Kearsarge Regional Ecumenical Ministries (KREM)
Annual Report
January 1 - December 31, 2018
Submitted March 11, 2019
New London, NH 03257
Kearsarge Regional Ecumenical Ministries (KREM) is a 501(c)3 non-profit volunteer ministry. KREM was initially established in 2001, with funds from an anonymous donor, by five New London, NH churches as a shared ecumenical effort. KREM’s focus, through its volunteer Board Member efforts, remains “meeting the emergency needs of people in the Kearsarge/Sunapee region when other services are unavailable”. KREM’s member churches have undergone a change this year: United Church of Warner (UCW) has joined New London’s First Baptist (FBC), Kearsarge Community Presbyterian (KCPC), Our Lady of Fatima Roman Catholic (OLF), St. Andrew’s Episcopal (SAEC), Elkins Chapel (EC), and First Congregational Church of Wilmot (FCCW). Sadly, one of the founding churches, First Church of Christ Scientists (CSS), is no longer with us. KREM welcomes the participation of other churches in our service area. KREM’s Kearsarge/Sunapee service area includes 11 towns. These are Andover, Bradford, Danbury, New London, Newbury, Salisbury, Springfield, Sunapee, Sutton, Warner and Wilmot. Assistance provided in 2018 to clients in each town is illustrated in Figure 1 (attached) “2018 Total KREM Assistance Payments By Town”. Since 2008 KREM has provided over $429,000 in emergency assistance to those in need when other services were not available. The distribution of support for those years is illustrated in Figure 2 (attached) “Total KREM Assistance by Town 2008-2018”. KREM functions because nineteen outstanding volunteer Board members donate their time and talents to continuously improve KREM’s ability to meet the emergency needs of our clients. This contributes to KREM’s low operating expense (3%), preserving 97% of income for client assistance. In 2018 KREM Churches and Board Stewards responded to over 188 specific client requests for assistance (143 in 2017) from more than 117 area households (109 in 2017). One hundred separate families received support. Despite a strong economy, client assistance expenses, $55,600, were significantly more than in 2017 ($40,600), even topping the previous peak of $53,200 in 2014. This seems to confirm the statement made by the Federal Reserve in 2018 that 40% of Americans, when faced with a $400 emergency bill, have to borrow money or sell something to pay the bill. In our 11 towns, KREM and Loaves & Fishes are the third and fourth alternatives. Despite this uptick in need in 2018, KREM continues to be blessed with remarkable generosity from local churches, groups, and individuals. The highest need in KREM’s history ($55,000) was offset by record income in 2018 ($64,600). Details are provided in the Treasurer’s Comments and in Figure 3 (attached) “KREM Income vs. Client Assistance”.
KEARSARGE REGIONAL ECUMENICAL MINISTRIES PO BOX 1465
NEW LONDON, NH 03257
Teamwork to meet client needs continues. Besides working with our member churches and area Town Welfare administrators, KREM partners with Our Lady of Fatima’s Loaves and Fishes assistance efforts, area Community Action groups, church Wood Ministries at KCPC and FBC, the Thanksgiving Baskets Committee, The Kearsarge Lake Sunapee Food Pantry, WishListNH and several area heating fuel, electrical energy and auto repair suppliers. This teamwork keeps houses warm, lights on, and vehicles running. Clients know they are not alone when emergencies strike. KREM Stewards continue their effort to get clients to apply to their Town Welfare Departments for assistance whenever a client’s circumstances permit. Stewards also try to maintain the best possible working relationships with Town Welfare Officers and Community Action Program staff. KREM believes this serves both the needs of the client and the interests of the Towns. It remains KREM policy to limit individual/household assistance in any 12-month period to $1,500. Except in rare circumstances, KREM does not provide rent or mortgage assistance. All client-related information is shared only as directed by the client and is held in strict confidence by KREM. An "Application for Assistance" form is completed for each case, but that information, and a confidential card file and electronic database entry for each client request, is available only to KREM Stewards and Officers. These tools enable the KREM stewards on duty to rapidly review a client’s support history and confirm their eligibility for additional assistance. Stewards work as a two-member team each month, and assistance decisions are made as a team. When KREM stewards and officers meet each month, we discuss cases from the summaries of the previous month. These are the same summaries distributed to the pastors of member churches. We have pared down the write-ups so that client confidentiality is maintained. More detailed information is recorded on the cards and the AfAs. Our KREM manual continues to be a work in progress. In doing their work, KREM stewards are still discovering government agencies, non-profits, volunteer organizations, and faith-based groups that make up the NH safety net. An important part of our job, after all, is to educate our clients about how they can help and advocate for themselves. So our job is not just to pay bills. The KREM Board is fortunate to have 19 talented volunteer Officers and Stewards (an increase of 2 from last year), who all believe we are only doing what is expected of us as followers of Christ. We are blessed! The KREM Board humbly expresses its heartfelt gratitude to its member churches and the Kearsarge/Sunapee community organizations and individuals who make possible this work of assisting people. As a community, we are sending the transformational message that our clients are children of God, worthy of our love and support. Respectfully submitted, Allan MacDonald, Chairperson

KREM 2018 ANNUAL REPORT
TREASURER’S COMMENTS Client assistance payments in 2018 totaled $55,600 despite a relatively strong economy, far more than the $40,600 required to meet client emergency needs in the prior year. Fuel assistance in 2018 accounted for the lion’s share (33 percent). Assistance with electric bills (25 percent) and auto-related assistance (11 percent) were also significant with the balance being comprised primarily of assistance with telecommunications expenses (8 percent), housing-related needs, groceries, and gasoline. Administrative costs, including our KREM phone, totaled $1,700 (3.0 percent of total expenses).
Contributions in 2018 totaled $64,600 comprised of $23,500 (36 percent) in pledges from our eight supporting-member churches, $11,600 of other supporting- member church donations (18 percent) including $3,000 from the Women of Kearsarge Community Presbyterian Church, $10,400 in gifts from individuals and families (16 percent), and $19,100 in contributions from other non-profits and businesses (30 percent). Latter category donors included private family foundations, Loaves & Fishes (cost-sharing contributions); Sunapee Region Board of Realtors, Inc.; NL Hospitality Holdings, LLC (Thursday’s Child dinner); New London Service Organization; Odd Fellows, Fidelity Charitable Gift Fund; and the towns of New London and Springfield.
The $64,600 of income in 2018 eclipsed the $46,300 of 2017, but, as noted above, emergency needs increased significantly also from $40,600 in 2017 to $55,600 in 2018. Healthy account balances carryover from 2017 into 2018 ($48,500 in total) enabled KREM to finish the 2018 year with a very healthy $55,800 account balance total, enough to likely meet the emergency needs of clients for most, if not all, of 2019.
KREM financial activity over the course of 2018 included issuing over 200 payments to 70 different vendors, issuing 77 vouchers to clients for groceries and vehicle fuel, and making over 52 bank deposits. Our KREM federal Form 990-EZ for 2017 was timely filed in early February of 2018 as was our required 2017 Annual Report Certificate filing with the New Hampshire Office of the Attorney General Charitable Trusts Unit. Bank accounts were reconciled monthly, and monthly and annual financial statements and reports were produced and issued.
Respectfully submitted,
William J. Doody Treasurer
