Paul Rusch was born in 1897 in Fair-
maunt, Indiana. He grew up in Louis-
ville, Kentucky. Paul Rusch agreed
because he was very curious. His deci-
sion as a result destined the rest of his
life, but there was no way at that time
that he could know about his own des-
tiny. He was 27 years old then and this
was the beginning of his relation with
Japan. In May 1925 he arrived in Ja-
pan and what he first saw was the
Yokohama harbor in devastation due
to the earthquake. He made up his
mind to leave Japan when the recon-
struction of YMCA Halls was on it’s way
in 1926, but he continued to stay in
Japan as a teaching missionary for
Rikkyo University after he was per-
suaded strongly by his students.
ABOUT PAUL
RUSCH
C A B I N S F O O D
When Paul Rusch returned to Japan after
WWII, he found the people of Kiyosato
eating potatoes and grains reserved for the
animals, as the high altitude of the Yat-
sugatake Highlands makes growing rice
impossible. KEEP introduced dairy farm-
ing with imported Jersey cattle from
American donors. The milk produced
on the farm was distributed free of
charge to local schools as part of
KEEP's outreach to the region.
