Q: Can I select my own doctor?

A: Absolutely. You may select a Kaiser Permanente doctor at our brand-new Lihue Clinic or from our network of affiliated primary care physicians. When you select a physician at our Lihue Clinic, you’ll also enjoy the convenience of having primary care, laboratory, and pharmacy services available at the same location.

You don’t need a referral to make appointments for the following services and departments within our network of providers on Kauai:

• Alcohol and drug treatment

• Behavioral Health Services (Mental health outpatient care)

Q: In certain circumstances, why do I have to go to Oahu for treatment?

A: Our goal is to provide you with the highest possible quality of care at the most affordable cost to you. In some cases that may mean recommending you get treated on Oahu where you’ll be cared for by a team of physicians who have access to facilities and equipment which may not be available on Kauai.

If you have to go to Oahu for treatment, our Neighbor Island Concierge service can assist with coordinating your medical appointments. Our concierge can also offer shuttle and ground transportation information, hotel/housing recommendations, along with tips on making the most of your stay. To contact our Neighbor Island Concierge, call 808-432-UFLY (808-432-8359), Monday–Friday, 7:30 a.m.–4 p.m.

For after-hours service while on Oahu, please page a Continuing Care Coordinator through the Hospital Operator at 808-432-0000.

For assistance with your travel arrangements, contact the Travel Department at 1-800-214-6572, Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m.

Q: If I have to go to Oahu for treatment, do I have to pay for the airfare?

A: If the most appropriate course of care requires you to travel to Oahu, we will pay for your airfare.* A Kaiser Permanente shuttle between Honolulu Airport’s Interisland Terminal and Moanalua Medical Center is available to you at no charge (cab fare and car rentals are not covered). Shuttle service is not available on weekends and holidays.

*Specialty and hospital care may be directed and/or transferred to Kaiser Permanente Moanalua Medical Center. Travel coach airfare is paid as a courtesy for qualified Hawaii members upon referral by an affiliated Kaiser Permanente doctor if treatment on Oahu is recommended. Travel restrictions exist for certain conditions.

Q: Where can I fill my prescriptions?

A: You can pick up and refill prescriptions from our Kaiser Permanente Lihue Clinic or any of our affiliated pharmacy locations (subject to our drug formulary). To locate a pharmacy near you, refer to the directory in this member guide or visit kp.org/facilities.

Save time by filling prescriptions using My Health Manager at kp.org/pharmacycenter or the Kaiser Permanente app from the App Store™ or Google Play®. Most prescriptions can be mailed to you at no extra charge. And, if you have prescription drug coverage, you can get a 90-day supply of refills for the cost of 60 days for most medications.

Q: What happens when a prescription is not on the Kaiser Permanente formulary?

A: Drugs not listed on the drug formulary are called non-formulary drugs. For non-formulary drugs, members have three options:

1. Pay full price for the drug.

2. Contact their physician for an alternative formulary drug.

3. Contact their physician for a formulary exception. If the physician determines that the non-formulary drug is medically appropriate and necessary, the physician may initiate the exception process for coverage of non-formulary drugs.

Q: What should I do in the case of an emergency?

A: We cover emergency care from Plan providers and non-Plan providers anywhere in the world. If you think you’re having an emergency, go immediately to the nearest Emergency Department. If you need an ambulance, call 911.

If admitted to a non-Kaiser Permanente facility, you or a family member must notify us within 48 hours after care begins (or as soon as reasonably possible) by calling the phone number on the back of your Kaiser Permanente ID card. This must be done, or your claim for payment may be denied. We may arrange to transfer you or your family member to a Kaiser Permanente facility as soon as it is medically appropriate.

A: You can receive emergency care at any of the following Kauai locations: West Kauai Medical Center, Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital, and Wilcox Memorial Hospital.
