From the President’s Desk…..Honourable Members,

It is really a happy occasion for KARUNA as it enters one more yearof unstinted service towards animals in pain and distress marking atotal of 121 years. This annual report of the Association is for theyear 2007-2008 and for the 11th year in continuity. I place on recordmy sincere thanks to all our members, fellow animal welfare activists, donors, cor porates, volunteers and the general public, for theirwholehearted help and cooperation in the animal welfare activities of KARUNA and funding forspecific programmes.

The animal welfare movement is gaining ground and spreading all over the country and has becomea global movement for the welfare of animals. The movement is catching on even in countries likeChina, Korea etc that had no activism towards animal welfare, are today gearing themselves toprevent cruelty towards all animals in their countries putting an end to age old practices of killingand consuming various animals such as dogs for food.

In India the land of ahimsa, rules and regulations are in place and on paper only, for there stillcontinues the sickening practice of ritual slaughter at places of worship even by the powers that be,not only in our country but the world over! Cruel animal sports such as cock fighting, bear baiting, dog fighting, ram fighting and bull fighting still continue in India as well as the world, touted aspublic entertainment, whereas the pain and gore of these sports, questions our civilized status. Anyamount of humane education and stringent laws has not been of much impact.

The country has many animal welfare activists who have been so for many decades and what isrequired to day is the youth, who though interested, have no time in these days continuing educationand fast track working conditions, giving no room or time to follow the inclinations of the heartto help animals in pain and distress.

KARUNA in its own way is involved in animal birth control operations, though the running isnot smooth, for the local bodies are not serious of their basic responsibilities such as providing astray animal free environment for their tax payers. KARUNA through its humane educationprogrammes of on the spot painting, essay writing and elocution competitions for children of differentage groups, tries to catch them young for building up future animal welfare activists. The childrenare also taken to wildlife conserves to learn about wildlife and also nature conservation. Karuna, has of late an inter and intra state standing, by involving animal welfare organisations in manyof the states of the Indian union where the animal welfare fortnight commemorating Sri BasavaJayanthi, the birthday of Sri Basavanna, the 12th century saint philosopher and social reformer whoraised his voice for the cause of animals. And through its rural welfare programmes caters to draftanimals by means of animal health camps in remote interior villages across the state.

KARUNA has need for more youthful manpower and volunteer force and its committed membersto take animal welfare to grater heights in our state and country.
