The absolute most important resource for survival is water. Whether you’re on a hike in the back country or an extended trip overseas, the clock begins ticking when you run out of safe drinking water. Severe flooding, storms, and civil unrest can strike at any time, or your vehicle can break down and you’re simply stranded. You can be caught by surprise without a means of obtaining the 1 gallon per day of drinkable water that every adult needs.

Your health and survival will begin evaporating even faster if you ingest even a few drops of contaminated water. Almost no natural source of water in the world is free of contamination, even the clearest, coolest mountain stream. These contaminants include the pro-tozoans (single-celled organisms) and cysts – nasty intestinal parasites such as E Coli, Giardia, and Cryptosporidium. Getting infected with any of these is no joke, as I found out once on an overseas trip. Some of these sicknesses come on fast and incapacitate you, greatly diminishing your chances of survival.

With this in mind, it makes absolute sense to invest in a form of water purification. One surefire method for purifying water is to boil it. But if a fire and a pot are not available, there are several other, excellent, filtration and purification options for defeating these diseases.

FEMA recommends that everybody store at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food in case of emergen-cies that disrupt the normal food supply chain. Plenty of foods available at your local supermarket fill the bill: ready-to-eat canned meats, fruits, vegetables, milk, and juices, as well as dry cereal, protein or fruit bars, peanut butter, dried fruit and nuts, crackers, and energy bars. Make sure your stock includes food for infants, pets, and family members with special dietary needs. It’s also a good idea to add some "comfort" foods to help keep spirits up. But avoid snacks with a lot of salt; they’ll make you thirsty, which will put a strain on your water consumption.

A B UCK ET FULL OF GOO DNESS A number of companies specialize in freeze-dried food that has a very long shelf life, usually 12 to 25 years. Manufacturers like Mountain House have decades of experience making MREs and long-range reconnaissance patrol (LRRP) rations for our military. They come in individually sealed packets that keep the contents untainted, and you can buy them in handy, pre-packed assortments. Simply stock up on the number of meals you need, and the variety is built in.

I really like the Mountain House Just-In-Case Classic Assortment Bucket. It contains more than a week’s worth of food for one person (29 servings) packed in a re-sealable plastic bucket that can be used as a camp stool, water bucket, or storage box when the food is gone.

TAS TES G REAT & FI LLI NG Another benefit of these meals is their ease of preparation. Just open the packet, add water – boiling hot water is best - and stir with a spoon, making sure you mix the contents thoroughly. Seal the bag to help the food heat up, and in 5 minutes, bon appetit!

Freeze-dried food will increase your water consumption and storage needs, so plan accordingly. For example, the Mountain House assortment requires 21 cups of water (about 1.3 gal.) total to cook all of the meals. Not a lot, but depending on the number of people you expect to feed, it can add up.

You might be surprised at how much these meals taste like fresh-made food. Getting the necessary calorie intake is critical for survival; eating food that tastes good helps keep up morale. I first had some of the Mountain House meals during a military contract trip and absolutely loved ’em! Over the years, I’ve eaten more of them than I can count, I travel with them, and I "taste tested" a bucket of them as prep for this article and am ready for more!

PROV IS IONS FOR STORAGE When the power goes out, the clock starts ticking on food stored in refrigerators and freezers – bacteria in food grows rapidly when the temperature gets above 40° F. Thawed food can be eaten if it’s still "refrigerator cold", but throw away any food that’s been room temperature more than 2 hours. Cooking and eating utensils must be kept clean to prevent the spread of contaminants, and garbage should be stored in closed containers well away from the food stock.

Emergency provisions need to be stored in containers that protect them from deterioration and contamination, especially if stored in an automobile or a shed where rodents may visit. Nonperishable dry food should be stored in covered, moisture-resistant containers such as the modular, stackable FoodBrick contain-ers of lightweight high-density polyethylene (HDPE). Individual FoodBricks can be detached from the stack and carried elsewhere for use or even stashed in the trunk of a small car.

A critical part of preparing for emergencies is to make provisions for medical situations that can arise when government-provided services are unavailable, far away, or simply overwhelmed. Cuts, burns, sprains, fractures, sudden illness, and other minor or major injuries must be treated promptly to prevent complications. A well-stocked first aid kit is a vital item in your survival arsenal.

There is a great variety of kits available, in different sizes and equipped to treat injuries of various degrees of severity. My personal medical kit in my car is the Bighorn Sportsman Medical Kit from Adventure Medi-cal. It’s a well-thought-out, enhanced first aid kit that’s just the right choice for dealing with a variety of hunting, fishing, or other outdoors medical needs, and it can serve as a great auto or home first aid kit. This kit covers most of the important bases with items for stopping bleed-ing, bandaging wounds, stabilizing fractures and sprains, and various medications.

Of special note among the 50+ different types of items in the kit, is the big selection bandages and dressings in different sizes, QuikClot® for stopping severe bleeding, heavy duty shears used by EMTs, moleskin for fixing blisters, tape, nitrile protective gloves, petrolatum dressings for burns, a disposable thermometer, forceps for splinter and tick re-moval, 5 types of medications, and 3 types of antibiotics/antiseptics, and a CPR face shield. It even includes a booklet that I have found to be an excellent, detailed guide to wilderness and travel medicine.

Important for any good first aid kit is to have its contents logically ar-ranged in well-marked, easy-to-find compartments. The Bighorn Sportsman kit has this, and its easy-to-see, bright orange nylon case slips neatly into your pack or even a large jacket pocket. The sturdy handles can be snap-linked to your pack or gear, so you can make sure this kit is always with you. What I also like about it is that it has extra room for additional medical items. I stuff my kit with some spare items and prescription medications.

I highly recommend adding at least one item for stopping life-threat-ening severe bleeding – a tourniquet. Hunting, range, and vehicle ac-cidents have resulted in loss of life that could have been prevented if an effective method for halting severe bleeding were available. The SOF® Tactical Tourniquet by Tactical Medical Solutions emerged from field experience in the Global War on Terror. “SOF” stands for Special Op-erations Forces because it was designed by U.S. Army Special Forces medics who perfected it literally right out of the war zones.

The Tactical Tourniquet is very compact to carry, and it is wide enough to provide the best possible arterial compression to stop a severe bleed, even from an amputation. It can be applied one-handed, and the hardware for tightening it is both easy to use and made of aluminum to virtually eliminate the risk of breakage. A tourniquet can save a life, but if used improperly, it can cause permanent damage. Before you get into a situation where you might need to use this or any similar product, you should first get proper training in the use of tourniquets.
