LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

I CHOSE OPTIMISM

There is a tendency in each successive generation to see today’s world as moving away from someimaginary, idyllic past and one step closer to some impending doom. We’re perpetually on our way to‘hell in a hand basket.’ It’s a pretty bleak, not to mention boring, view of the world. In some ways, thepeople who decry the state of the world are right. After all, part of the second law of thermodynamicsstates that “the total entropy of any system cannot decrease other than by increasing the entropy ofsome other system.”From the first day that man tried to organize his cave, we began moving awayfrom the original state of equilibrium, always gliding towards a greater state of chaos.

That being said, I took this position to try and reduce the chaos of the cycling communities of theMid-Atlantic and to help bring an awareness of each other and the issues they will be facing in the nextfew years.More eyes are being trained on cyclists of all disciplines these days, as cycling becomes amore popular sport and as it becomes a part of the green movement. From aggressively texting driversto entitled cyclists carrying guns, the rate of entropy has the potential to increase exponentially. Thereare very few bubbles left to live in and the result is we’ll have to come to a group consensus about ourown behavior and the rights we expect to retain. Someone is going to be making decisions about whatwe are allowed to do or not do, so it’s time to make our voices count. Sometimes it’s the voice we useon the streets during moments of conflict that matter as much as in the city council meeting.

It’s a Golden Rule message I’m trying to impart here; the world is cracking apart all around, the sky isfalling and I just want to ride my bike. Unfortunately my roomwon’t clean itself and if I don’t do mydishes the rats will do them for me.With all that going on isn’t it more fun to believe the world isevolving into a more exciting and better place, and isn’t our daily duty to help it get there?

TYLER’S JOURNAL

By Tyler Wren

After seven seasons withColavita/Sutter Home, 2010 finallybrings a change of scenery for me…Well, sort of. The Jamis/Sutter HomePro Cycling Team will be my homenow, though with much of the sameriders and staff, it really hasn’t beenmuch of a transition. One notablechange with the new squad will beour increasingly international racingfocus. Jamis has more globalmarketing goals than Colavita USA

did, so we’ll be broadening the reach of our racing calendar.

One of the implications of this change is more time racing inSouth America, where I can practice my Spanish and proveor disprove much of the ‘Wild West’ racing lore. Having justcompleted the Tour de San Luis in Argentina, SouthAmerica’s highest ranked road stage race, I once againwitnessed the insanity and sporadic lawlessness or that styleof racing. I shared some of my experiences from last year’sedition of this race in this column a year ago (i.e. ESPNhelicopter crash, stream crossing in final 2k, hurricane-likewind and rain combined with massive craters in the tarmac),so let me add a few stories of my own from this year’s raceand share some of the lore which may or may not be true.

Remember that stream crossing in the last 2k that Imentioned last year? This year, without an announcement(so that only the local teams would know), they moved thatstream to three hundred meters before the finish line. Fastdownhill, slam on breaks, close eyes and ford stream, thensprint for stage win. I saw the usual shenanigans of ridershanging onto team cars on climbs and pacing back fromcrashes, but nothing else too out of the ordinary, as this isnow South America’s premier event, so all were apparently ontheir best behavior.

As for the lore, teammates have told me that they havewitnessed the following at races well below the border. In thefinal kilometer of the final stage of a race in which the localteam had yet to win a stage, course marshals directed the field(off course) as the local team members turned into thefinishing straight and went 1-2-3-4-5. Protests ensued, butthe race officials upheld the victory. Similarly, in a differentrace, a local rider was in the breakaway of the day, but it wasbeing reeled in by the field in the last twenty kilometers, destined for failure. My teammate watched in astoundedamusement as the race ambulance passed the field, drove upto the break, and motor-paced the breakaway to the finishingline, extending their advantage and allowing them to sprint itout for the win. Most incredible to me is the story of a localrider attempting to compete in the time trial, which was nothis strongest event. His friend was to drive the motorcycle afew hundred meters in front of him, standard practice for atime trial at a bigger race. What was not standard was that hisfriend had affixed a nearly invisible fishing line to the back ofthat motorcycle and the rider bit onto a piece of cork at theother end of the line to give himself an extra boost.Apparently, it worked too well and his surprising dominatingperformance raised some eyebrows, but no sanctions wereimposed and he kept the win.

Not sure which stories to believe, but with races in Uruguayand Mexico on the calendar in the next couple months, Ihope to improve my Spanish and to observe, then relate toyou any, more adventures.

Adios y Gracias,Tyler

TRAINING

SPINNING THE WHEELSON INDOOR CYCLINGBy Bill Hauser

As you may have noticed, the weather in the Philadelphiaarea this winter has been particularly harsh. Unless youare one of those die hard cyclists who actually seem totake pride in the fact that they bike outdoors in frigid, icy, dark, unappealing conditions, you probably have beendoing the bulk, if not all, of your cycling indoors. Manyoptions for riding indoors exist and I am frequently askedwhich training option is “best” for preparing for the raceseason. There is no right or wrong answer, as each optionhas its pros and cons – and each athlete has his or herown training considerations.

One option that many cyclists consider is riding at homewith their bike set up on an indoor wind, magnetic orfluid resistance trainer which can be purchased at mostbike shops for less than $300. The obvious advantages tothis option, of course, are convenience and comfort. Thisoption also allows you to completely control your ride.Unlike riding outdoors, you are constantly pedaling (no“coasting” downhill) and, unlike riding in a structuredclass, you can make sure that you are riding at theappropriate intensity for your own particular trainingplan. If you are in a base phase of your training whichmany athletes are during this time of year there is noeasier way to make sure that you stay in your aerobic zonethan riding at home while watching the latest episode ofLost or 24 or whatever else you have DVR’d and not yethad a chance to catch up on. Similarly, if your trainingplan calls for intervals or hill workouts, you can select atraining DVD (such as the ever-popular Spinervals) thatis appropriate for the type of workout you need. Thedownside to riding at home, aside from the fact that yoursignificant other might not appreciate your bike being apermanent fixture in your family room, is the motivationfactor. No matter how many good shows you haveDVR’d, and no matter how big your Spinervals library is,riding at home alone can get just plain boring. You mayfind that the frequency and duration of your workoutsstart to dwindle over the winter months. This brings usto our next option . . .

Coach led cycling classes have become increasinglypopular in recent years. This option allows you to bringyour own bike to a training center and ride on a trainer ina structured class setting. Depending on the class, theworkout may be based on perceived effort, heart ratezones, or wattage. The advantage of this option is that

you generally get quality instruction from a coach and youcan enjoy the camaraderie of your fellow riders.Compared to “Spinning” type classes, this option also hasthe plus of allowing you to train on the same bike (withthe same bike computer) that you will be training andracing on “in-season”. On the flip side, riding your ownbike means that you have to load up and carry your bike toeach class which, at least in my experience, is never a funproject. Also, like any other structured class, the coach ledworkout may not be appropriate for your particulartraining plan, so you need to do some research to find outwhat type of workout is being offered for a particular class. If you are in your base phase, for example, or if you have a5k run scheduled for the next day, you don’t want to showup unknowingly for a class that has you doing a highresistance, high intensity workout.

Finally, spin classes are another option that cyclists aremaking part of their training routine. Like coach ledclasses, spin classes offer the advantage of motivation froman instructor and the camaraderie of other riders. Theseclasses also offer the advantage of not having to lug yourbike to a training center. The biggest factor to considerwhen deciding to take a spin class is the instructor. Whilemany instructors these days are knowledgeable, certifiedinstructors and may even have a triathlon or cyclingbackground, others may be essentially “aerobic”instructors who have never ridden a bike outdoors – andwho may not know how to properly structure a class.Based on past experiences, some good signs that you havethe latter type of instructor are that she has you pedalbackwards, puts her foot on your bike wheel for “extra

resistance”, or has you do yoga moves on the bike. Aswith other structured classes, you need to make surethat the type of class is suitable for your particulartraining phase – it may be difficult to stay in youraerobic zone if the rest of the class is hammering outof the saddle to the latest Lady Gaga song. Since youare not riding your own bike, you also need to makesure that you are properly set up on your spin bike.Your key considerations here are the height of yourseat, the fore/aft position of your seat and the height ofyour handlebars. For your first couple of classes, arriveat least five minutes early and seek assistance fromyour instructor for proper bike set up. Finally, you alsoneed to keep in mind that spin bikes have a weightedflywheel and a fixed gear – to avoid injury, you need tomake sure that you never stop abruptly on the bike.

Keep in mind that whatever training option youchoose, what’s most important is that you are gettingon the bike during these colder months and buildingyour fitness for the outdoor season, which is justaround the corner.

Where is your High School Mountain Bike Team?

If you want it, it’s coming .

In 2001 Matt Fritzinger, a Berkley California schoolteacher, decidedto start a high school mountain bike team. Nine years later that lonely, loosely organized team has transformed into the NorCal High SchoolLeague with 23 teams and 560 riders. That success has migrated south, creating the SoCal High School League which saw 15 teams and over 100riders in its first year.

In some ways it seems fairly logical that cycling should be considered a highschool sport. After all, almost all of us learn to ride a bicycle at some point inour childhood, and usually before the age of ten. That means that far morepeople have cycling in common than other sports such as tennis, football, wrestling or field hockey. So, why was it that as kids we rode our bikestogether to the ball field, but didn’t think to race them around the infield?Let’s blame the disconnect on a culture that sees bikes as a child’s toy, andthe lack of adults willing to step in to show how, like a ball, you can play witha bike in more ways than one.

Show them how and they will do it better than you.

When the NorCal League sent a call out to other states to start their ownprograms, only one Pennsylvania resident answered. Zach Adams, who was10 years old the first year of the NorCal League, saw a golden opportunity tolearn how to make it happen. Now pushing 20 and in his second year ofcollege, Adams has been running a junior cycling team, coaching andpromoting mountain bike races in the Mid-Atlantic for the past four years.Adams came up under the tutelage of local racer, promoter and coach MikeKuhn, who started the original Pennsylvania High School Mountain BikeLeague in the middle of the last decade without much success in the face oflackluster interest from the state and other volunteers.

Adams now has the force of a proven organization behind him and a formulathat should work to get Pennsylvania a league of competitive high schoolaged athletes.

It Should Work, Right?

Pennsylvania is a cyclist’s Mecca, right? We have great trails, beautiful roads, international cycling races and cities with incredible riding infrastructures. Forthat matter, the entire Mid-Atlantic region is a progressive cycling culture. There should be enough enthusiasm and finances to support a high schoolcycling league. Many cities in the region have trails within their borders orwithin a half hour drive. By all accounts, Pennsylvania and the surroundingstates have all the resources they need.

Adams has experience, motivation and great mentors behind him to get thePennsylvania Scholastic Cycling League off the ground. He also recognizesthe need for slow steady growth. “For 2010 I would like to have 30 kids showup to both conferences, getting their feet under them.”

The structure and the ground rules for the implementation of a high schoolcycling league is flexible enough that it seems almost a given that it could

sprout and grow with minimum effort. Take one volunteer, a few kids, acouple days a week of practice and four races in the spring and you have ateam. Kids without a high school team or a composite team can rideunattached. The theory is that there are kids out there looking for analternative to the other highly competitive high school sports. What they needis a leader to introduce them to the world of competitive cycling.

“It’s just a matter of waiting for committed parties to come together. I see2010 as comprised of mostly composite teams and unattached kids racing. Isee the school based teams as taking a while to get grounded and to getthem to work” says Adams.

The key element missing for the league to succeed is a force of volunteerswho are willing to sacrifice their own riding time to give back to kids and thesport. The California programs have three full time employees to run theleagues, train the coaches and set a standard for the different programs tofollow. Right now Adams is staring at a hundred pound puppy bouncing in hislap with no dog whisperers around.

What is there so far?

Currently the league has structure and is split into two conferences. TheEastern division stretches from Philadelphia to Allentown and the Centraldivision is bordered by Chambersburg and Harrisburg. Each Conference willhave three races on the same weekends. April 17th, 24th and May 1st.Carlisle will host the Central Conference races while the Eastern Conferenceraces will be at Spring Mountain Ski Area. The state championships will be inMarysville, outside of Harrisburg, on May 7th.

Adams is looking for committed adults to give some time this spring. If youare interested in the Pennsylvania Scholastic Cycling League, you can findmore information at www.pascl.blogspot.com. To learn more about theNorcal and Socal programs to see what is possible visit,www.norcalmtb.com and www.socaldirt.org.

So many kids these days are already playing traditional high school sportsoutside of their school teams due to the level of competition for the varsityand junior varsity squads. It would be a shame if the strong cyclingcommunities of the Mid-Atlantic regions failed to tap into the surplus ofyoung adults to create youth cycling leagues due to a lack of volunteers. Ifanyone is interested in creating a league in their communities, Zach Adamsis ready with all the information you need to get started.

Looking for a good read while you’re recovering from a longrun? Or need an extra gift for the runner in your life? This setof books might hit the spot.

MY LIFE ON THE RUN:THEWIT,WISDOM,AND INSIGHTS OF AROAD RACING ICONBy Bart Yasso withKathleen Parrish

As the Chief Running Officerof Runner’s World, Yasso hasgone some interesting placeson foot, and My Life on theRun recounts the more farflung and odd. How odd? Howabout a bare buns run (whichis as naked as it sounds), BurroRacing (which involves racingwith a donkey-like animal),and the Antarctica Marathon? Yasso mixes in the story of hislife along the way, but the racing memories and recounts arewhat make the book most interesting. Pick this one up ifyou’d like a lot of humor with your running memoir.

ONCE A RUNNERBy John L. Parker.

A true running classic, and onefinally put into hardback formafter years of being passedaround from runner to runneron the race circuit. Parker selfpublished this novel in 1978,and sold copies out of the backof his car. In 2007, it was themost sought after out-of-printbook in the U.S. Fortunatelyfor the rest of us, it waspublished by Scribner thisyear. The story is aboutQuenton Cassidy, a college runner and his quest for glory inthe mile race. While his training methods wouldn’t berecommended today, the book captures what it’s like to be ona running team and to give up just about everything to shavea few seconds off your time.

BORN TO RUN: AHIDDEN TRIBE,SUPERATHLETES, AND THEGREATEST RACE THEWORLD HAS NEVER SEENBy Christopher McDougall.

Some have called this a bookabout barefoot running, butthat’s only part of Born toRun. Not only does the bookexplain why ditching ourrunning shoes could be thebest thing we’ve ever done forour running form (and bodies), but McDougall shows why bytracking down a race of Indians for whom running isn’t achore but a way of life.Wonderfully written and immenselyentertaining, Born to Run will have you rethinking everythingyou think you know about running (though I wouldn’trecommend reading right before a big race – you’ll over thinkyour stride. Save it for the off season or between races).

A RACE LIKE NO OTHER:26.2 MILES THROUGH THESTREETS OF NEWYORKBy Liz Robbins

This book is about the historyof the New York CityMarathon as told through2007’s race. In A Race Like NoOther, Robbins follows a groupof runners, mile by mile, through the race – from frontof the pack runners to a cancersurvivor and recoveringalcoholic trying to run theirbest races. These mixed pointsof view show how many people run and why, from the eliteswho started running to Kenyan schools to people who run forthe health and fun of it. It also tells how a race throughCentral Park became a major international event – and whyit’s so hard to earn a race bib.

P olar bear plunges are not the answer for mostswimmers and triathletes, so most of us survivewinter by just grinding out a few pool yards.

Although this summer’s open water and triathlon seasonmay be a distant light at the end of a twenty five metertunnel, how you spend your winter days circle swimmingcan make a huge impact on how you feel and perform inthis season’s open water events.

Experienced swimmers structure their pool workoutsaround intervals designed to increase speed andconditioning by controlling the rest, distance andintensity of various “sets.” Pool or ocean, swimmersneed to apply the same training methods as runners andcyclists to improve performance: Duplicate racesituations and stress your body beyond its comfort zone. There is no substitute for spending time in the ocean, lake or bay, but there are methods to simulate thephysiological conditions we encounter in the open water.

Once away from the pool, the most common mistake isnot applying the pool principals that may have gottenyou faster over the winter. While you wait for the roads tobe plowed and the pool to re-open, find a way toincorporate some of the following principle into yourwinter and summer training sessions.

Pool Techniques & Drills forOpen Water Success:• Head-Up 50’s – Just what they sound like. Drill: Swim3 x 50 freestyle and check your times for each swim.Next, swim 3 x 50 and this time lift your head twice oneach length to sight on an object at the end of thepool. Check your times and work on improving thequickness and efficiency of sighting those imaginarybuoys.

• Longer “Broken” Swims – Duplicate the mad rush ofthe start by doing intervals that take your heart rate up

YOUR LOCAL GUIDE TO CYCLING, RUNNING, SWIMMING & TRI KEEPER 2010 47

and then force you to relax and findyour groove. Drill: Swim 300 meterson an interval that allows twentyseconds of rest after each repeat.Within each 300, swim 50 at 85%,rest ten seconds, 200 at 65%, restten seconds, 50 at 85%. Repeat thistwo or more times as yourconditioning improves.

• Breath Control Swims – Holding orcontrolling your breathing duringswims extends your ability toovercome the panic driven urge tobreathe. When you are diving underwaves or miss a couple of breaths in amass swim start, this tolerance willhelp you stay calm and focused. Drill:Swim 100 and for the 25’s – (1)breathe every stroke, (2) every third,(3) every fifth and (4) every seventh.Take a long rest interval and repeatbased on your level of conditioning.

• Flag Runs – If you want to reinforce when swimming isfaster than running, have some fun and build some legstrength add a little running to your swim. Drill: Start inthe shallow end with one hand on the wall, RUN to thefirst flags, push off from the bottom and sprint the restof a 50.

Open Water Techniques & Drillsfor Safety and Performance:• Walk the Shore: Walk waist deep into the water andsurvey the bottom for rocks, sand bars or unstablefooting, and make this part of every pre-race or pre-training ritual. While you are checking the bottom watchthe water for currents, chop, waves and rips. Learnmore about how to read the water by joining anexperienced open water group or asking the lifeguards.

• In & Outs: From ten yards up the beach run into thewater and sprint 50 to 100 yards or just past the surfbreak. Recover for a minute then sprint back in and upthe beach to your starting point.

• Tempo Training: Don’t just float around and let everyopen water session be a social swim. After warming upfor a few minutes, begin race pace swims withcontrolled rest intervals. Drill: Three minutes at an 80%effort followed by one minute at 50%. Repeat thepattern several times based on your level ofconditioning.

• No Wall Intervals: Replace the twenty-five meter poolstandard with sets based on stroke counts. Drill: 25strokes at 75%, 25 strokes at 85%, 50 Strokes at 95%.The combinations are as infinite as your pool workoutswithout the need to learn flip turns.

• Time Trial: Find a course that will take fifteen to thirtyminutes to swim. “Race” the course and record yourtime to set an early season benchmark. Repeat thesame distance swim over the summer to measure yourconditioning and progress. Keep in mind that differentwater conditions can affect your time, so focus asmuch on your perceived exertion as you do on theoverall time.

• Play: Get comfortable in the water. Body surf, paddleboard, play in the waves or just practice puttingyour head down and looking into the deep. If youspend long enough in the ocean your are going to bebumped by something unexpected, splashed by adolphin, startled by a plastic bag or stung by a jellyfish.Statistically your bike ride is more dangerous than thechance of a life-threatening encounter in the ocean, sokeep in mind that often the scariest things in the openwater are the fears we bring with us from the land.

Pick a few drills from the list above to work a little varietyinto your winter lane time and visualize the open watersessions you can have when the snow forecasts becomewave reports. Experiment to see what works to keepyou motivated, and remember how you feel about thewater is as important as a feel for the water.

The Valley Preferred Cycling Center (VPCC) celebrates its 35thanniversary this year with nine Friday nights of professional, international Olympic-caliber racing highlighted by the returnof the U.S. Junior National Championships to the famedTrexlertown track for the time, Executive Director MartyNothstein announced Thursday.

In addition to the World Series of Cycling professionalschedule and four days with the best young riders in thecountry, there will be 17 nights of the 24-7 Fitness SuperTuesday Pro-Am race nights and 16 Masters and Rookiesevents for a total of 46 race days on the 2010 calendar.

“It’s important that our fans know that, once professionalracing begins, it will occur every Friday night for nine weeks, with the exception of our traditional Independence Day break’’said Nothstein, former Olympic gold and silver medalist in theSprint competition and a three-timeWorld Champion onthe track.

“But we also want people to know that racing doesn’t beginand end on Friday nights,” Nothstein continued. “Tuesdaynights offer a terrific competitive schedule as the best risingstars in the sport try to earn the right to move up to Elitecompetition, and our Masters and Rookies series is some of thebest entertainment in the sport.”

Friday’s calendar will feature the return of classic fan favoritessuch as the Keirin Cup, the Salamander Madison Cup,Tandemonium and the U.S. Tandem Championships and theFestival of Speed featuring the Artie Greenburg 10-MileMemorial U.S. Championships. Also returning is the AirProducts Finals night and an expanded version of the popularCorporate Challenge, which allows companies andorganizations from across the region to put their ownemployees on the track for an Italian pursuit and a chance toshine under the Friday night lights.

Dave Chauner of Pro Cycling Tour, who has produced thePhiladephia International Championship for the past 25 years, joined Jack Simes III to open T-town for Rodale in 1975. Hesaid the early promotional tactics paired with great racing putthe velodrome on the international map.

“When Jack and I were hired by Bob Rodale as the firstmanagement team, our philosophy was to promoteTrexlertown as if it were Madison Square Garden … play to the

crowd, build personalities, present cycling as entertainment aswell as exciting sport,” Chauner said. “We experimented withformats and presentation and created short, fast programs. Itworked. Pretty soon, we packed the place every Friday nightand Trexlertown arguably became the best outdoor trackin the world.”

Nothstein said the 35th Anniversary year will renew the VPCCfocus on the community programs that have made T-town apowerhouse on international track cycling for more than threedecades. A product of the Air Products Cycling Program andBicycle Racing League, Nothstein said he knows howimportant these programs are for the development of youngtalent and the continued strength of track cycling on a nationaland international scale.

Added Nothstein, “We have trained dozens and dozens anddozens of national champions and Olympic competitors righthere on my home track and we want to build on that record.”

CHOICE GEAR

Camelbak XLPBy Harlan PriceThis Camelback XLP is a solid little package with a 72oz bladder that hasbeen surprisingly free of the little quirks that normally annoy me withhydrations packs. When you pick up an empty XLP it’s light in the handsand has a simple and solid feel to it. According to the Camelbackliterature, the pack weighs just over half a pound when empty. It is smalland doesn’t have a lot of room, but on some recent four hour rides Ifound that I could stash a windbreaker, a small apple, a sandwich bag ofgranola and a few tools without much problem. The inside pocket holdsa Co2 pump, cartridge and a mini tool pretty well, while the expandableoutside pocket is the best place for a tube. Don’t expect to load it up for afour hour ride if you like to be prepared for anything, eat a lot and shedlots of clothes.

Overall I liked the fit of the pack a lot. I have a relatively small frame at5’9” and 150lbs, and it fit me really well, sitting high on my back (asdesigned to allow access to jersey pockets), and almost disappeared frommy conscience when riding. When ducking under low branches, it stayedclose to the body and didn't hit the low brush like a big pack often does.It is small enough that it fits under my windbreaker on road rides toavoid frozen water bottles in these cold months. The removable waiststrap allows the XLP to become even less cluttered for casual riding.

Overall I really like this bag and see myself using it on a regular basis inthe mountains and on the road. I would love to see Camelback add the

hose clip that they sell for $2 as a standard feature. The XLP is a small bag with some versatility and bridges the gap between asmall SUV and two-seater sports car. Check out www.camelbak.com for more info.

Princeton Tec: Fuel HeadlampBy Bruckner Chase

Simple, lightweight and reliable, the new Fuel by PrincetonTec hits exactly what one needs in a multiuse headlamp. After years of racing and pre-dawn arrivals, a headlamp isnow indispensible in my gear bag, but only in recent yearshave the lamps evolved into something as user friendlyas the fuel.

Princeton Tec’s headlamp runs on three AAA batteries thathold the fuel to an almost unnoticeable 78g. The brightestsetting throws out 43 lumens and two lower settings extend

the battery life to almost 146 hours. The four LED light source provides a focused wide beam for everything from night trail runsto pre-event, pre-dawn gear set-ups. With the flash and low beam setting, navigating city streets becomes much safer when broaddaylight training is not an option.

Specifications and numbers are great, but most noticeable about the Fuel is how the unit feels. The asymmetrical, ratchetedsingle arm bracket makes directing the light simple and effective when bounding down a trail. The large push button switch onthe top of the casing is easy to find and operate, even with gloves. If you find yourself waxing a board for an early morning surfsession, the water resistant IPX4 rating means the headlamp can survive a few splashes and being thrown into a bag withyour wetsuit.

For the fashion minded, the fuel is available in four colors: black, green, olive drab and pink. At $26.99, the fuel is available atlocal specialty stores as well as online. Not to be missed is the fact that Princeton Tec is local, and based just up the road inTrenton. To learn more about the fuel and all of Princeton Tec’s products go to www.princetontec.com.

TRISWIM: Shampoo, Conditioner,Body Wash & LotionBy Bruckner ChaseThe chemicals in pool water are designed to kill, and as my pooltime increases my hair and skin are also in a battle for their life.Aside from chemical damage, I don’t like to smell like last night’sswim workout with the first glistening of sweat in the morning’srun. TRISWIM’s family of products not only kill the smell and getrid of the chemicals, they are like a recovery drink for the outside ofyour body.

Lots of swimmer-focused body care products neutralize chlorineodor, but TRISWIM goes further and uses “sequestering agentswhich assist in attacking the chlorine, grabbing a hold of it, andwashing the chemical down the drain.” Best of all, the productsfollow up by healing your body with organic aloe vera as well asvitamins A, E and provitamin B5.

My work lands me all over the country in a wide range of pools. Aside from a little muscle fatigue, I need to leave the pool behindas I go about my day. From Ocean City, to DC, to Long Beach and Irvine, TRISWIM has performed more consistently than Ihave in some of those venues. As someone who also spends a lot of time in the ocean, I have found that the products help get ridof that post-saltwater dryness and damage.

In addition to taking care of your body’s surface, TRISWIM is committed to helping athletes and giving back to the sport. Check outtheir website for a wealth of information including swim workouts, drills and videos. The company also supports the ChallengedAthletes Foundation and the Team Duke – JohnWayne Cancer Foundation. Go towww.tri-swim.com to find out more.

TRISWIM products are available in 8.8 oz tubes as well as 2 oz bottles for those of you needing to pass through TSA security onthe way to the pool. You can find the products online and at local sports specialty shops. Liberty Sports will have moreTRISWIM product reviews in upcoming issues and online at www.libertysportsmag.com.

Footprint Bamboo SocksBy Kristen Gavin and Matt Reece

Footprint Bamboo Active Wear is a Pennsylvania-based company with highstandards. Footprint continues to expand their line of bamboo wear with their newperformance socks. Our local friends were nice enough to send us over a sampling ofthree different pairs of socks, the Anklet Performance Sock ($10.99), TechnicalSki/Snowboard Socks ($17.00) and 3/4 Athletic Crew Black Socks ($10.50).

The first thing you, and your feet, will notice is how soft these socks are. All threepairs are extremely confortable and have held up to constant wear. The second istheir ability, an important factor in performance wear. Not only did our feet not gethotspots while running in the anklet, and remained at a comfortable temperature allday while playing in the snow in the ski/snowboard socks. The socks never got stinky, even after a few days in smelly shoes, and the black crew socks are great for thoselong office days in non-breathing, but highly fashionable, dress shoes.

The reason is the organic bamboo fiber, which is naturally light and airy, hypoallergenic, and antibacterial while remaining machine washable and dryer safe.If you are worried about putting a dent in nature’s bamboo stocks – worry not!

Bamboo grows incredibly fast, up to 75 feet in just 45 days, naturally regenerates, and sends out an average of six new shoots peryear.

Imagine treating your feet with a sock that is soft, silky and odorless all day long! Footprint Bamboo Active Wear offers everythingfrom bed linens to t-shirts to socks - all environmentally friendly, all odor-free, and all supporting local industry. Check out theirwebsite www.footprintbamboo.com to locate stores, shop online, and read their full story. It seems is appropriate that their taglinereads, “Leave a good impression…”

CHOICE GEAR (CONT.)

Adidas miCoachBy Brook Gardner

The key to a successful training campaign, as has been preachedby running gurus near and far, is to train smarter. Adidas hascreated a training platform called miCoach which can help youdo just that. Launched in January at the Consumer ElectronicsShow in Las Vegas, miCoach aims to not only help people"begin to run" but also to help more advanced runners taketheir performances to the next level. miCoach simplifies theconcept of heart rate-based training in order to help runners ofall abilities train as if they had a personal coach.

As any running coach will attest, there is no such thing as a"one size fits all" approach to training. Each person hasindividual needs, which miCoach takes into account while alsosimplifying heart rate training – a concept that can be difficultto understand for even the most experienced runners.

miCoach breaks down heart rate training into four specificcolor-coded zones: Blue ("energy zone" - easy effort); Green("endurance zone" - medium effort); Yellow ("strength zone" -hard effort); and Red ("power zone" - maximum effort). Thesezones are then integrated into the miCoach devices andweb site, which serve to facilitate the individualizedtraining programs.

The introductory miCoach device is called the Zone (Retail:$69.99), which is a heart rate monitor strap and wrist-mountedunit. The chest strap sends data to the wrist unit, whichcontains four differently colored LED lights that correspond tothe aforementioned training zones. The user can glance at theZone unit during a workout and determine if they areexercising at the correct intensity.

The second device, and the more robust of the two, is called thePacer ($139.99). The Pacer consists of a heart rate monitorchest strap, the Pacer unit that can be clipped onto an armbandor waist, as well as a stride sensor, which can be worn in thefootbed of miCoach-compatible adidas shoes, as well as on topof the shoe for interchangeability with other footwear. ThePacer can be worn in tandem with an MP3 player, or the usercan wear the unit by itself. There are currently more than 3,000workouts available through the miCoachWeb site, all of whichare based on heart rate feedback that is provided in real-time byaudible cues (via headphones) that tell the user to slow downor speed up based on the training zone they should be induring that point in the training session.

The miCoachWeb site is really the cornerstone of this product.Users can select from one of six families of training plansranging from “learn to run,” which is designed to help someonebegin a running program, up to “finish faster,” which wascreated to help a more advanced runner set a personal best at acertain distance. Each user is asked to set up a free account onthe site that will reqeust that they enter their personal physicaldata (height, weight, etc.) and lets them choose the trainingprogram that is right for their running ability.

The miCoach Pacer attaches to MP3 armbands or can clip onto awaistband and is roughly the size of a small car alarm remote, weighing next to nothing.

Users can customize their workout goals and select their currentfitness level before beginning a new program. miCoach thencreates an individualized workout plan that is mapped in thecalendar interface, which doubles as a training log.

After a workout, the Pacer is synced to the miCoach user profileon the Web site (via downloadable software and a USB cable).Once the information is uploaded, the user can view his/herworkout summary that includes distance, calories burned andother relevant workout data, but more importantly, the interfacedetails the amount of time spent in each of the coached heart ratezones and then provides feedback and advice based on the dataanalyzed from the workout.

Within a specific program there are levels that one can choosebased on current fitness levels. For example, if someonewanted to begin to run, they might be asked if they can jog forfive minutes without rest. For someone looking to "finishfaster" for a half marathon, they might be asked whether theyhave previously completed the distance in less than two hours, while the next level may be suited to those who have finishedin under 1 hour, 45 minutes. This criteria is structured toascertain information necessary to evaluate the user's currentlevel of fitness as they begin their miCoach training program.

The web site also allows for customization of each user'sroutine and commitment level. Users can select the day of theweek they want their training week to begin, which day to dotheir long run (if training for a longer distance event) and thenumber of days they can run during the week. Each user isasked to complete an "assessment run" before engaging in thetraining program, which helps establish heart rate thresholdinformation and other data needed to accurately calibrate theheart rate component of miCoach. There is an algorithm thatmiCoach uses to set specific heart rate zones withoutcompleting the assessment run, but it is recommended thateach user complete this task prior to engaging in a trainingprogram.

Once a workout is complete, the user is asked to sync the Pacerto their computer (Mac and PC compatible), which thenuploads the data from their most current workout to theironline miCoach profile. The profile displays the details of eachworkout including distance covered, calories burned, stridesper minute and the percentage of the workout the user spent inthe correct heart rate zone as instructed during the course ofthe workout.

Every runner, whether novice or advanced, can benefit fromthe instruction provided by a coach. But knowing how to trainsmart and accessibility to a personal coach is not somethingevery runner possesses. Adidas has introduced miCoach in anattempt to break down these barriers and to provide real-timecoaching backed up with the scientific data of heart rate-basedtraining. Future updates will add more functionality to theplatform, including GPS integration and pace-based trainingprograms.

miCoach is available for purchase online at shopadidas.com, aswell as through Adidas’ Sport Performance Stores and retailersacross the U.S.
