What is feng shui and why is it important? Feng shui is about organizing the number one thing in the universe that we are all made of and that is all around us — energy. It is about mindfully creating environments that consistently support you in life. Feng shui is like a nutrition guide for your environment. If you put the right healthy things in it that support you, you’ll live a healthier, happier life. ! Usher new opportunities into your life with feng shui Feng shui provides you with opportunities. For example, I thought I was going to be a landscape architect for the rest of my life. But when I started doing feng shui, suddenly I was freed up to the true flow in life. When you start saying yes to opportunities that come by, your life makes a bold change. Don’t ask, “Where is this going to be taking me?” You have to be willing to go with it or you could be closing the doors of the broad energy that could lead you on an unforeseen path that could be your true heart’s desire. ! Make room for your passion and dreams What are you all about? Is your dream to have a collection of stuff that you never use? Probably not. Hold all that stuff up against your dream. What would you rather have? Space is not nothing. Space is filled with infinite opportunity. Don’t think that space equals nothing. Space is everything. It is potential, unlimited potential. Are you giving up valuable, unlimited potential for something you’ll never use? Think about that. Weigh the value of it. ! Where will you put the love in your life? If you are looking for a relationship or to make a relationship better, make space for it. Most people have the closet and dressers filled. Underneath the his-and-hers bathroom sinks, on his side, it’s full. When you have taken over all the space, there is no room for opportunity. There has to be a nightstand. If there are two matching nightstands, the one closest to the bedroom door would be his. Either don’t have anything in that nightstand or put things into it that you think he would have. Actually make space for him and consider that space is not yours. You will start to gather energy for getting the love of your life. ! Healing problems areas of your home What’s going on in your house or workspace is going on in your life. There are nine traditional “cures” for fixing problem areas. Mirrors, color and disco-ball-type crystals are easy ones. KAREN RAUCH CARTER’S FENG SHUI TIPS

Quick Tips

FOR BUSY WOMEN

! Start at the beginning — the front door The architecturally intended front door of your house is the equivalent of your mouth. All the energy, all the opportunities come through there and are distributed throughout your home. If it’s hard to get from the street to your front door, if people cannot easily find your front door, then it will be challenging to plug into the flow. We need to relay to the universe, “This is where I welcome my energy.” Read the book called A Pattern Language: Towns, Buildings, Construction by Christopher Alexander for tips in there about the language of the front door.

! Feng shui and the healthy home: cut the cords! You can get all your furniture in the right places and all your colors on the wall and still be unhealthy because of the challenges of what people have done to their homes in the last 20 years —WiFi modems, microwave ovens, cordless phones. If you can’t sleep, guess what? You’re in the wire. I like low-tech environments. Cell phones work by radio frequencies. You shield yourself from cell towers outside, but if you have a cordless phone on the inside, you’re creating a situation where you’re microwaving yourself. Be especially careful around beds.

! Arrange your office for success, opportunity and respect For your office, put your back against a solid wall, where you are able to see who’s coming in the door — but not in line with the door. Many people have their desks up against a wall, with 20 inches in front of their face before you hit a wall. The more space there is in front of your face, the more opportunities you’ll have. And you want to be able to see who is coming in and protect your back.
