Karen Refugee Committee Newsletter and Activities Report

February, 2013

To,

All the Readers,

Since the emergence of refugees in Thailand in 1974, the Karen Refugee Committee, the civilian leaders' group served as the platform for refugee was formed. This month, we are privileged to report about our election held and practiced which was based on the democratic principles unless the previous elections which rather based on traditional practices and norms as they were fitted into our situation and context.

The election's guideline were written and implemented in 2012 with the help from Technical Support, TBBC (presently known as TBC). Thus, for this term of 2013-2015, our election was based on the new written principles of election, held on 14 February after 39 years of KRC's existence. As it was the first time of holding election based on modern democratic principles, we also faced with many challenges, but the election was held successfully and we now have our new Executive Committee who will be leading seven Karen refugee camps for the next three years.

During the election, 8 former Committee members were re-elected along with 7 new Committee members. The present committee members are:

1. Saw Robert Htway – Chairperson 2. Saw George – Vice Chairperson 3. Saw Bweh Say – Secretary 4. Naw Blooming Night Zan – Joint Secretary 5. Naw Say Say – Finance Advisor 6. Naw June Rose – Education Coordinator 7. Naw Thalei Paw – Health Coordinator 8. Naw Hsar Htoo – Livelihood Coordinator 9. Saw Eh K’ Lu – Affair Coordinator 10. Naw K’ Pru Hser – Affair Coordinator Assistance 11. Saw Tu Tu – Maesariang Branch Coordinator 12. Saw Marshall Aye – Sangklaburi Branch Coordinator 13. Saw John Smith – Ratchiburi Branch Coordinator 14. Naw Say Lweh Wah – ( Resigned ) 15. Saw Ameral – ( Resigned )

Out of 15 Committee members, 7 are women. We are happy that, women are becoming more interested in refugee affairs and dedicate to serve the refugee's cause.

We know that, the people and other supported organizations have a high expectation on us, but we are not able to meet their expectation due to the many circumstances that limited us to work freely. This election was indeed giving us new experience, to test and learn to vote and conduct election in modern democratic way. We hope that in the future, through this free and fair election, we will be able to build a more democratic system in our society and create fairness and justice in our administrative roles.
