Brothers,

Over the past several years, Beta Alpha has experiences a multitude of rigorous internal changes in the operation and structure of the chapter. These new inter-nal changes have been recognized posi-tively by the Province Council and we have worked hard at perfecting each change. The coming season will be another year of significant change; however rather than internal changes, 2014 will be one of great external change. I am very excited to an-nounce that the Beta Alpha chapter house will undergo a massive renovation begin-ning April of 2014. There are many new developments planned, including moving the chapter room to the first floor, re-structuring the veranda area, and transi-tioning to “suite style” living arrange-ments which consist of four man rooms with a shared common area.

Despite the large changes to come, contin-ued excellence will remain a main focus of our members. This drive for success was recognized during the 2014 Province Council, which was held at the University of Memphis in Tennessee at the beginning of February. Run by the National Adminis-trative Office, this year’s council was a joint meeting between the Irwin, Forester, and Chiles provinces. The Beta Alpha chapter was awarded 6 certificates for recognition of excellence in areas ranging from finances to philanthropic work. Wil-liam E. Dreyer, the 39th Knight Command-er of the Order, honored the Chapter with our 33rd Samuel Zenas Ammen Award for Chapter Excellence, as well as our 9th George C. Marshall Award for Chapter Excellence.

With the recognition and feedback from our National Administrative Office for our operations in the past year, our current officer core has developed a plan of action and begun to work towards higher goals and achievements. The focus of the Chap-ter’s effort last year was to begin the en-hancement of our external operations through campus and inter-fraternal rela-tions, as well as a stronger emphasis on our philanthropy. Beta Alpha will be ex-panding this effort to increase external operations by incorporating alumni with more events hosted by the Chapter. One

such event being the development of our KA Charity Golf Tournament and Auction which will take place on August 1 and 2 at the Oak Meadows Country Club. The two-day event will include activities such as a Friday dinner and auction, a four-man scramble for 18 holes, and single-hole games throughout the day on Saturday. The KA Charity Golf Tournament and Auc-tion is an alumni geared event to raise money for our national philanthropy, Muscular Dystrophy Association. Cody Call, the current Corresponding Secretary, is organizing the event and will be reach-ing out to a large alumni base to attend in the coming months. He may be contacted via email at [email protected] for further details or to answer any related questions.

While we will continue to flourish on cam-pus socially with our recent expansion in social media outlets such as Instagram, Foursquare, Facebook, Twitter, and a completely redesigned website; the chap-ter will also continue to excel in our inter-nal operations and keep a more focused vision on the founding principles of the Order.

Membership accountability is currently at the core of our internal operations. Over the course of the spring 2014 semester, a high set of expectations will be set for each member as the Chapter makes the transition into the newly renovated house, which is projected to be completed by August of 2014. The high set of expecta-tions includes a responsibility to scholar-

ship, conduct, and cleanliness.

For the Fall 2013 semester, the active Chapter achieved a 3.07 GPA through dili-gent study and rigorous application. This marks the fifth straight semester that our chapter has been above a 3.0 GPA, and we will continue to work for the academic success of the Chapter in the coming se-mesters.

Last year, a Standards Board was estab-lished by our previous Parliamentarian, Brother Nicholas Foster, to assist the officer core with disciplinary issues that arise in the Chapter and to determine and distribute sanctions. Since its implementa-tion, the Chapter has seen an increase in exemplary conduct due to the increase in membership accountability. We plan to continue to develop and improve upon this model to ensure continued improve-ment in our chapter’s behaviors, attitudes, and morals.

Beta Alpha has always and continues to take immense pride in the cleanliness of the Chapter house. Time and time again, guests compliment the Chapter on the cleanliness of the house. In an effort to prepare ourselves for our coming house renovation, cleaning duties have been modified and standards have been in-creased. Every active member residing in the Chapter house participates in our rota-tion of cleaning duties, and all members are responsible for their part.

These three ruling ideas of scholarship, conduct, and cleanliness that the officer core has adopted as a top priority will en-sure the highest quality of membership, unite chapter with a sense of “oneness”, and continue our tradition of excellence as we transition into the newly renovated house this fall. Without a doubt, all of the members of the Beta Alpha Chapter have large amount of work ahead of them in 2014, but I know that we are excited to tackle the challenges ahead and set the pace for the newly renovated house.

Fraternally,

Christopher Markus

Words From the I

Page 3: Kappa Alpha Order Quotes - Spring 2014

The Beta Alpha Chapter has big plans for our national philanthropy, the Muscular Dystrophy As-sociation. After meeting with the Executive Director of MDA, Jerry Bear, we have elected to participate in 2014’s MDA Muscle Walk. Four chapters of Kappa Alpha will be there, Missouri Southern State, Mis-souri State, Drury, along with our very own Missouri S&T chapter. Last year we raised nearly $750 from the muscle walk alone. This year, with earlier prepa-ration and consequently greater hype, we hope to bump that up to at least $1,000.

Additionally, we aspire raise money through a campus-wide event. The details are still a little foggy, but some of the possible options include the following. A bowling tournament, which has been hosted before and led to large success among friends and familiars. A rib sale, which has seen past success, but has been dormant for many years. And finally, a “tie-up” event. More specifically, one where students would pay a donation to duct tape a popular member of Kappa Alpha to a wall piece by piece. We are excited for this year, and hope to be successful in all of our fundraising efforts.

Regards, Aleksandr Chernoff MDA Chairman [email protected]

Philanthropy

MDA

The Beta Alpha Chapter has continually put a high emphasis on servitude to those in need and for the betterment of our community. As a Kappa Alpha gentleman it is our duty to perform community ser-vice. Like our spiritual founder, Robert E. Lee said, “Duty is the most sublime word in our language. Do your duty in all things. You cannot do more. You should never wish to do less.” This ideal led our chapter to provide over 2000 hours of community service this past summer and fall semester, which breaks down to approximately 40 hours of service per member. Along with all of the impact our members make in-dividually, our chapter has continued to make an effort to make larger impacts in the Rolla communi-ty. We have continued with our highway cleanups, volunteered at Community Partnership (a local charity group to help families in need), and have been donating food each week to Russell House, the local women’s shelter. Yet, we have set our sights on another large impact project. From April 30 to May 2 our chapter will be co-hosting a blood at Havener with our neighbors, Beta Sigma Psi. We believe that this will be not only an excellent benefit to the community, but also a great opportunity for our members to grow. Respectfully, Colten Conroy Philanthropy Chairman [email protected]

Province Council 2014

On February 1, 2014 the officers of the Beta Alpha

chapter attended the Chiles, Irwin, and Forester

Province Council in Memphis, TN. This year was the

first time that Nationals had taken over all of the

preparations for province council, aiming to provide

officer specific training and education in an effort to

improve the operation of chapters across the nation.

With three provinces in attendance, it was quite the

program with a large attendance. Breakout session

topics ranged from how to improve recruitment, to

how to achieve better grades as a chapter, and quite

a bit of information about managing risks and oppor-

tunities. We were able to hear from several thought

provoking speakers, including Adam Ritz (Radio Per-

sonality and Risk Management Spokesperson), Dr.

Dan Bureau (Director of Student Affairs Learning and

Assessment at the University of Memphis), and Dan

Amato (Kappa Alpha Order Director of Chapter Ser-

vices).

After a long day of presentations and workshops, the

conference ended with Beta Alpha receiving several

awards. Our chapter was recognized for:

Excellence in Chapter Finances

Excellence in Educational Programming

Crimson Gift Century Society

Excellence in Campus & Community

Communications

Project Outreach—Outstanding Service

Hours per Man

Outstanding Chapter Achievement

These awards were followed by our chapter receiving yet another Samuel Zenas Ammen Award for Chapter Excellence.

Then, a great surprise came when all three George C. Marshall Awards of Chapter Excellence were awarded, not only

at the same province council but to schools all from Missouri. The other two chapters that received this distinction

were the Alpha Delta Chapter from William Jewell College, and the Alpha Eta Chapter from Westminster College. Dur-

ing the presentation of our ninth George C. Marshall Award of Chapter Excellence, our chapter was specifically recog-

nized for our implementation of standards board (our new internal judicial process), our dedication to the quality per-

formance and knowledge of our ritual, and our chapter’s continuous donations to Russell House, the local women’s

shelter. With a successful, year now behind us, we look forward to another great year with many accomplishments.

Current Chapter Officers

Brothers,

The Beta Alpha Chapter will be hosting a new Charity Golf Tournament, Dinner, and Auction on August 1st

and 2nd at Oak Meadows Country Club in Rolla, MO. The Golf Tournament is going to be a 4-man scramble on

August 2nd with tee times starting at 8:00am. The Dinner and Auction will be the evening of August 1st with a

social hour starting at 5:30pm and dinner at 6:30pm. The cost of the tournament is going to be $400 per

team. We will have different games going on throughout the day on different holes for chances to win prizes.

We are also going to be having tee box sponsors, and green sponsors. The cost to sponsor a tee box or green

is $150 or an entire hole is $250. With the sponsor of a tee box, green, or entire hole you will receive a sign

placed on the golf course. This means there will only be 36 sponsorships available. We are looking for a lot

of Alumni participation to make this a fun, profitable

event as the proceeds from the tournament will be

going to our National Philanthropy, the Muscular

Dystrophy Association (MDA).
