Dear KIB Supporter,

What a year! Great work and growth continued. Adopt a Block coordinators grew to more than 600 strong, keeping our city clean and addressing neighborhood blight. The Great Indy Clean Up swept millions of pounds of litter from our public places. Great places were being created; amongst them, an outdoor reading area and butterfly garden dedicated to an Indian Creek Elementary school teacher; and a neighborhood park shaded by a cool shelter made from the RCA Dome roof, not far from The Children’s Museum.

And, we’re so grateful to our donors, and the City of Indianapolis who responded to our urgent plea to water 11,000 trees a week during an historic drought. You helped us employ incredible teenagers, working with our Youth Tree Team, who worked tirelessly to preserve trees for future generations.

In 2012, KIB board and staff also dug deep to gather input from our partners, and looked to the latest research to understand how KIB could best contribute to our community over the next three years.

Dr. Doug Tallamy, researcher and author of Bringing Nature Home, makes a strong case that people have tremendous power to help nature thrive in cities. By choosing native plants in our yards, neighborhoods, parks and greenways, we support the whole web of life challenged by humanity’s impact. A great example of such work: KIB eliminated 35 acres of invasives, and began restoring the shores of Fall Creek with the help of Eli Lilly & Company employees.

Dr. Frances Kuo, of the University of Illinois, writes in Parks and Other Green Environments: Essential Components of a Healthy Human Habitat: “While street trees, parks and public green spaces are often regarded as mere amenities—ways to beautify our communities and make life a little more pleasant—science tells us they play a central role in human health and healthy human functioning.” Creating greenspace is another great example of how we are bringing nature back to neighborhoods.

And so, we look to the horizon with you, and with renewed purpose: engaging diverse communities to create vibrant public places, helping people and nature thrive. While it’s great to look back, it’s essential we move forward, together, for Indianapolis!
