Brief Note on the Company

"Company is basically a Government sector. The main motto of the industry

is to serve the national economy and to self-reliance".

KS&DL products are available at affordable price to medium and rich

people. It is selling product of good quality. They are mainly concentrating to

maintain blend loyalty to its customers.

In the early 20th century, the Mysore Kingdom in India was one of the

largest producers of sandalwood in the world. It was also one of the major

exporters of the wood, most of which was exported to Europe. During the First

World War, large reserves of sandalwood were left over because they could not be

exported due to the war. In order to make good use of these reserves, Nalvadi

Krishnaraja Wodeyar, the king of Mysore took the advice of his diwan, Sir M.

Visweshwaraiah and established the Government Soap Factory in Bangalore. This

factory, which was set up in 1916, started manufacturing soaps under the brand-

name Mysore sandal soap using sandalwood oil as the main ingredient. A factory

to distill sandalwood oil from the wood was set up at Mysore in the same year. In

1944, another sandalwood oil factory was set up at Shimoga. After the unification

of Karnataka, these factories came under the jurisdiction of the Government of

Karnataka. In 1980, the Government decided to merge these factories and

incorporate them under a company named Karnataka Soaps and Detergents

Limited. Sharabha, a mythological creature having a body of a lion and the head of

an elephant, was chosen as the logo of the company. This was because the creature

represents the combined virtues of wisdom, courage and strength and symbolizes

the company's philosophy. The company has since diversified and manufactures

incense sticks, talcum powder and detergents; apart from soaps.

By looking back at the history of KS & DL, it was found that the First

World War, did a lot more than raising the dust in India. It dropped the blanket of

gloom business and trading the sandalwood, that earlier went to Europe and then to

other new destinations. It is only by the inspiration of the Maharaja of Mysore the

Late Jayachamarajendra Wodeyar, who turned the threat into the opportunity by

sowing seeds of KS&DL. The new sandalwood factory in the outskirts of the koti

forest near Mangalore. The project took shape with the engineering skills and

expertise of a high Icvd team comprising Sir. M.Vishweshwaraiah, Prof. Watson

and Dr. Suborough.

On 1 st October 1980 the Government Soap factory a public sector industry

was renamed as Karnataka soaps and detergents Ltd". and registered as public

limited company.

With an experience of over 89 years in the industry, KSDL is a true inheritor

of the India's golden legacy. The company is, today, one of the largest producers of

sandal soap, including sandalwood oil in the world with an annual turnover of Rs.

125crores.

In fact, Mysore Sandal Soap, a brand product, manufactured by KSDL, has

been manufactured since 1916 when the king of Mysore set up the Government

Soap Factory in Bangalore. Since then there is no looking back and the company

has been able to live upto its name even today, with the emergence of so many

toilet soaps and detergents in the market. Situated in Bangalore, the company is

equipped with sophisticated infrastructural facilities for production of toilet soaps

and detergents. With an installed capacity of 26,000 tonnes, the soap plant has one

of the largest production facilities in the country. Based on state-of-the-art

technology, our soap flexibility has a unique facility to process as many as 10

different varieties of soaps simultaneously. Till March 2006, our most famous

product, Mysore Sandal soap held a 6500 tonne share among the 450 thousand

tonnes of soap manufactured and marketed annually in India.

Karnataka Soaps & Detergents Limited (KSDL) is one of the leaders

amongst manufacturers and suppliers of quality toilet soaps, detergents, incense

sticks and talcum powder. The company offers its products in a variety of

specifications, such as fragrances, characteristics and properties to satisfy its most

demanding clients the world across. Driven by the belief that quality and

innovation begets leadership, the group is committed to provide superior quality

products and excellent customer service to offer maximum satisfaction to its

clients.

KSDL's Emblem is a mythological creation from the Puranas - Sharabha is

illustrated as the body of a lion with the head of an elephant. The creature

embodies the combined virtues of wisdom, courage & strength and was adopted as

the official emblem of company to symbolize its philosophy.

Mysore Sandal soap held a 6500 tonne share among the 450 thousand tonnes

of soap produced and marketed annually in India. The KSDL's soap factory in

Bangalore that manufactures the Mysore Sandal Soap is one of the largest of its

kind in India having an installed capacity to produce 26,000 tonnes of soap per

annum. KSDL had sales of Rs 1.15 billion (about $ 28.75 million) in the year

2004-2005 with the Mysore Sandal Soap having an average monthly sale of about

Rs. 75 million ($ 1.87 million). Traditionally, the soap has not been marketed in a

high profile manner and only during the year 2006, M. S. Dhoni, the Indian

cricketer was selected as the first brand ambassador of the Mysore Sandal soap.

Other marketing strategies being employed to market this soap include a scheme

where the distributors who meet the targeted sales could enter a lucky draw where

they could win silver or gold coins. About 85% of the sales of this soap are from

the South Indian states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Majority of

the users of this soap are above forty years of age and it is yet to gain more

acceptance by the youth in India. Apart from the regular, Mysore Sandal Soap,

KSDL has also introduced the Mysore Sandal baby soap to target this share of the

market. However, KSDL is facing issues like shortage of sandalwood which has

resulted in the company using only 25% of the manufacturing capacity of its

factory leading to a lesser production of soaps. The main reason for this is the

depletion of sandalwood reserves in the state of Karnataka.

Manufacturing Process

Soap Boiling

In the first step, melted fats are placed in the kettle, and caustic soda solution

is added gradually. The whole mass is then boiled with open steam from perforated

coils within the kettle. The saponification reaction now takes place; the mass

gradually thickens or emulsifies as the caustic soda reacts with the fat to produce

both soap and glycerin.

Soap Drying

In the cold method, a fat and oil mixture, often containing a high percentage

of coconut or palm-kernel oil, is mixed with the alkali solution. Slightly less alkali

is used than theoretically required in order to leave a small amount of unsaponified

fat or oil as a super fatting agent in the finished soap.

Milling

Device that rotates a circular tool that has a number of cutting edges

symmetrically arranged about its axis; the work piece is commonly held in a vise

or similar device clamped to a table that can move in three perpendicular directions

Cutting

In this stage, soap is cut into required shape and quantity or weight

prescribed by the company.
