The reason is that when we Baptists lose a pastor we get very anxious and want to get another one as quickly as possible. Our conversations with one another in our meetings and casual encounters is “Pastors we have known and Pastors we want to know.” Some of the conversations are laced with tears of grief ― some with smiles of relief. All are filled with hope that the next one will be the one who will lead us straight to the pearly gates without so much as a pause to catch our breath. Therefore, let’s role the dice and jump in. Surely, God will send us the one he has selected already and we can get on with our proper business. There is something about that approach that is attractive to me. I am not offended to believe that God knows the kind of minister we need. I am not offended to believe that casting lots to make decisions is Biblical. I do have a problem with our forgetting that we must be responsibly involved in choosing and calling our next pastor. I also know that getting ready for the next pastor is pretty hard work and it starts with asking and answering “Who are we?” It continues with asking and answering “Where are we now?” It ends with asking and answering “Where do we want to be in the future?” In a large church in Virginia a very thoughtful woman asked me why we were “going through all this to get a pastor?” I said there were many reasons, but I liked to explain it like this. If we did not take the time to get over the last pastor and find out who we are without him it would be like marrying on the rebound after a divorce. You are likely to choose someone in response to your last relationship and not someone in response to who you are and what you need. So wisdom says take the time and do the work to get clear about who you are and where you are going. Then, when you meet your potential suitors, you can say, Hello, my name is Knightdale Baptist Church. This is who I am. Would you share with me who you are. I would like to explore with you whether or not it is God’s will that we serve the Lord together as Pastor and People. I expect many of you remember Dr. Garland Hendricks. He was a former pastor at Knightdale in the Baptist Glory days. I followed him at Southeastern. He taught me this. When churches call pastors three decisions are made; one by the church, one by the minister, and one by the Holy Spirit. He further said, “We do not know how the Holy Spirit works, but we do know when the Spirit’s decision has been made. That will be when the Pastor Search Committee is unanimous and excited about their choice.” That day is coming in God’s time. He will send his servant when we are ready for him. We have more work to do to be ready. We have worship to do. We have praying to do. We have talking with each other to do. We have learning to do. We have dreaming to do. I am excited about it. GOD BLESS US EVERY ONE AT THE HEAD OF THIS YEAR 2011. THANK YOU FOR THE JOY OF BEING YOU PASTOR UNTIL YOU GET A REAL ONE. ― Charles Dorman Volume 8, Issue 1 January, 2011

In The Interim Mission and Vision

We have been trying pretty hard to get our attention focused on our church and not on our pastors, past and present. If we did not take

the time to get over the last pastor and find out who we are without him it would be like marrying on the rebound after a divorce. You are likely to choose someone in response to your last relationship and not someone in response to who you are and what you need. So wisdom says take the time and do the work to get clear about who you are and where you are going. Then, when you meet your potential suitors, you can say, Hello, my name is Knightdale Baptist

Church. This is who I am. Would you share with me who you are. I

would like to explore with you whether or not it is God’s will

that we serve the Lord together as Pastor and People.

Meet-n-Eat

The first letters in the Greek phrase “Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior” spell ICHTHUS, or fish. Early Christians used the sign to convey their faith

and avoid persecution. In the gospels, fish are part of several miracles. They also represent people who need to be “caught” for Christ. Today, a fish bumper

sticker is a popular indicator of Christian faith.

Fish

Thank you to your response to the many special opportunities this past Christmas!

• White Christmas • Church in the Woods • CAC Children • Raleigh Rescue Mission

Your response to the needs of the community was overwhelming and meant so much to so many!

Special Thank You

I am the new year. I am an unspoiled page in your book of time. I am your next chance at the art of living. I am your opportunity to practice what you have learned about life during the last 12 months. All you sought and didn’t

find is hidden in me, waiting for you to search it but with more determination. All the good you tried for and didn’t achieve is mine to grant when you have fewer conflicting desires. All you dreamed but didn’t dare to do, all you hoped but did not will, all the

faith you claimed but did not have — these slumber lightly, waiting to be awakened by the touch of a strong purpose. I am your opportunity to renew your allegiance to him who said, “See, I am making all things new” (Revelation 21:5, NRSV).

We are well into the process and are meeting each Saturday. The team is putting together a narrative and data presentation for the church and future pastor search committee. The narrative will include a description of the desired traits of a pastor based on the data obtained in Sept., Oct., Nov., and Dec. The good news is that we are on schedule and perhaps a little ahead of schedule. Subgroups are now putting together data presentations and working on an analysis of Leadership and Connections related to our Church. There is a group working on information gleaned from the congregation on hopes for the future. The Diaconate has been asked to take up the charge of completing work on the Constitution and Bylaws by re-convening that committee. It is suggested that the church begin praying about nominations for a pastor search committee to be chosen in (most likely) January with a recommendation January 23 from the Diaconate.

• An evening session on Wednesday, January 5th is warranted to define a KBC focus and direction in the form of a mission statement to begin a firm description of the church.

• A survey listing of recurring events will be addressed the second Sunday in January (9th) in a questionnaire available during SS and church. Persons will be asked to mark those events they could not live without, and identify those events they think have no place in the KBC mission.

• It is projected that a recommendation to elect a pastor search committee will be presented in the January Church Conference (Jan 16), so that their training and education can begin.

• Two meetings are to be held in the spring: Sunday Evening, February 27 or Wednesday, March 2 and Sunday, May 1 or Wednesday, May 4.

SUMMARY

The charge of the Transition Team in the Intentional Interim Process is to identify issues and problems and pass those tasks off to the persons who must address them. The desired outcome for this process is to give the congregation a strong voice in the:

1. Give the congregation a strong voice in the Organizational Structure of the Church that is Consistent with What We Actually Do.

2. Give the congregation a strong voice in Affirming Recurring Events/Traditions that Support a Mission of the Church Members can Verbalize.

3. Provide the Pastor Search Committee Opportunity to Collaborate on Criteria and Description of the KBC Pastor Profile.

4. Provide the Pastor Search Committee Opportunity to Collaborate of a Concise and Accurate Description of KBC to Verbalize to Pastor Candidates.

5. Establish a 1-2 Year Operational Program and Calendar for KBC that Supports the Mission and Allows the New Pastor Time to Learn About the Congregation and Church Operations.
