High-performance networking as a tool
To facilitate international collaborations in research and education
To enable sharing of expensive/scarce resources (telescopes, microscopes, …)
To provide access to scientific materials and databases
To enable one-way and multipoint telepresence (medical activities)

Indiana University – KDDI-America Partnership in Asia
The current TransPAC2 connection to Asia is funded by the US National Science Foundation and our partners in Japan. KDDI-A has been the long-term provider of TransPAC2 connectivity.
The Indiana University – KDDI-America partnership is quite strong. Our NOCs cooperate well together. KDDI-America provides excellent hands/eyes service for IU in Los Angeles.
The next 18 months…
The IRNC program, which funds the TransPAC2 network, will continue until at least 1-January-2010. Depending on the timing of a new IRNC-2 solicitation, IRNC-1 may be extended until 1-January-2011.
There are plans for a new IRNC-2 solicitation at some time in 2009. Indiana University, Internet2 and APAN will surely partner in responding to this solicitation. This will require a new RFP for a new set of services.
IRNC-2 Issues
• Current bandwidth is sufficient
• Bandwidth needs to be allocated more effectively and dynamically
• Security and performance measurement will be more important.
