GENERAL SALE INFORMATIONTerms and Conditions: This sale is conducted under the standard terms and conditions adopted by the American Simmental Association. If you have any questions, please contact us. In no instance shall the seller be responsible for more than the purchase price of the bull.

Registration Papers: Registration papers will be provided upon request to those who want them. Please let them know in the sale offi ce.

Feeding Arrangements: If you are unable to take your bulls home on sale day, we will feed them until April 20th, at the cost of $1.50 per head per day. We are not responsible for accidents on the bulls brought back to the ranch; therefore we encourage you to insure your purchases before they are sent back home with us. The bulls that we take home to feed will be put in with our bulls and cared for in the same manner.

Trucking: $30 discount for those that haul their bull(s) home on sale day. If the purchaser requests after the sale, we will assist in making delivery arrangements. We will only deliver bulls to central locations within a 200 mile radius of Mandan.

Health: All animals have been vaccinated three times with Vision 7/Covexin 8, Virashield 6 +/- Express 5 + Haemophilus somnus, Pulmoguard-PMH, Mycoplasma and Clostridium type A. They were treated for internal and external parasites with an avermectin and Safeguard. The entire herd has been enrolled in the ND Voluntary Johne’s Certifi cation Program and whole herd tested three times with no Johne’s disease detected in the herd.

Scrotal Circumference: Scrotal circumference and ultra sound data information will be available sale day or on our website (kbhrsimmental.com) prior to the sale.

Feeding Program: These cattle have had no creep feed. They were weaned onto a high roughage diet. The starting diet consisted of chopped hay and corn silage. Then we slowly added rolled corn and distillers grain to their ration. They have been on a TMR ration which included Hubbard’s Grain Rite consisting of chelated minerals and vitamins.*Our goal is to have the bulls gain an average of ~3.5 lbs per day in order to maintain structural soundness. The carcass date we’ve received back from feeders has been very favorable!

Greetings Friends and Fellow Ranchers All!

We are happy to welcome you to our 15th annual production sale!

We started in Simmental cattle in 1982. That’s was one of the best moves I made when I got out of college.

Most of you know that Dad passed away just before this past Christmas. The role that my Dad played in making this sale and every sale we’ve had before, is that he stood by and supported my decision to use Simmental genetics in our cow herd.

The cattle look great and performed better than ever this year! Some of the calves were hauled 100 miles before they were weaned, which affected their weaning weights. The heifers we’re offering for sale this year are by far the best set ever. It is a good year to buy heifers with the cow numbers the lowest since 1952. We are in for some good years in the beef business.

We fed the bulls and the heifers the same ration we always have and they’ve had no creep feed, as usual. They gained better because of the mild winter… and we’d like to believe due to our use of Simmental genetics. The steers we’ve sent to feedlots in the past 3 years have reportedly gained right at 4 lbs/day average. We’ll ultrasound the bulls about 2 weeks before sale day so results will be as accurate as possible. The results will be posted on our website (kbhrsimmental.com) before the sale.

You’re invited to stop by the ranch and view the cattle. Visitors are always welcomed. The cattle look better in their natural environment and we appreciate that you may want you to see how they are fed and cared for, and view the cow herd and our newest herd sires.

Eugene Keller, our beloved Husband, Father and Grandfather passed on to be with the Lord on December 4, 2011. Eugene was born June 2, 1925 to David and Olga Keller. Eugene was married to Helen Boeshans June 3, 1946. They farmed with Eugene’s father, north of Beulah, where they raised their fi ve children. In 1978 they moved south of Mandan, ND to the Huff Hills area. There he and his family continued farming and ranching and expanded the operation to what is now the Keller Broken Heart Ranch. Eugene was in the United States Navy during World War II, on the USS Harmon serving in the Pacifi c Theatre. There he met his lifelong friend, Edward Kniola from Chicago. Throughout his life, Eugene’s family was his pride and joy. He loved spending quality time with children, grand children, and extended family. One of Eugene’s other passions in life was working on his farm and ranch. He loved spending time outdoors, whether it was proudly riding his favorite buckskin horse, Tucker, baling hay, chopping corn silage, or feeding and milking cattle. He appreciated nature and was a true steward of the land and livestock under his care. Dad always liked working with horses and cattle the best when he was young. He was the one in his family that took care of the horses and he fed and harnessed them. I remember him talking about driving cattle with horses to the railroad at Beulah. They sold yearlings one year and got $15 per head.

Dad spent his entire life on the farm and ranch. He started with horses, then to tractors and no till and now GPS systems. But despite all the new technology, he said life was so much simpler back then and not as fast paced….and not so much to worry about. He talked about how they bundled up the family in a horse drawn sled when he was younger, just so they could go visit with some neighbors. Dad saw a lot of change in his life and yet in the end he wished he could still be out there helping us cut corn or riding his horse and sorting cattle.

Luke remembers when he and Grandpa checked cows together when he was about 8 yrs old. A bull was lame and they argued all the way home who that bull was. Luke asked his Dad and it turned out Luke was right. Grandpa simply said, “ Luke, you are going to be one hell of a cattleman someday….. and now I have to go and eat some crow!”

Eugene was a man of strong moral character. He loved telling true stories from the past and had a way of capturing the attention and respect of his audience. Eugene was also a man of deep faith; though he and his family faced many hardships, he always trusted the Lord would see them through. Mom (Helen) was always Dad’s right hand and farmed and ranched with Dad until the end of his life.

He served as a 4H Leader, Commander of the VFW post and a member of the Beulah School Board for 25 years. He was a founder of the Mercer County Landowners Association, the Mercer County Fair Board and the Beulah Rodeo Association (they started the fi rst High School rodeo in ND). He always made time for deer hunting and the annual sausage making event. Eugene also appreciated good food, especially Mom’s German dishes. Eugene lived life to the fullest and left behind many fond memories his family and friends will forever treasure.
