Kibaha Education Centre was established in 1970.

The fundamental Objective for its establishment

was to fight against the three great enemies of the

National Development as priority identified by the

Government of Tanzania from the Day of

Independence in 1961.

The establishment was, in fact, a result of the

grand cooperation rendered to Tanzania by the

Nordic countries namely Denmark, Sweden,

Finland and Norway.

The three objectives for the establishment of KEC are dealing with fighting against the enemies that hinder development. These are Ignorance, Poverty and Diseases.

Fighting against Ignorance:

Implemented since 1970 by offering both Primary and Secondary Education. While in 1970 the capacity of Primary School was 300 pupils in 2010 it has risen to 960.

Fighting against IgnoranceFor Secondary Education from 1970 the number of pupils has tremendously increased from 120 to 1,515 in 2010.

Therefore, up to the year 2010, a total of 9,840 students and 11,597 pupils successfully completed primary and secondary education respectively. Most of those who had completed in our secondary schools joined Universities and are currently heading different leadership positions in our country.

Either, the Centre operates a Public Library which provides services throughout the week to both KEC community and the neighbouring villages.

9

Fighting against Ignorance In addition, the Open University of Tanzania utilises this Library for registration of students and for administering examinations. Generally, about 3,000 people benefit from the services provided in this Library.

10

Fighting against Poverty

This aim has been attained through the provision of both theoretical and practical knowledge offered by the Kibaha Folk Development College, Poultry and Dairy Farms.

Dairy Farm

In 1970, the KEC aimed at keeping cattle up to 500. However, this aim has not been attained.

On the other hand, the centre has achieved to provide education on Diary Farming to both peasants and students from Higher Learning Institutions such as Sokoine University of Agriculture, Liti-Tengeru and Mati-Uyole.

About 70 peasants get Animal Farming knowledge per year.

15

Dairy Farm

The farm provides both Temporary and Permanent Employment to people surrounding KEC, this helps to curb the problem of unemployment in the country.

The milk produced is used by KEC workers while the surplus is sold to other people outside KEC for both improving the Nutritional Standard and being sold by small scale traders. The average amount of milk sold per year is 100,800 litres.

16

Fighting Against Diseases

In implementing this aim, KEC has been providing preventive education and cure/treatment through the then Tumbi Health Centre, currently known as Tumbi Special Hospital. Either, there is a Nutrition Centre and the Clinical Officers College which formerly was known as Rural Medical Assistants College.

Page 17: Kec Historical Background

Fighting Against Diseases There has been advancement in the capacity of admitting patients. For example, in 1970, the then Tumbi Health Centre could admit only 35 patients while today it can admit in 253 daily.

The number of patients has been increasing yearly. For instance, in 2009, a total of 856,972 patients were served compared to 609,531 in 2007.
