Keep Computer Awake During Backup

This PDF illustrates a method to keep your Windows 7 computer from going to sleep during anAcronis TrueImageHome backup.

Overview

Create two special power configurations. AlwaysOn to keep the computer from sleeping; anda Normal power configuration for use after the backup is finished and for routine use.

This AlwaysOn power configuration is activated from the TrueImage Pre/Post pre options viaa command file. TrueImageHome creates a backup with or without validation. After backupcompletion, the Normal power configuration is activated from the Pre/post post optionsautomatically also via a command file.

The first step in preparation is to create the special Normal power configuration.

Goto Start/Programs/Control Panel/Power Options and select the power configuration you usefor normal use. This is probably the configuration already selected except it will probably havea different name.

In this illustration, the power configuration normally used for this computer is titled “Balanced”and this configuration is loaded or active. We will be creating a duplicate of this normally usedplan.

This will cause a text file to be created on drive C:\ PowerPlans.txtBe sure to include the > pipe command sign as you type the command above .Close command window. Browse to drive C:\ and open PowerPlans.txt file in Notepad.

Figure 16From Start Menu/Programs, open an elevated Command Prompt.

Figure 17Open a command prompt and at the prompt, type

POWERCFG /L >C:\POWERPLANS.TXT

Simulated contents of the C:\PowerPlans.txt in Notepad.

Note that two of the listings are the PowerPlans we have just created. Your GUIDnumbers will differ and it is the numbers from your Normal & AlwaysOn which wemust copy from your file. The numbers illustrated in red and green are what must becopied from your c:\powerplans.txt file.

Existing Power Schemes (* Active)-----------------------------------Power Scheme GUID: 381b4222-f694-41f0-9685-ff5bb260df2e (Balanced) *Power Scheme GUID: 823bdbad-e001-48bc-a59d-e6491189af83 (Normal)Power Scheme GUID: a1841308-3541-4fab-bc81-f71556f20b4a (Power saver)Power Scheme GUID: df011ed9-9131-49b9-8090-46963cfb65ce (Battery Saving)Power Scheme GUID: e4d96b56-29e4-4376-8415-9450fdf76c01 (AlwaysOn)

Procedure: Update the C:\TIH-AlwaysOn.CMD file

Your Notepad should now be displaying your C:\PowerPlans.txt file and it should look verysimilar to what is displayed in the preceding Figure 18 except your GUID numbers will differand not have color.

Locate the Power Scheme GUID for the AlwaysOn plan as shown in green above. Use yourmouse pointer and highlite your GUID number for the AlwaysOn plan and copy your GUIDnumber into your clipboard. Close Notepad.

Browse to the C:\TIH-AlwaysOn.CMD file and “open with” your file into Notepad.Delete the existing sample GUID number and paste your GUID number from the clipboard.Your notepad should look just like the Figure 14 except your GUID number should be listedinstead of what is shown in Figure 14.

Important: Save the changes so the C:\TIH-AlwaysOn.CMD is updated with your GUID.

Procedure: Update the C:\TIH-Normal.CMD file

Reopen C:\PowerPlans.txt file with Notepad. Locate the Power Scheme GUID for the Normal plan as shown in red in Figure 18 above.Use your mouse pointer and highlite your GUID number for the Normal plan and copy yourGUID number into your clipboard. Close Notepad.

Browse to the C:\TIH-AlwaysOn.CMD file and “open with” your file into Notepad.Delete the existing sample GUID number and paste your GUID number from the clipboard.Your notepad should look just like the Figure 15 except your GUID number should be listedinstead of what is shown in Figure 15.

Important: Save the changes so the C:\TIH-Normal.CMD is updated with your GUID.

Mid summary: What you have done so far is to create two special Windows 7 power planscustomized for your computer.

The C:\TIH-AlwaysOn.CMD is to be run by TrueImageHome just prior to the backup and willchange your power configuration so the computer will not sleep or hibernate and hard drivewill not shutdown.

Following the backup, TrueImageHome will enable the C:\TIH-Normal.CMD to be run whichwill return the computer power configuration back to its normal power configuration.

To confirm the accuracy of GUID transfer, it would be wise to copy the GUID from bothcommand files back into the C:\PowerPlans.txt file to assure no mixup of numbers.

The next step will be to add the two customized power plans into the TrueImageHomePre/Post options as shown below.

It is preferable that a new task be created and the two command files be added to a newtask–rather than an edited task. Editing a task has been known to produce unexpected results.

Important! After all “Advanced” options have been completed(validation, etc) , do NOT clickthe “OK” button, but click over to the “Backup Scheme” tab and perform whatever adjustmentsare needed (if any) and then click the “OK” button associated with the “Backup Scheme.”

Do NOT activate the SHUTDOWN command which is listed at the bottom of the “Advanced”options tab. The SHUTDOWN command is included in the C:\TIH-Normal.CMD (Figure 19).
