MARKETING PORTFOLIO

Nearly a decade ago, TECHLAB developed a marketing and sales partnership with Alere. Part of our agreement was for Alere to develop and represent TECHLAB products within their global branding infrastructure.

Upon further evaluation, TECHLAB came to realize that our company was missing out on the value of building and maintaining our own brand identity, both at the product and corporate levels. With this revelation came a new commitment to investing resources into building our brands and telling our stories through our own voice, rooted in science, research, and development and speaking directly to our core audience of clinicians and physicians. Since 2014, TECHLAB has put significantly increased energy into reclaiming our branding and marketing efforts.

This publication presents TECHLAB’s recent brand development and marketing work and is organized by product category. As we do with our diagnostics, we test the results of our marketing and continue to refine and enhance these efforts to deliver ever improving results.

Believing in the Value of Investing in our Brands

From ads to selling aids, TECHLAB has built a powerful marketing engine to support its superior technology. TECHLAB Marketing is responsible for identifying, anticipating, and satisfying customer requirements. The goals of our marketing efforts are to:

• Raise product awareness • Generate product interest • Build product desire • Facilitate product sales, and • Measure results for improved effectiveness

TECHLAB yields measurable results with market share gain, customer retention, brand awareness, loyalty, and trust through multi-channel marketing strategies and tactics. These channels largely include e-mail marketing, print collateral, direct mail, web marketing, tradeshows, advertising, and public relations.

or is it IBD?After the show, TECHLAB sent booth visitors a special mailing containing expanded information on lactoferrin and a fun, promotional item.

AN ENGAGING ENVELOPE enticed recipients to open it.

A REMOVABLE HOLOGRAM MAGNET attached to the front of a brochure changed images and wording upon tilting to compellingly illustrate the question that lactoferrin testing helps to answer.

A MULTI-PAGE BROCHURE provided detailed information on how lactoferrin testing works, its clinical advantages, how to order testing, and scientific publications on lactoferrin. The brochure cover and a sample interior spread are shown here.

FOLLOW-UP EMAILS sent to booth visitors reminded them of our products and provided handy on-line links.

PRODUCT DEMONSTRATION VIDEOS could be watched both at the booth and on-line.

AN UPDATED BROCHURE mailed to booth visitors highlighted TECHLAB’s connection with another well-known product on the cover.

USA TODAY ADVERTISING appealed directly to potential IBD and IBS patients and encouraged them to find out more about our products.

In early 2015, TECHLAB’s marketing team created a new campaign messaging and visual communications strategy for lactoferrin testing products based upon market research findings, choosing to promote “lactoferrin testing” as a brand in and of itself rather than merely promoting the individual lactoferrin products. This new approach allowed us to focus on the application of lactoferrin testing to new markets, such as physicians working with Clostridium difficile (CDI) patients, whereas previously the focus had been limited to IBD and IBS. TECHLAB’s marketing team positioned lactoferrin testing in the market as the reliable choice for getting a first read on intestinal inflammation.

As the only FDA-approved lactoferrin-based tests for intestinal inflammation, TECHLAB moved to capitalize on our unique market position by launching a rebrand of our IBD products. We first chose to rename the products to more prominently feature the lactoferrin biomarker. We also took the opportunity to completely redesign our packaging, establishing a strong, cohesive visual identity for the lactoferrin product line.

UPDATED INSTRUCTION CARDS inside the kit boxes make use of the new visual identity.

A DESIGNATED WEBSITE just for lactoferrin testing allows us to put our new messaging on-line.

REBRAND ANNOUNCEMENTS sent to all of our customers alerted them to the changing look and built anticipation for the new products.

DDW2015 Tradeshow

A POSTCARD MAILER sent to likely show participants ahead of the show introduced our new campaign (front and back of mailer shown here).

FULL PAGE ADVERTISEMENTS placed in the pre-show issues of leading academic journals and the DDW daily newspaper were designed to look like journal question and answer articles.

EXHIBIT GUIDE ADVERTISING also helped to drive traffic to our booth during the show.

TECHLAB’s DDW 2015 tradeshow was the first show to feature our rebranded lactoferrin products. We developed a message highlighting the reliability and non-invasiveness of lactoferrin testing and created a unique and compelling visual metaphor of lactoferrin’s clinical utility to apply to all of our marketing materials.

Q: What is Lactoferrin? A: Lactoferrin is a protein found in activated neutrophils (fecal leukocytes). When there is inflammation in the intestines, activated neutrophils will be shed into the stool. Thus, an elevated level of fecal lactoferrin indicates intestinal inflammation.

Q: What causes intestinal inflammation? A: Intestinal inflammation is caused by many different condi-tions. Two diseases are especially associated with inflammation. Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is the primary cause of noninfec-tious intestinal inflammation and can be difficult to distinguish from other intestinal disorders, especially Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Clostridium difficile disease, also referred to as C. difficile infection (CDI), is the primary cause of infec-tious intestinal inflammation.

Q: What is the role of fecal lactoferrin in diagnosing and managing intestinal inflammation? A: A positive test result for elevat-ed fecal lactoferrin in persons who have tested negative for infectious etiologies should alert the physician to possible IBD. A negative result may signal a functional disorder like IBS, which is non-inflammatory. Levels of fecal lactoferrin correlate with disease activity and may be used as an indicator of mucosal healing. C. difficile disease is complicated to diagnose because the presence of the organism does not always correlate with disease. In many instances, persons who are infected with C. difficile are simply carriers of the organism and do not need to be treated for CDI. Elevated fecal lactoferrin in persons who are positive for C. difficile and its toxins help identify the disease, and can indicate if the intestines have become inflamed. In both diseases, whether found separately or togeth-er (as is often the case), lactoferrin testing aids in determining disease severity and appropriate therapy.

Q: How does lactoferrin testing compare with other technologies? A: Lactoferrin is more stable in feces, exceeding all other FDA-cleared fecal biomarker assays.

Fecal lactoferrin can be accurately measured in specimens with levels remaining unchanged for up to 2 weeks when samples are stored at room temperature or in the refrigerator. This translates into

more reliable testing for intestinal inflammation.

Q: Are these tests reimbursable? A: Yes, lactoferrin testing is covered by most health insurance plans.

As a result of our lactoferrin marketing campaign, product sales increased by 10% in 2015 over 2014.

A FUN CONTEST where delegates had to guess the number of little TECHLAB toilets in a huge container displayed in the main exhibition hall was met with great enthusiasm.

OUR 30-FOOT BOOTH was a show standout and drew big crowds each day. Four connected video screens presented lactoferrin testing information above large lightbox displays. A demonstration counter featured direct access to the lactoferrin testing website, allowing booth visitors to explore the site on their own. The main counter held various support collateral pieces that TECHLAB staff used to further explain the products and that visitors could then take away with them in their lactoferrin testing branded bags. The back wall and coffee table displayed the newly rebranded test kit boxes, allowing staff easy access to them to show prospective clients.

Our new campaign generated a record number of new leads at DDW—more than double that of the previous year.

A FOURTEEN-PAGE BROCHURE included in the DDW registration welcome bag and also made available at the booth provided an overview of lactoferrin testing, its clinical advantages, types of testing formats available, and ordering tips.

LARGE, COLORFUL BAGS sporting the lactoferrin branding were given out at the booth to hold all of the lactoferrin collateral. The large bag size allowed it to also carry show collateral from other booths, resulting in our bag becoming the most visible carryall at the show.

ASTMH2014 Tradeshow

To appeal to the international audience at ASTMH, TECHLAB featured four of our rapid QUIK CHEK™ and lateral flow test kits for infectious disease and touted our international collaborations.

TECHLAB®, Inc. partners with health research organizations to make our products avail-able for clinical and epidemiological studies of diarrheal diseases.

Bill & Melinda Gates FoundationWith a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s Center for Vaccine Development used TECHLAB diagnostics for a three-year study of diarrheal diseases among young children in developing areas of Africa and Asia. The Global Enteric Multi-Center Study (GEMS) is the most extensive study of child-hood diarrheal diseases ever conducted, with more than 22,000 subjects from seven sites. Researchers evaluated approximately 40 pathogens to determine the most com-mon causes of moderate-to-severe diarrheal disease.

National Institutes of Health (NIH)Using small business grants obtained through the National Institute of Allergy and Infec-tious Diseases (NIAID) and the Middle Atlantic Center of Excellence (MARCE), TECHLAB and its research collaborators have effectively moved medical diagnostics from concept to the international marketplace. TECHLAB has partnered over the past 15 years with Dr. William A. Petri, Jr. at the University of Virginia and Dr. Rashidul Haque at the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research in Bangladesh to secure NIH development funds for global diagnostics.

TECHLAB strives to build long-term partnerships that create successful outcomes lead-ing to better patient healthcare.

ELISA rápida: QUIK CHECK™

Flujo lateral

No Sí

How does QUIK CHEK™ rapid ELISA technology compare to lateral flow?

What is the process?

Does it require a uniform flow?

How reliable are results?

QUIK CHEK™

Contact between a porous pad and a porous mem-brane enable the efficient diffusion and formation of antigen-antibody complexes. Increased sensitivity is achieved by enzymatic detection.

No

A wash step ensuresunbound material isremoved from the testline, minimizing interfer-ence and amplifying the test result.

Lateral Flow

Antigens interact with antibodies attachedto latex or gold particles that are captured at the test line to form a colored line.

Yes

With no wash step, unbound material may not be removed from the test line, leaving the test subject to clogs that result in inconclusive or inaccurate results.

A HANDY COMPARISON CARD produced in both English and Spanish explained the differences between QUIK CHEK™ and lateral flow technologies.

A VIDEO playing continuously at the booth also explored the differences between QUIK CHEK™ and lateral flow technologies with clever animations.

NEW FRONTIERS: FECAL LACTOFERRIN TESTING & C. DIFFICILE

TECHLAB produces Diarrhea Digest twice annually. This newsletter-style publication has been a smash hit at tradeshows and highlights developments in enterics with a splash of humor.

Diarrhea Digest

THE SPRING 2015 EDITION of Diarrhea Digest, like all issues, blends the humorous with the serious. Our back page, called “Poop Culture” features funny cartoons, amusing on-line links, trivia, quizzes, and more, while the proceeding pages focus on developments in intestinal disease diagnostics.

TECHLAB partners with health research organizations to make our products available for clinical and epidemiological studies of diarrheal diseases.

With a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s Center for Vaccine Development used TECHLAB diagnostics for a three-year study of diarrheal diseases among young children in developing areas of Africa and Asia.

TECHLAB has also supplied diagnostics tests to the Global Enteric Multi-Center Study (GEMS), the most extensive study of childhood diarrheal diseases ever conducted, and to The International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research—a health research institution in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

The Global Enteric Multi-Center Study (GEMS) is the most extensive study of childhood diarrheal diseases ever conducted, with more than 22,000 subjects from seven sites. Researchers evaluated about 40 pathogens to determine the most common causes of diarrheal diseases.

Bill and Melinda GatesCo-Chairs, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation500 Fifth Avenue NorthSeattle, WA 98109

Dear Mr. and Ms. Gates:

On behalf of the owners and employees of TECHLAB, Inc., we cordially invite you to visit TECHLAB’s exhibit at the 63rd Annual Meeting of The American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene held in New Orleans between November 2-5, 2014.

TECHLAB’s theme for this year’s meeting is “Infectious Disease Diagnostics for Global Health.” In part, this celebrates productive collaborations between the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and TECHLAB over the last decade. These collaborations include the following:

• Utilization of TECHLAB’s enteric parasitology diagnostics in the Foundation’s GEMS project. Importantly, GEMS documented a previously unknown level of mortality due to cryptosporidiosis.

• Participation in the Foundation’s MAL-ED project, both with enteric parasitology diagnostics and biomarker assays that quantify intestinal inflammation in malnourished children.

• Involvement in the Foundation’s vaccine efficacy study, PROVIDE. TECHLAB partnered with Dr. William A. Petri, Jr. at the University of Virginia to develop a novel biomarker assay that describes the burden of tropical enteropathy in vaccine non-responders.

• Ongoing product development associated with the Foundation’s RIAT project that funds new diagnostic assays to describe population-level success of vaccination campaigns.

• Participation in the Foundation’s newly formed Cryptosporidium intervention initiative.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has allowed TECHLAB to employ our strengths towards improving global health; we look forward to expanding these collaborations in the near future.

We certainly understand that you have a very busy schedule. If the opportunity arises, however, we would enjoy having you and your colleagues visit our ASTMH exhibit at BOOTH #113.

Sincerely,

Joel Herbein, PhD David Lyerly, PhDSenior Research Scientist Vice President of Research and DevelopmentDirector, Veterinary Products Co-Owner540-449-4556 (mobile)[email protected]
