KarlisOsisKarlisOsis (1917-1997)was a leading figure in parapsychology in thesecondhalfofthetwentiethcentury,notedespeciallyforhisresearchondeathbedvisionsandout-of-bodyexperiences.
EarlyLife
KarlisOsiswasborninLatviaandlivedthroughtheGermanoccupation,beforefleeingtoGermanywhentheRussiansinvadedhiscountry.
He studied psychology at the University of Munich, where he cameacrossJBRhine´sTheReachof theMind andconductedcardguessingexperiments, obtaining significant results. In 1951, he completed adoctoralthesisonExtrasensoryPerception,arareaccomplishmentatthattime.
Osis’s interest in the transcendental and paranormal began with striking experiences that happened to him and tomembersofhisfamily.Hedescribedalife-changingexperienceatthemomentofthedeathofarelativewhowaslivingintheirhouse.
Itwasduskinmyroomwhenithappened.Allofasuddenatremendouswaveofjoy,ofsuchanunusualquality,cameoverme.Ihadnotheardofanythinglikeitbefore.Theroomseemedtofillwithwhitelight;notsomethingbywhichonecanread,but‘light’istheclosestwordIcanfindtodescribeit–livinglight–notonlyintheroombutalsoinme,fillingmeuptomyfingertips.Thenthedooropenedandarelativeannounced,‘Auntiejustdied’.Myexperienceandherdeathweresurelysimultaneous.[1]
ParapsychologicalActivities
Afterthewar,OsisimmigratedtotheUSunderadisplacedpersonprogramandgotajobinatimbermillnearSeattle.AtthistimehestartedcorrespondingwithRhine,whoinvitedhimtohisparapsychologylaboratoryatDukeUniversityinDurham.There,amongotherthings,heconductedananimal-psistudy,attemptingtoinfluenceacattochooseoneoftwoidenticalfoodbowls(theresultswereinconclusive).[2]
AfterafewyearswithRhine,OsismovedtotheParapsychologyFoundationinNewYork,anorganization foundedbymediumandpsiresearcherEileenGarretthatbecameamajorsourceoffundingandeducation.HerehecollaboratedwithMontagueUllmanandDouglasDeanonastudyofESPindreams,helpingtodevelopadifferentmethodologicalapproachtothe‘forced-choice’cardguessingexperimentsbegunbyRhine,whichuntilthenhaddominatedthefield.
Intheearly1960stheAmericanSocietyforPsychicalResearch(ASPR)–previouslyaleaderinAmericanpsiresearch,nowdormantforlackoffunds–revivedbymeansofalargedonationfromChesterCarlson,thefounderoftheXeroxcompany.In1962,OsisstartedtoworkfortheASPRandwassoonappointeditsresearchdirector.Thereheconductedhismostimportantstudies,bothexperimental–forinstancestudyingtheeffectofdistanceonESP–andfieldresearchonspontaneous experience, notably visions at the time of death and out-of-body experiences, the latter in particularcharacterizedbyan innovativeapproachandcreativeuseof technology.Thisworkhelped considerably to revive thereputationoftheASPR.Italsobecamethebasisofhighlysuccessfulfundraising,thankstothequalityandrelevanceofhisresearch,thetrustandlikingthatpeoplehadforhim,andforhisintegrityandhisabilitiesasresearcher.
Osiswasgreatlyinterestedinquestionsofsurvival,of‘other-worldly’experiencesandalteredstatesofconsciousness.Forhim,the‘otherworld’wasneverfaraway,andthisisreflectedinhisstudiesofapparitions,deathbedvisions,mediums,theeffectsofmeditationonESP,andcreativityamongoutstandingartists.WithErlendurHaraldssonhevisitedtheIndianspiritualleadernotedforfeatsof'materialization'SatyaSaiBaba.
His many friends were not only found among parapsychologists, but almost equally among leading scholars ofconsciousness and religious experiences, suchasAldousHuxley andWalterHustonClark and the first researchersofpsychedelicsubstances.Osiswasawelcomeguestattheirconferences.Hecherishedthe‘widerview’andparapsychologywasforhim‘mywindowtosomethingmore’.
OsiswasafoundingmemberoftheParapsychologicalAssociationanditsfourthpresidentin1961.Heregularlyattendedthe PA conventions and presented numerous papers.
