The Maryland Stem Cell Research Act of 2006 The Maryland Stem Cell Research Act of 2006

Purpose: The purpose of the Act is to promote state-funded stem cell research and cures through grants and loans to public and private entities in the State.

Commission: Established as an independent unit within the Maryland Technology Development Corporation (TEDCO), the Commission will establish criteria, standards and requirements to ensure that stem cell research financed by the newly established Maryland Stem Cell Research Fund complies with state law.

Summary: To date, $56 million and 141 research grants have been funded in the first three years and our fourth year of the program with a budget of $15.4 million.

The Maryland Stem Cell Research Act of 2006 The Maryland Stem Cell Research Act of 2006

Human Stem Cell: Human stem cell is a human cell that has the ability to:

(1) Divide indefinitely;(2) Give rise to many other types of specialized cells(3) Give rise to new stem cells with identical potential.

Including the creation of new stem cell lines.

Eligibility: All Maryland based organizations of all types are eligible for the Grants. Such organizations include public and private, for profit and nonprofit, universities, colleges, research institutes, companies, medical centers and others.
