SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 25 Celebration of Lights5:30 PM to 7:00 PM Start the holiday season off right at the Celebration of Lights Festival, a family-oriented event featuring a myriad of sparkling lights, festive decorations and a visit from Santa. Families will have the opportunity to enjoy a variety of entertainment from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the Batavia Riverwalk. Join in a community sing-a-long with Batavia business owner Craig Foltos, who will play the master of ceremonies until Santa arrives at 6:00 p.m. Mayor Jeff Schielke will greet Santa and together they will light the com-munity Christmas tree. After the tree light-ing, Santa’s Warming House (located at the Peg Bond Center) will
open, and children up to age 10 who visit with Santa will receive a special gift while supplies last. The festival is presented by the Bata-via Park District in partnership with the Batavia Chamber of Commerce, Batavia
Main Street, the City of Batavia and the Batavia Police Department. For more information, please contact the Batavia Park District office at 630-879-5235 or view the schedule of events atwww.bataviaparks.org.

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 7 Holiday cheer fills the winter air as Geneva prepares for its annual Christmas Walk, December 7 and Christmas House Tour, December 7 – 8 On Friday and Saturday, five charming homes shine in holiday splendor and open their doors to visitors for self-guided tours. The personality of each home will illumi-nate when local decorators and landscapers work with homeown-ers to create holi-day magic. Our homes for 2012 include historic, modern and traditional. From a 7000 square foot beauty to a historic home, completely restored to be a
“green home”, all five homes are sure to please and leave you with festive decorat-ing ideas. A holiday tea and a take away idea book are included in your ticket price of $30. Proceeds from the house tour are used to transform downtown Geneva into holiday spectacular. The homes may change each year, but Geneva Chamber’s commitment to pres-ent an exceptional house tour stays the
same. Pre-orders for tickets can be placed by calling Geneva Chamber at the number below Friday evening, amongst the twin-kling lights and fresh greenery lined streets, chestnuts are roasting over open fires, carolers are filling the night air with seasonal favorites and a live nativity scene is taking place. Dazzling window displays brimming with gift ideas invite shoppers to stroll through shops as merchants serve traditional holiday refreshments setting the stage for the annual welcome to the holiday season, Geneva’s Christmas Walk. Beginning with the horse-drawn
carriage arrival of Santa Lucia, the Swedish symbol of the season, to the young and young at heart waiting with anticipation as Santa Claus arrives and the Great Tree on the Courthouse lawn is lit, memories and traditions are created in Geneva. Santa and Mrs. Claus will then open their Geneva home for visits from excited children. Let us show you what makes the holi-day season in Geneva special, unique and unforgettable genevachamber.com • 630.232.6060

Directions:In a large bowl, combine the flour, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves, sugar, bak-ing powder and salt and set aside. In another large bowl, whisk together the milk, pumpkin, vegetable oil and egg. Add the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients and stir until everything is just combined, being careful not to over mix. Fold the chocolate chips into the mixture. Heat a griddle or large pan to medium-low heat. Coat the pan with cooking spray. Drop 1/4 cup of batter onto heated skillet. Cook on the first side until the edges begin to bubble, about 2 minutes. Carefully flip pancake over and cook for another 2 to 3 minutes or until golden brown. Continue this process to make the rest of the pancakes, making sure to lightly spray the pan between each pancake to ensure they do not stick. Serve the pancakes immediately with maple syrup and butter, if desired.

(BPT) - With the holidays drawing close, your home will soon be the center of attention when entertaining guests from near and far. From creating a festive atmosphere to feeding friends and family, it’s important to plan ahead for a hassle-free holiday season everyone will enjoy. Make this season’s party planning less stressful and costly with these simple tips. Decorate in a snap: Fill decorative clear glass jars with seasonal hard candies and treats such as candy canes, Christmas tree-shaped gum drops and red and white peppermints. Place jars either in a group or individually on an entryway table, fireplace mantle or end table. You can also use taller glass jars and fill them with pine cones, ornaments, fresh cranberries or ever-green branches for a more natural holiday look. Either way, these easy, inexpensive decorating tricks. Keep it simple: Why not host a wine and cheese party instead of a sit-down meal? This type of party allows guests to mix and mingle freely, is budget (and waistline) friendly and requires little prep time so the host can enjoy the party and visit with guests. Set out a few wine, cheese and fruit pairings for guests to sample. Place cards identifying the combina-
tions make good conversation starters too. Wow your guests when you open the wine with the SKIL iXO Vivo Power Corkscrew, the cordless screwdriver equipped with a corkscrew attach-ment, foil cutter and wine stopper. This handy tool makes popping open a bottle of wine as easy as tightening a screw which, by the way, it can also do. Evaluate your space: Providing enough space for you and your guests to move around will contribute to the success of the party. No one likes to fight their way across the room to greet a friend or when they accidentally knock over a wine glass with the slightest movement. Rearrange or remove furniture to provide a bet-ter flow throughout the space during the party, while still considering seating, serving and clean-up areas.
Pay attention to details: Make sure your home is welcoming when family and friends arrive. Keep front walks free of snow and ice, arrange evergreen branches in a large planter with a landscape light or two and place on the porch, or set an attractive basket with a folded towel at the bottom near the door to hold guests’ wet boots. Simple steps like these will make sharing your home more enjoyable and your guests feel welcome.
Make holiday entertaining a breeze

Many Christmas traditions are older than some celebrants might think. The tradition of lighting up a Christmas tree, for example, dates back to the days before Christmas lights. Before electric-powered twinkle lights were invented and even before electricity was discov-ered, people used actual candles to adorn the Christmas tree. As one can imagine, having an open flame next to a dried-out tree was risky, so it was custom-ary to keep a bucket of water next to the tree in the case of fire. As if fire wasn’t enough, the tinsel used to decorate trees was made from strips of silver and even lead -- something that is now known to be a health hazard to adults and children alike. Although we’ve come a long way since candles and lead, even now trees that are overly dry and decorated with lights that have frayed wires can
just as easily lead to fires. Plus, plastic tinsel can be a choking hazard for children and pets. One Christmas staple that has lost its status as a safety hazard is the poinsettia plant. It has long been thought that poinset-tias are poisonous to people and animals. While there is some toxicity to the plant, it would re-quire the ingestion of hundreds of leaves to get a toxic dose of a plant’s poison.

(BPT) - With trees dressed in fall finery and homes adorned in holiday hues of silver, gold and red, fall and winter are colorful times. This year, why not ‘green’ your holiday by adopting some eco-friendly traditions? From making holiday meals with organic ingredients to wrapping gifts in recycled paper, it’s easy to find ways to celebrate the season and be kind to Mother Nature at the same time.Earth-friendly feasting Americans are embracing organic foods for many reasons, from better taste on their plates and improved health in their homes, to the gentler
impact on the environment associated with the production of organic produce and meats. If you’ve never tried organic dining before, give your family - and the earth - the gift of going organic this holiday season. And if you prefer organic foods throughout the year, there’s no need to set the habit aside just because of the holidays. From main dishes of responsibly raised poultry and line-caught fish, to side dishes of sustainably grown vegetables and grains, it’s easy to serve a holiday meal that’s good for your family and the environment. Companies like Simply Organic offer options for every aspect of holiday feasting, including mixes for gravies, dips and dressings, organic spices, flavorings, extracts and sauces. You can find holiday-appropriate organic products and recipes at www.simplyorganic.com.Decorating with heart Some traditional holiday decorations can be less than friendly for the environment, but a cut tree is not necessarily one of them. Con-sider that the production of artificial trees consumes large quantities of resources and creates wasted by-product. Also, keep in mind most tree lots sell trees raised on farms, so natural forests are not impacted by the tree you buy off the lot. When it comes time to dispose of your tree, consider mulching it yourself, rather than just setting it out on the curb. What would the holidays be without bright lights? But those little bulbs can consume lots of energy. Switching to LED lights will reduce the amount of power it takes to keep your home twinkling brightly this holiday season. And a bonus of LED lights: they last longer, so you won’t have to buy new strands every season.
Great ways to ‘green’ your holiday season

Online shopping has expanded considerably in the last several years. Although Black Friday and its online counterpart, Cyber Monday, may seem like the best times to gain the lowest prices on merchan-dise, it actually could pay to wait a little longer. Merchants may offer deep discounts on premium items that haven’t moved during the last days of the holiday shopping sea-son, typically between December 21 and 24. This includes big-ticket
products, such as fine jewelry, furniture and televisions. It is pos-sible to take advantage of deep price cuts the closer you get to Christmas Day. Keep in mind that you may have to pay a premium for getting those gifts delivered on time, which could offset the savings. Therefore, it might be a wise idea to present gift recipients with a photo of what they will be getting for the holidays and deliver the item a day or two later.
