2 and gameplay hich elaborated upon the first generations. oeer, the story behind the games remained the sameG Tamagotchis are a small alien species that deposited an egg on 4arth to see hat life as like, and it is up to the player to raise the egg into an adult creature.1<2 The creature goes through seeral stages of groth, and ill deelop differently depending on the care the player proides, ith better care resulting in an adult creature that is smarter, happier, and re5uires less attention. 9ameplay can ary idely beteen models, and some models, such as Tamagohu, re5uire little to no care from the player. Tamagotchi has a large fan base.
 
Tamagotchi ere originally designed for teenage girls, to gie them an idea of hat it ould be like to take care of children.1?2
Gameplay
Hpon actiating the toy, an egg appears on the screen. $fter setting the Tamagotchi unit7s clock, the egg ill iggle for seeral minutes, and then hatch into a small pet. n later ersions, inputting the player7s name and birthday is also re5uired hen setting the clock, and at birth, the  player can name the pet and learn of its family group andEor  gender . The player can care for the  pet as much or as little as they choose, and the outcome depends on the player7s actions. The first Tamagotchis could only be paused by going to set the clock, effectiely stopping the passage of time in the game, but in later models a pause function as included.
Dets hae unger meter, appy meter, and Iiscipline meter to determine ho healthy and ell  behaed the pet is. Filling up the unger meter can be achieed by feeding the pet a meal or a snack. Filling up the appy meter can be achieed by playing mini games ith the pet. 'ini games ary beteen ersions. Iiscipline meter can be filled by pressing the 3scold3 option hen a pet calls for attention but refuses to play or be fed. The pet ill leae droppings around the screen from time to time, and can become sick if they are not cleaned up. "efore the pet goes to the bathroom, it ill make a face and stink lines ill appear around it. f the player actiates the toilet icon during this animation, but before the pet has gone to the bathroom, the pet ill use a toilet instead. When done repeatedly, the pet can be toilet trained.
f the pet gets sick, a skull icon appears ne8t to the pet as it sits still at the bottom of the screen, ith an unhappy e8pression. The pet can become sick for a number of reasons such as oerfeeding of snacks or failing to clean up droppings. The pet can die if sickness is left unchecked. The pet can be cured by pressing the 3'edicine3 option.
Dets ould often fall asleep during the night time. =riginally players had the option of manually turning off the light hen the pet fell asleep. n order to raise a healthy pet, players ere encouraged but not re5uired to turn off the lights hen the pet fell asleep. n recent ersions, the  pet turns off the light on its on hen it ent to sleep. >ecent ersions also allo aking the pet for a short time once it has fallen asleep. V@ had the three children look outside on the indo hen they ake up in the morning and before bed at night.
Life cycle
The pet goes through seeral distinct stages of deelopment throughout its life cycle. 4ach stage lasts a set amount of time, depending on the model of the toy, and hen it reaches a ne stage, the toy plays a Cingle, and the pet7s appearance changes. The pet can 3die3 due to poor care, old age, sickness, and in a fe ersions, predators. The pets life cycle stages are "aby, hild, Teen, and $dult. :ater Tamagotchi models hae added a Aenior model.
Door care can cause a pet to die, but it can also die of old age. f an old pet dies ithout  producing offspring, the family line has ended. The #apanese Tamagotchi toys usually feature a ghost and headstone hen the pet dies, but 4nglish language ersions hae been changed to
 
sho an angel at death, or simply a floating HF= to indicate its return to its home planet. =ften at times it ill sho the transition graphic, after hich it ill sho the pet appearing to be sick,  but ith the skull flashing, beeping as it flashes. t then ill sho a happy ersion of the pet flashing ith a longer beep, ith an egg on the right side of the screen, after hich it ill sho the pet as an angel (as indicated aboe). Dressing the middle button shos the age at hich the  pet died. $fter the pet dies, one can restart from the beginning by pressing $ and .
New mechanics
n recent models, the player earns currency called 9otchi Doints hile playing games, and can use the currency in an in0game shop to buy different foods, toys, accessories, or een room decorations for the pet.
Connectivity
Hsing infrared communication, to players can link their toys and the pets may form friendships,  play games, e8change gifts, and een marry. nfrared connection as introduced ith the DlusEonnection, but the #apanese hou #insei 4nCoy Tamagotchi as the first model to interact ith a computer. Aince then, many subse5uent models hae also been able to interact ith the 40 Tamago or Tamaton ebsites by using alphanumeric codes generated by the toy to log into the ebsite7s Flash game. $fter generating a code, the toy remains paused until the player either enters a logout code or cancels. The player may play minigames in the ton to earn 9otchi Doints, or use 9otchi Doints to buy items in the ton shops. To transfer points and items back to the toy, the player signs out of the Flash game and is gien a code to input back into the toy.
Marriage and family
The 'esutchi and =sutchi Tamagotchis ere the first to introduce marriages and offspring, and the feature returned in the DlusEonnection and subse5uent models. To players ith a male and female pet may link their toys and allo the pets to deelop a friendship and fall in loe. =nce the pets hae raised their relationship meter sufficiently, the pets may marry. The player can also choose to hae their pet marry a random pet brought in by the 3'atchmaker.3 =nce married, the female ill eentually produce to eggs, keeping one and leaing one ith the male. Aince the  parent ill automatically guide the baby7s life, the only care it needs from the player is medicine in the case of sickness. $fter a fe days the parent ill leae, and the player is left to care for a ne generation. This can continue for as long as the player manages to care for the pets. The hou #insei 4nCoy Tamagotchi also introduced the idea of character 3families3 or 3groups.3 These 3families3 are a kind of classification for characters obtainable in the game, grouped mainly by appearance, though they are also associated ith certain skills. $ character of one group cannot gro into an adult of a different group, and if to pets of different groups marry and hae an egg, the baby ill be of the female7s group. Aome characters are only obtainable by breeding certain characters together, and some groups are only obtainable by using a special card for the 'atchmaker.
 
With the many different ersions of the toy, there are other less common mechanics that influence the pet7s groth, including but not limited to friendship ith the player, arying types of skills, and career. The hou #insei 4nCoy Tamagotchi also introduced Akills, hich can be  built by playing certain games ith the pet, or using certain toys or foods bought from the 40 Tamago or in0game shops. aing certain skills can help the pet obtain a career, and if built up high enough, can unlock special characters.
