KFC Katlehong, based in Letsoho Mall, has donated R37 500 to Cathula Primary School’s feeding scheme as part of their project of giving back to the community and assisting in hunger alleviation.Anna-Marie Theron, Marketing Manager for KFC said, “We are trying to assist our communities by giving back to the people who are supporting us by buying our product. The donation is part of our project for hunger relief.”Constance Sonqele, a teacher at Cathula Primary School and the chairperson of the school nutrition board said they participated in KFC colouring and sports competitions last year and established a relationship with them. “We requested assistance in terms of our feeding scheme and it was granted. We thank KFC for their support. The money is going to be used for the school feeding scheme in buying cooking equipment, utensils and employing two people who will help with the feeding scheme. We had a challenge of equipment, as there are many needy learners at the school, and we are now relieved,” said Sonqele.

High schools urged to register for debating league

Ekurhuleni high schools are encouraged to register for the 2014 Solid Foundation Debating League. The registration was opened on 3 February and is set to close on 20 March. The league will commence on 3 May and end on 25 May with the finals. This year the Solid Foundation Debating League is targeting 100 high schools from all over the Ekurhuleni metro. Sithembiso Mdlalose, the Tournament Director said that they have partnered with the Wits Debating Union to provide a top quality tournament compared to last year. “The schools that did not receive invitations and application forms from the Department of Education in the Ekurhuleni region, but they can get them through contacting our organisation representatives. The league invites 5 speakers to the round robin debates. It can be a combination of the juniors and seniors (Grade 7-12) debaters. However, if a school has two separate teams the juniors and seniors should inform the

league representatives in advance. This is because seniors are allocated 8 minutes for speeches, with 4 minute response speeches. The junior’s speeches are 7 minutes with 3 minute response speeches.”The debaters are required to wear their school uniforms during the league. There will be four prepared motions for the entire weekend. Schools need to be accepted in the tournament via registration in order to receive the prepared motions. Each school is required to provide a person willing to function as an adjudicator for their school, for which training will be provided. He added that they are appealing for assistance in terms of running the league. Mdlalose said people can sponsor any form of donation, such as awards to be presented to the winners, transport, printing, funds and food. For more information regarding the debating league contact Sithembiso Mdlalose at 084 902 3013 or e-mail: [email protected].

Twenty pupils from Cathula Primary School in Katlehong will not walk barefooted or wear torn shoes this rainy season. Amadodana Asewisili from St Paul’s Methodist Church in Credi Section, Katlehong, has donated 20 pairs of school shoes to the underprivileged pupils at the school.Vuyo Hlathi, the head of department of development and social responsibility under Amadodana Asewisili said they have also adopted Zafania Gatshu, an underprivileged grade 6 learner from the school. “We are going to cater for his academic, social and all other needs until he reaches matric. We have donated 20 pairs of school shoes to the needy

pupils,” said Hlathi.Zafania Gatshu said, “I am happy that they are people who care. My mother is unemployed and she has to take care of four children. We have a lot of challenges at home. There are times where we slept without eating a normal meal. I really appreciate their assistance.” Andile Vanqa, the principal of Cathula Primary School said, “I am very excited. On behalf of the parents and pupils who are going to receive the shoes, l would like to acknowledge the support from the church. There was a big challenge of pupils coming to school wearing casual shoes due to the fact that the parents can’t afford to buy proper school shoes.”

Reopening of schools libraries The Sabelani Life Skills Project recently reopened the Abi Nale and Greenfield Primary School libraries as part of helping the learners to improve their reading and spelling skills. The project started late last year and it will soon be expanding across Kathorus area.According to Sylvester Tshabalala, the project coordinator, initially the project distributed food parcels to HIV/Aids orphans but has since grew to become an educational project. “We decided to expose young learners to books at early stages of their lives. We want youngsters to learn the importance of respecting books from a young age,” said Tshabalala. He said they educate the children about the rules involved in borrowing and returning library books. “We have reading clubs in both schools we are working with. Our objective is to erase the reading gap and help to build learners’ vocabulary at a young age. At the end of each trimester learners are requested to write a letter to the author of the book explaining in detail what they have read,” explained Tshabalala. He urged communities to donate books that would be helpful to the learners. Tshabalala promised that before the end of this year they will add another two primary schools in their project. For more information contact Sylvester Tshabalala at 082 585 4848.

Vosloorus police detectives are looking for Bongani Dladla, who is believed to be in his late 30s, for questions regarding the murder of his son, who was found dead and dumped in a house in Hlongwane section, Katlehong on 17 August 2013. The boy was found with bruises, his body burnt and with other signs of abuse. Captain Piet Rossouw, communications officer of Vosloorus Police Station said, “We are appealing

to people with information regarding Bongani Dladla’s whereabouts to contact the police. We believe that he might be around Ekurhuleni. He does not have an ID, but we believe that he is in his late 30s. We also believe that he will help us with information that will lead us to apprehend the suspect who is involved in the killing of his son.”The story of the boy appeared last year on the front page of tame TIMES with the identikit of the deceased. The mother of the child was identified and arrested for child neglect and the charges were later withdrawn by the court. It is alleged that the deceased was staying with his father and stepmother at a Thokoza hostel. The biological mother of the deceased alleges that she took the boy to stay with his father because she was unable to take care of him. She claims that she wanted to see the boy and was told on 12 November 2013 that the child went missing. According to police investigations, a friend of the boy’s father opened a false missing child case at Thokoza Police Station on 11 October. The man was arrested and charged with perjury. The police battled to find photographs of the deceased’s father, until they met a friend who gave it to them. Anyone with any information on Dladla’s whereabouts can contact either Warrant Officer Polane Mokadi at 083 551 5057 or Constable John Lekalakala at 072 623 1447.

A Ford Focus, which was hijacked by four suspects on the run after allegedly robbing SBV security personnel collecting money at Carnival Mall, was recovered in Spruitview.According to Wilfred Kgasago, EMPD spokesman, the suspects are alleged of robbing the security personnel of one money bag, following a shootout. The suspects took off in a white VW Polo. “A lookout for the white VW Polo with the four suspects was broadcasted and both EMPD and SAPS members started searching for the vehicle. A short while after the robbery, the fleeing suspects hijacked a grey Ford Focus in the area and abandoned their white VW Polo sedan,” said Kgasago.EMPD Intervention Unit members spotted the hijacked Ford Focus vehicle with two male occupants on Leondale Road in Spruitview and gave chase. The suspects realised that the metro police were hot on their heels and they abandoned the Ford Focus and disappeared into the area. The recovered vehicle was taken to the SAPS Van Ryan Deep pound. All four suspects are still at large.

A 33-year-old man broke into a house in Brakpan and stole appliances, clothing and groceries estimated to be worth approximately R40 000. It is alleged that the suspect called his friends under the pretext that his aunt was moving out of the house and needed a vehicle to transport goods and clothing. The unsuspecting friends assisted the suspect to load the stolen property into their VW bakkie and headed to Vosloorus. The EMPD Community Liaison Unit members stopped the vehicle and confronted them at the intersection of Barry Marais and Heidelberg Road. The police found a plasma television set, a Sony home theatre, a brand new bicycle, blankets, clothing, cutlery and food removed from the refrigerator, to which the suspects could not give a satisfactory answer as to why they were in the vehicle. The main culprit confessed to the housebreaking. The suspect was arrested and charged with possession of stolen property at D awn Park Police Station. He is expected to appear in the Vosloorus Magistrate’s Court.

People have different ways to show affection to the people they love. In some relationships people show their partners love on Valentine’s Day only, while others express love for the whole month of February. For others still, every day is Valentine’s Day.In the Bible it says it is very important to love, as love comes from God. It further says we should love people unconditionally, and love our neighbours as we love ourselves. The following verses emphasises the importance of love: John 3:16, Matthew 22:37-39, 1 Corinthians 13:4-1, and John 4:16.It is very important to love and be loved. Happy Valentine’s Day and God bless you all.

People urged to collect deceased’s bodies Charity Moyo

[email protected]

Natalspruit Hospital is appealing to all to claim the bodies of their deceased loved ones who have passed away at the hospital.Nkosiyethu Mazibuko, communications officer of Natalspruit Hospital said, “We are once again requesting people who have patients who passed away at Natalspruit Hospital to come forward and collect

their bodies. We also urge the people to work with us as some of the bodies have been at the hospital mortuary for a long time. On the failure to collect or claim the bodies, they will be buried as paupers. If the deceased is buried as a pauper it will be difficult for their graves to be identified when the family needs it. We do not have enough space at the

hospital mortuary to accommodate the deceased bodies that are not being collected.”The following are the bodies of p eople waiting to be claimed at Natalspruit Hospital. We include the hospital number, patient name, gender and age for easy identification by family or relatives:

Mayor launches R101 million community development project

Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor, Clr Mondli Gungubele recently launched the R101 million Lungile Mstshali Community Development Project in Germiston. The project, which is the first of its kind, will see each ward in the city receiving R1 million for the community to spend in developmental projects of their choice.Speaking at the launch, Gungubele, who pronounced the intervention during the State of the City Address last year, said the time had come for communities to get actively involved in the development of their communities.“The Lungile Mtshali Community Development Project is a ward-based project aimed at creating jobs and fighting poverty in the region,” explains Gungubele adding that such projects are pivotal for a municipality that has an unemployment rate of 28.8% - 40%, of which are young people. “This can also be viewed as the city’s intervention to build an active and responsive citizenry in our efforts to fast-track service delivery in the region.” The mayor says people must not be misled to think that this is the entire budget for community and infrastructure development in the city, as the metro will continue delivering and broadening services to communities with its annual budget of R30 billion. The Lungile Mtshali Community Development Project has created more than 3 000 jobs in the region. Projects will be centred around energy efficiency, water and sanitation, wetlands rehabilitation and waste management, greening and landscaping.“Some people may think that the amount is not enough. However, for us it is not about the money but the intervention of building active and responsive citizenry who will be able to deal with the developmental issues of their areas, while at the same time addressing the scourge of poverty. This project allows our people to get directly involved in the upkeep of their areas and learn critical skills that will take them off the streets in the future,” Gungubele continues, adding that the city will continue allocating the R1 million per ward for the next three financial years starting this year.Qualifying projects are intended to serve as a catalyst for skills growth, poverty alleviation, job creation and urban renewal, says the mayor.Lungile Mtshali is a former councilor of Ekurhuleni who passed on after a short illness in 2010. At the time she was a member of the mayoral committee for finance. She was known to be a servant of the people who was always at the forefront of the community’s needs. Just before she passed, looking at poverty levels in the city, Mtshali had initiated a community development project known as the R1 million per ward, which was later officially named by the City of Ekurhuleni as the Lungile Mtshali Developmental Project – in her honour.

“I remain confident that more jobs are going to be created by

this programme,” ~ Gungubele concludes.

Seven Katlehong primary schools, namely Sonqoba, Lungisani, Chivirikani, Vumbeni, Abram Hlophe, Katlehong and Realeboha Primary School, took part in the Stream E Athletic Competition recently held at Hunters Field Stadium. According to the Development Officer for Ekurhuleni South District Athletics Committee, representative Thulas Sibeko, 140 top performing young athletes from stream E managed to proceed to the next stage of the competition. “They now belong to the same group with their counterparts from stream F. They will be competing against each other on 18 February in Katlehong at Huntersfield Stadium. Successful athletes on that day will be selected to represent Katlehong South at Germiston Stadium on 24 February,” said Sibeko.

He said the best athletes at the 24 February event will automatically be selected to form part of the Ekurhuleni South District Athletics team. They will proceed to the next stage of the competition, where they will compete against the best athletes in the Gauteng Athletics Championship to be held on 28 February to 1 March in Pretoria.“We would like urge parents to encourage their children to take part in the field events (high jump, long jump, shot put and javelin). Lack of sponsorship impacted severely on the growth of the field events in the townships. However, the Central Gauteng Athletics is renowned for organising field events competitions throughout the year and parents should accompany their children in such events. We need sponsors to invest in field events so that we could have a pool of young stars emerging from these various sporting codes,” concluded Sibeko.

140 athletes proceed to the next stage

Aspiring athletes battle it out at Hunterfield Stadium in the Stream E Athletics championship.

The Thokoza Super Kings Cricket Club played against Katlehong Cricket Club at Eden Park Sports Complex recently. Their match started at 9:30 and was dubbed the battle for Kathorus supremacy, which lived up to the expectations of cricket fans. “Our opponents batted first and managed to make 105 runs. My team displayed great commitment when they replied by making 135 runs and won the first innings,” said Thokoza Super Kings player/coach Kagiso Kgoele. In the second innings Katlehong Cricket Club made 69 runs and their opponents responded with 12. The match was stopped due

to time and bad light. “It was a good performance by my team, which is attributed to the good midweek preparations. We won the first innings and drew in the second innings. Joseph Legodi was our star performer. He bowled 14 overs and got four wickets for only 30 runs from our opponents in both innings. Another great performer on the day was Charlie Nkabinde. He made 31 runs out of 78 balls,” said Kgoele. Katlehong Cricket Club batsman Siphiwe Tshabalala said they played against a good team and their opponents were well prepared. “Lack of planning from our side contributed to our downfall. We hope to rectify that mistake in our next match against Delsos Cricket Club at Cecil Payne Cricket Facility in Johannesburg on 16 February,” said Tshabalala. Thokoza Super Kings Cricket Club’s next match will be against Edenglen Cricket Club at Eden Park Sports Complex on 16 February.
