferable to provide distance learning that will reach across the nation and educate Canadians from coast to coast on the cutting edge technologies being developed in Alberta and through international partnerships.

NOW IS THE TIME

This project is much more than the restoration of a few interesting exhibits. It is the story of ingenuity, resilience, and strength, both physical and of character. This is the story of Alberta.

At a time when the world seems to be veering off into truly perplexing directions, Albertans need to tell our fellow Canadians how we built this nation. How the pioneers in the fossil fuel industry took risks and created the wealth and health of our country as we know it.

This project will present the facts based on what was, where we are today, and where we will be tomorrow. How we will continue to innovate, take risks and support the enviable way of life that Canadians now take for granted.

I am honoured to partner with Heritage Park to make this project happen. Please join me to share Alberta’s Natural Resources story —

our past, present and future — with a global audience.

– Mr. Robert (Bob) Brawn

“”

There is no better way to educate than to immerse people in a real life experience. Heritage Park is a living classroom where over 65,000 school children and 620,000 visitors annually learn through hands-on activities. Whether it is during those early years when oil was first struck in Turner Valley to how we are using technology today to discover, extract and distribute, to what the future of our energy industry will look like for the next generation of Albertans and Canadians, this project will accomplish this. We will educate the next generation, arm them with science-based facts and a balance perspective, and give them the tools required to form their own opinions.

Please make your financial commitment to this important project so that together, we can tell Alberta’s Story to the world.
