THE MATCH-UP Kansas City makes the trek to South Florida for a second consecutive year as the Chiefs visit the Dolphins on Sunday. The Chiefs are 5-3 and are seeking to extend their winning streak to four games under head coach Herm Edwards, who has guided Kansas City to victories in five of its last six contests. Kansas City is coming off a convincing 31-17 road win at St. Louis (11/5) after securing home victories against San Diego and Seattle. Meanwhile, Miami got a huge boost by snapping a four-game losing streak as the Dolphins handed the previously-undefeated Bears their first loss of the season, registering a decisive 31-13 victory at Chicago (11/5). Last season, the Chiefs prevailed by a 30-20 margin in an unusual Friday night contest at Miami (10/21/05). Kansas City traveled to Miami on the day of that game due to the impending arrival of Hurricane Wilma. The Chiefs will be seeking to win back-to-back road games against the Dolphins for the first time since registering victories in the club’s initial three trips to Miami in ’66-68. Both the Chiefs and the Dolphins are playing with a quarterback other than their Opening Day starter. Former Miami QB Damon Huard has posted a 5-2 record as Kansas City’s starter subbing for injured two-time Pro Bowl QB Trent Green. Huard has registered a rating of 100.0 or better in all five of the Chiefs victories and currently ranks second in the NFL with a 105.2 overall rating. In Miami, former Lions QB Joey Harrington has opened the last four games in place of QB Daunte Culpepper and threw three TDs last week against the Bears. The Chiefs are one of seven AFC squads that own a 5-3 record or better at the midseason mark and are in the thick of the AFC West race with Denver and San Diego, who both own 6-2 records. The Chiefs have averaged 32.0 points per game during their three-game winning streak thanks in large part to RB Larry Johnson who ranks second in the NFL in yards from scrimmage (143.1 ypg) and is third in rushing yards (102.0 ypg). Up next for the Chiefs is a home date vs. Oakland (11/19), while Miami hosts Minnesota (11/19). THE SERIES The Dolphins hold a slim, 13-12 overall edge in the 25 meaningful games played in the series, including a pristine postseason mark of 3-0 against the Chiefs. KC owns a 12-10 advantage in regular season play, while the two squads have gone 1-1-1 in three preseason meetings. The Chiefs have won their last two meetings with the Dolphins and are attempting to construct their first three-game winning streak against Miami since winning the first six games in this series from ’66-68. Kansas City was victorious in its last visit to South Florida, winning by a 30-20 count at Dolphin Stadium (10/21/05) in a game that was moved to a Friday night due to the impending arrival of Hurricane Wilma. That contest snapped the Chiefs six-game losing streak at Miami. KC is 6-10 all-time in games played at Miami, owning a 2-6 mark at Dolphin Stadium and a 4-4 record at the Orange Bowl. The Chiefs other victory at Dolphin Stadium came by a 26-21 count (12/3/89). The Chiefs are 6-3 against the Dolphins in Kansas City, including a 48-30 win at Arrowhead (9/29/02). Without question, the most memorable and most significant contest in this series was Miami’s 27-24 double-overtime AFC Divisional Playoff win at Kansas City (12/25/71), Miami’s first-ever victory over the Chiefs after six straight losses dating back to ’66. That Christmas Day classic remains the longest game in NFL history (82:40). It was not only the final game ever played at Kansas City’s Municipal Stadium, but also marked the Chiefs final postseason appearance of the magnificent Hank Stram era. Miami also owns victories in two other historic postseason meetings against Kansas City. The Dolphins prevailed by a 27-17 count in a ’94 AFC Wild Card duel (12/31/94) between QBs Joe Montana and Dan Marino, a game that proved to be the final NFL contest of Montana’s Hall of Fame career. Kansas City also suffered a gut-wrenching 17-16 AFC First Round loss at Miami (1/5/91), an outing that marked the first of 10 playoff contests during Marty Schottenheimer’s 10-year tenure (’89-98) as Chiefs head coach. KANSAS CITY’S FAVORITE MIAMI NATIVE NINE-TIME PRO BOWL LB DERRICK THOMAS

Many notable figures in Chiefs history own ties to South Florida, but there is no question that Kansas City’s favorite son from Miami is the late, great LB Derrick Thomas. Thomas was born in Miami on January 1, 1967. Thomas always appreciated the fact that his birthday coincided with one of the most memorable moments in Chiefs history as Kansas City claimed a 31-7 win vs. Buffalo in the ’66 AFL Championship Game to earn a berth in Super Bowl I. In 11 glorious seasons with the Chiefs (’89-99), Thomas earned nine Pro Bowl berths. Thomas tragically passed away in Miami on February 8, 2000 and is in his third year of eligibility for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. This year’s Hall of Fame selection meeting will take place in South Florida on Saturday, February 3rd prior to Super Bowl XLI at Dolphin Stadium on Sunday, February 4th.

Thomas has been a finalist in the Hall of Fame selection process the past two years. If elected this year, he would become the 10th member of the Chiefs organization to earn a place in Canton, an illustrious list that already includes three defensive stalwarts – LB Bobby Bell (HOF ’83), LB Willie Lanier (HOF ’86) and DT Buck Buchanan (HOF ’90).

Already a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s NFL All-Decade Team of the 1990s, no player registered more sacks (116.5) than Thomas from ’90-99. Thanks in large part to Thomas and the Chiefs defense, only San Francisco (113-47) and Buffalo (103-57) produced better regular season records over that 10-year span than Kansas City (102-58). During the decade of the ’90s, no team could top the +128 turnover differential and 365 takeaways produced by KC.

With Thomas on the field for the Chiefs from ’89-99, Kansas City made seven playoff appearances, won three AFC West titles and suffered only one losing season during his tenure with the franchise. He served as a leader of a Chiefs defense that led the NFL in scoring defense in both ’95 and ’97. In total, no NFL team allowed fewer offensive points from ’95-98 than Kansas City.

Renowned for his patented sack-and-strip maneuver, Thomas was clearly one of the most dominant players of his era and still holds the NFL’s single-game record with 7.0 sacks vs. Seattle (11/11/90). Thomas led the NFL with 20.0 sacks in ’90, making him just one of six players in league history to register a season with 20.0 or more sacks.

Nick Saban was named the sixth coach in Dolphins history on December 27, 2004. Saban entered the NFL after spending 11 years as a head coach in the collegiate ranks. Most recently, he took over an LSU program that had seven losing seasons in the ’90s prior to his arrival. With the Tigers, Saban compiled a 48-16 record and claimed the national championship following the 2003 season when he was named National Coach of the Year by the Associated Press. Prior to his tenure at LSU, Saban spent five seasons (’95-99) as head coach at Michigan State.

He originally entered the NFL as the secondary coach for the Houston Oilers (’88-89). After a one-year stint as the head coach at Toledo (’90), he served as defensive coordinator with Cleveland (’91-94) under head coach Bill Belichick.

Born October 31, 1951, in Fairmont, West Virginia, Saban began his coaching career at his alma mater of Kent State (’73-76), before working at Syracuse (’77), West Virginia (’78-79), Ohio State (’80-81) and Navy (’82). He then took over defensive coordinator and secondary duties at Michigan State (’83-87). Saban was a two-sport athlete at Kent State, playing defensive back on the football squad and shortstop on the baseball team.

HERM EDWARDS NFL Head Coach: 6th Year NFL Coach Overall: 17th Year NFL Overall: 45-47 (.489) Regular Season: 44-44 (.500) Postseason: 2-3 (.400) Record w/KC: 5-3 (.625) Record w/NYJ: 39-41 (.488) Overall NFL Exp: 27 years College: San Diego State (’77)

Herm Edwards was named the 10th head coach in Kansas City history on January 9, 2006. He rejoined the Chiefs after five-year stint (2001-05) as head coach of the N.Y. Jets. Edwards guided the Jets to three postseason berths, the most of any coach in that franchise’s history. Edwards originally joined the Chiefs as a recipient of the NFL’s Minority Coaching Fellowship in ’89. He later served as a scout (’90-91, ’95) and also coached defensive backs for Kansas City (’92-94).

Born in Fort Monmouth, NJ on April 24, 1954, Edwards served as Tampa Bay’s assistant head coach/DBs coach under Tony Dungy from ’96-00 before taking over as the head coaching reins of the Jets.

Edwards concluded his college career as a DB at San Diego State in ’76 and signed as a rookie free agent with Philadelphia (’77-85). In 135 career starts with the Eagles, he established a franchise record with 38 INTs, and started in Super Bowl XV. Edwards concluded his NFL playing career seeing duty in seven games for the Rams and Falcons in ’86. He then coached DBs at San Jose State (’87-89) prior to hiarrival in the NFL ranks with Kansas City in ’90.

Chiefs Eight-Game Report – LJ’s Torrid Pace Continues Chiefs RB Larry Johnson is currently on pace to finish the year with a

franchise-record 2,290 yards from scrimmage, which would break the previous mark of 2,287 established by RB Priest Holmes in 2002. Johnson is also on track to carry the ball a team-record 398 times in 2006.

P Dustin Colquitt owns a 46.8-yard gross punting average and a 40.8-yard net after eight games, marks that are both on pace to break the current standards established by the late P Jerrel Wilson, who was enshrined in the Chiefs Hall of Fame in ’88.

Seven-time Pro Bowl TE Tony Gonzalez currently has 504 receiving yards and is on pace to register his third 1,000-yard campaign. QB Damon Huard has already established single-season career highs for completions (131), yards (1,623) and TDs (11). Huard currently owns a 105.2 rating to rank second in the NFL. Only one player in Chiefs history has finished a season with a triple-digit rating, QB Len Dawson (101.9 in ’66). KC INDIVIDUALS ON PACE FOR TEAM SINGLE-SEASON RECORDS

A Solid First Half is Imperitive Against Miami Kansas City has scored first in four of the club’s five wins this season.

The Chiefs will square off against a Miami defense that has allowed just 12 first-quarter points this season. Only three teams – Carolina (9), Denver (9) and Baltimore (10) – have allowed fewer first-quarter points this season. The Dolphins have not permitted an opponent to score a TD on its opening offensive possession this year. Last week, Miami limited Chicago’s offense to a field goal in the game’s opening quarter. The Bears currently lead the NFL in first-quarter scoring with 60 points.

The Chiefs defense has pitched a first-quarter shutout in five games this season and will face a Miami offense that has scored just 10 points in the first quarter all season. In fact, the Dolphins have been held scoreless in the first quarter of six games this year. Only Tampa Bay (3) has scored fewer points in first 15 minutes of games in 2006. Miami is the only team that has yet to score on its opening drive of a game this season.

Kansas City has led at halftime in four of its five wins this season. Dating back to ’95, the Chiefs own a 23-7 (.767) record on the road when leading at halftime. Miami has led at halftime twice this season, accomplishing that feat in each of its last two contests. Miami is 2-11 (.154) when trailing at halftime under Nick Saban, including an 0-5 mark in 2006.

Chiefs Must Pressure the Passer The Chiefs have been successful this season when securing a lead

and forcing their opponents to throw. Kansas City has registered 15.0 sacks in its five victories, but owns just 2.0 sacks in its three losses. Only Oakland (35.0) and Cleveland (29.0) have been sacked more than Miami (26.0) this season. The Dolphins were sacked just 26.0 times all season in 2005, the fourth-lowest tally in the league. Miami passers have already thrown 12 INTs this season after being picked off just 16 times a year ago.

Stats to Consider on the Dolphins at Home Miami is 6-5 at home under head coach Nick Saban, but has

registered wins in four of its last six contests at Dolphin Stadium. Miami’s lone home victory this season was a 13-10 win vs. Tennessee (9/24). In those 11 home games under Saban, the Dolphins have outscored their opponents by a mere five points, owning a 222-to-217 scoring edge, good for an average score of 20.2 to 19.7. The Chiefs have scored an average of 16.8 ppg in four road contests this season.

LJ’s Staggering Stats After 20 Starts The Chiefs are 14-4 (.778) when RB Larry Johnson posts a 100-yard

game. Miami is 2-11 (.154) when permitting a 100-yard rusher dating back to 2004, including a streak of five consecutive losses. Kansas City also boasts a 10-2 (.833) mark in games when Johnson scores two or more rushing TDs. Last week at St. Louis (11/5), Johnson made just his 20th NFL start. No player since the AFL-NFL merger has produced more rushing TDs (30) or total TDs (34) in his first 20 starts than Johnson. In 40 career games in a Chiefs uniform, Johnson has produced a total of 39 rushing TDs, a mark that is already tied for fourth in team history. The Dolphins are 20-4 (.833) when producing a 100-yard back dating back to 2002. Miami RB Ronnie Brown has averaged 114.3 rushing ypg the past three weeks and registered a career-high 157 yards at Chicago (11/5).

Chiefs Eight-Game Report – Offensive Report After eight games, the Chiefs own a composite passer rating of 96.8

which is on pace to break the team record of 96.3 set in ’68. Kansas City has completed 64.44% of its passes in 2006, which puts the club on pace for the second-best mark in team history. The current record of 65.95% was set in 2004. The Chiefs have thrown just four INTs after eight games in 2006. The single-season team record five INTs was established in ’90.

Chiefs-Dolphins Scoring Stats The Chiefs have averaged 39.0 ppg in their last two meetings with

Miami, including last year’s 30-20 victory (10/21/05). Kansas City has averaged 32.0 ppg in its five victories in 2006. Dating back to ’99 Miami has lost 13 consecutive games when allowing 30 points or more. Miami’s last win when giving up 30+ points was a 31-30 victory at New England (10/17/99). The Dolphins are 22-4 (.846) at home dating back to 2001 when scoring 21 points or more. The Chiefs have allowed an average of 18.4 ppg in their five wins this season. Excluding opponent return scores, KC’s defense has permitted an average of just 17.0 offensive ppg in those five victories. The Dolphins have been held to 17 points or less in five of their six losses this season.

KC Seeks to Pound the Ball, Grind the Clock The Chiefs ran the ball 45 times for 185 yards with three TDs in last

year’s 30-20 win at Miami (10/21/05) as KC held a decided 41:40-to-18:20 time of possession edge in that contest. Head coach Herm Edwards would love an encore performance this week against Miami. In the Chiefs five victories, Kansas City has held the ball an average of 32:16. KC currently ranks fifth in the league, averaging 31.5 rushing attempts per game.

Winning the Turnover Battle is a Must Against Miami The Chiefs boasted a +1 turnover mark in last year’s win against the

Dolphins and would like to once again beat Miami in the turnover column. The Chiefs have won seven consecutive games with a positive turnover differential dating back to 2005. Kansas City is + 7 (13 takes/6 gives) in its five wins this season, while the Dolphins are +6 (9 takes/3 gives) in their two victories in 2006.

The Dolphins registered six takeaways that led to 21 points in last week’s 31-13 win at Chicago (11/5). Miami has posted a 33-2 (.943) record at home with a positive turnover margin dating back to ’97. The Dolphins have gone just 2-26 (.071) with a negative turnover margin dating back to 2003, including a streak of 21 straight losses. Only Tennessee (2) has lost fewer fumbles than Miami (3) this season, while only Pittsburgh (14) and Tennessee (13) have thrown more INTs than Miami (12).

Passing Stats, Other Chiefs-Dolphins Nuggets Dating back to the 2000 campaign, only Chicago (2), Atlanta (5) and

Baltimore (5) have boasted fewer games with a 300-yard passer than Miami (6). Dolphins QB Joey Harrington owns an 0-4 record as an NFL starter when he throws for 300+ yards … Kansas City is 5-0 this season when QB Damon Huard posts a 100.0-rating game. The Dolphins have posted a 3-10 (.231) record when allowing an opposing QB to post a 100.0 rating dating back to 2003. Huard owns a 3-0 record as a starter at Dolphin Stadium … Miami’s offense has been faced with an average distance of 8.42 yards to go on second down. Only Oakland (8.73) has been forced to go a longer average distance on second down … Miami’s defense has allowed just 19 plays of 20+ yards, tying with Indianapolis for the lowest total in the league … The Chiefs have scored at least one rushing TD in 29 of their last 30 victories.

Thanks to three first-half turnovers by the Rams and a season-high 172 rushing yards out of RB Larry Johnson, the Chiefs escaped St. Louis with a 31-17 win in the Governor’s Cup series. Kansas City capitalized on three St. Louis fumbles, jumping out to a 17-0 lead on their I-70 rivals.

Chiefs RB Dee Brown pounced on the first fumble after WR Dane Looker muffed a Dustin Colquitt punt at the Rams 14-yard line. That set up a Johnson one-yard TD run for a 7-0 lead.

On the next possession, Chiefs DE Jared Allen sacked and stripped St. Louis QB Marc Bulger at the Rams 46-yard line. Rookie DT Stephen Williams recovered the fumble and watched his offense go for a knockout blow on the very next play. QB Damon Huard tossed a perfect 43-yard pass to WR Samie Parker down to the three-yard line. Huard then found TE Tony Gonzalez wide open in the end zone for a TD and a 14-0 lead.

LB Keyaron Fox forced the third St. Louis fumble on the next series when he poked the ball free from RB Steven Jackson. Allen recovered the ball for Kansas City at the St. Louis 33-yard line, giving the Chiefs another short field and a 42-yard Lawrence Tynes field goal to open the game with 17 unanswered points.

Staring down a 17-0 deficit and searching for answers, the Rams switched to a no-huddle offense to shake things up. The change in gameplan seemed to ignite them as Bulger fired back-to-back big gains to WR Isaac Bruce to move inside the Red Zone. From there Jackson bulled across the goal line from two yards out to cut the Chiefs lead to 17-7 in the second quarter.

Unfazed, the Chiefs would answer with a crisp, eight-play, 80-yard scoring march. Huard completed three passes on the drive including his second TD pass to Gonzalez, this time from 25 yards out. On the play, Huard side-stepped a blitzing CB Travis Fisher and found his Pro Bowl tight end down the seam to take a 24-7 lead with 0:48 left in the half. The Rams would sneak in a 41-yard field goal from Jeff Wilkins as time expired in the half to make the score 24-10 at the break.

St. Louis would edge closer with a methodical 12-play, 80-yard third-quarter drive. The Rams converted a fourth-and-one play and scored on a Bulger to WR Kevin Curtis pass on third-and-goal from the two-yard line. Bulger – who completed five of six passes on the drive – and the Rams were now within one score at 24-17 with 3:50 left in the third quarter.

Kansas City’s offense struggled to find its footing in the second half as it mustered just one first down in the third quarter. Then early in the fourth quarter the Chiefs got rolling from their own six-yard line. Johnson ripped off runs of 15 and 16 yards, then Huard hooked up with Gonzalez on a big third-down conversion to keep the drive alive. On the very next play, Huard took a hit, but still managed to hit TE Kris Wilson with an 11-yard TD pass to take a 31-17 lead with 6:20 left in the game.

St. Louis drove into the Chiefs Red Zone, however their comeback bid came up short when Bulger’s third and fourth-down passes from inside the five-yard line were batted down. First, S Sammy Knight knocked down the third down attempt, then S Bernard Pollard iced the Chiefs 31-17 victory on fourth down.

GAME NOTES• TE Tony Gonzalez caught two touchdown passes, bypassing WR Otis Taylor (57) for the most TD catches in Chiefs history.• RB Larry Johnson made his 20th career NFL start. His 30 rushing TDs and 34 total TDs in his first 20 starts are the most by any player since the NFL-NFL merger.

In an unusual scheduling quirk due to the impending arrival of Hurricane Wilma, Kansas City played under the Friday night lights in the regular season for the first time since ’64. Despite flying to Miami on the day of the game instead of observing their normal schedule for a Sunday game, the Chiefs beat the Dolphins by a 30-20 count at Dolphins Stadium. Kansas City jumped out to an early 7-0 lead when a 50-yard pass to WR Chris Horn set up a score on the opening drive. Holmes ran around the left end and followed the blocks of T Willie Roaf and WR Eddie Kennison for a five-yard TD. The Chiefs defense pitched a first-quarter shutout and only relinquished two Miami field goals in the first half. Kansas City would add a two-yard RB Larry Johnson touchdown run to give KC a 14-6 lead at intermission. After a first half that only featured 20 points between the two teams, it only took 1:01 for both teams to score a touchdown in the second half. First, it was Miami RB Ronnie Brown breaking off a 65-yard run down the left sideline for a touchdown to cut the Chiefs lead 14-13 only 20 seconds into the third quarter. Kansas City took a mere 41 seconds to respond with a touchdown of its own when RB Priest Holmes scored on a 35-yard touchdown run, his second of the game. K Lawrence Tynes would add field goals of 30, 51 and a career-long 52 yards to increase the Chiefs lead to 30-13 midway through the fourth quarter. Tynes joined K Nick Lowery as just the only other player in team history to register a pair of 50-yard FGs in the same game. QB Sage Rosenfels relieved Miami starter Gus Frerotte in the fourth quarter and promptly completed a 77-yard TD pass to WR Chris Chambers. It cut the lead to 30-20 in favor of the Chiefs. Kansas City recovered Miami’s ensuing onside kick and salted away the victory. The Chiefs two-headed rushing attack was at its finest in this contest. Holmes carried the ball 18 times for 90 yards (5.0 avg.) with two touchdowns, while Johnson added 23 rushes for 93 yards (4.0 avg.) with a score of his own. TE Tony Gonzalez recorded a season-high seven receptions for 67 yards (9.6 avg.) on the evening and QB Trent Green completed 20 of 34 passes for 289 yards for an 86.5 rating. Kansas City held the ball for 41:40 compared to just 18:20 for Miami. The Kansas City defense also proved its mettle, recording an INT and allowing Frerotte just 125 yards on 11-of-29 passing, good for a mere 37.3 rating.

GAME NOTES• Kansas City’s win at Miami marked was the franchise’s first regular season victory on a Friday night since the Dallas Texans registered a 27-7 win at Boston (10/12/62).• The Chiefs defense forced eight punts, the club’s highest tally since forcing eight punts in a 49-0 win vs. Arizona (12/1/02).• RB Priest Holmes (1,261) bypassed RB Christian Okoye (1,246) for the most rushing attempts in KC history.• QB Trent Green (17,452) moved ahead of QB Bill Kenney (17,277) into second on the Chiefs career passing yardage chart.
